This was one of the finest teams in girls Basketball history here at Berrien Springs. After losing four starters to graduation from last year’s 24-1 squad, this group of girls had their work cut out for them, and work hard they did. They finished 20-4 and captured their third consecutive district basketball championship. They went on to upset Casso-polis in regional play, a team that had twice defeated them in the regular season. The season ended with a four point loss in the regional championship game to Battle Creek Pennfield, the eventual class “C” state champion. One of the other highlights of the season was the big upset win over powerful Benton Harbor, 45-39. There were individual highlights, also. Seniors Cathy Boreham and Sheila Duffel and junior Rhonda Thran were named to the Lakeland Conference squad. Seniors defensive specialist, Keri Bowser, received honorable mention. Rhonda Thran was also named the teams most valuable player. Vicki Backus and Ricki Vorrath were named most improved, Keri Bowser best defensive player, and Cathy Boreham was elected captain. Cathy Boreham set a new career assist mark with 131. Rhonda Thran established the following new records: Point average per game 14.5, total steals 113, field goals made 154, career steals 155. Coach Carolyn Crawford was honored by the Herald Palladium for her 150th career win during the season and a total of 161-35 at the year’s end. 99 J.V. The girls maintained the tradition of hard work and excellence established by the various girls’ teams prcceeding them. The basketball team was undefeated in league play in the first year of the Lakeland Conference. I was pleased with our success and effort,” stated Coach Stew Schofield. The cheerleaders were required to attend practice twice a week, cheer at all the games, plan pep assemblies, attend clinics and competitions, and work at concession stands. They also had to promote spirit within the teams and the student body. Solid pitching was Berrien’s First strength as Cindy DeFay compiled a 14-3 record and Julie Parmer was 7-1. Lisa Granlund also began to develop into a good pitcher. Good defense made the pitching even better. Cathy Boreham and Jan Dowell anchored the infield. Rhonda Thran moved into the shortstop slot vacated by All Stater Rachel Roots and performed admirably. Sheila Duffel and Ricki Vorrath made the outfield a hard place to get a hit. Offensively, Jan Dowell had the great knack of being on base for the booming bats of Cathy Boreham, Sheila Duffel, Rhonda Thran, and Ricki Vorrath. Terry Leigh, Karin Maysick, Tina Cole, Cindy Hickey This year the yearbook class has been a hectic one, to say the least! The week before each deadline was chaos. Ad’s came up missing, pictures were taken and developed two days previous to the due date, only rough drafts were done instead of completed final drafts, and much of the cropping needed to be redone! Well, no one claimed that the class was organized. In addition to our busy schedule, assignments had to be met for the every-so-often-published “Rock Talk”. Many times the paper was cancelled to allow more time to work on the yearbook. Despite all these problems, the 1980-81 yearbook class is proud of its yearbook. Everyone came through with extra help (even by coming during spring break) and we all learned alot. (To be responsible?) To next year’s Yearbook News Class—GOOD LUCK! 142 The co-editors, Paul and Karin “Who socialized today?” 143 Looking through the mug shots.
