When practice sessions began in late August the coaching staff and players alike believed that an undefeated season and a Red Arrow Conference Championship were possible. The dreams of an undefeated season were shattered in the opening game against Cassopolis. But we bounced back the next week to defeat Watervliet 6-0 in overtime. That win over Watervliet convinced me that we were a fine football team. During the next four conference games our offense allowed only 12 points. We then defeated LMC for the first time ever and came from behind to beat a previously undefeated Hanford team for the Red Arrow Crown. Hopefully, this will mark the beginning of a new era in football in Berrien Springs where the success of future Shamrock teams will be compared to that great team of ’76.” Coach Bartz Opposite page, MIDDLE: Returning varsity lettermen. The team had but one senior and one other letterman returning. They rebuilt quickly, determined to win, and fashioned a fine 18-4 record. They won the Red Arrow Conference title for the fourth consecutive year with a 11 - 1 mark. They also pulled a major district tournament upset, by demolishing favorite Buchanan 47 - 29 before losing the championship to a tall, senior dominated Edwardsburg squad. By a vote of their teammates Cathy Doepker and Denise Schug were voted most valuable and Cathy also most improved. Cathy and Diana Umfress were both named to the all-conference team while Anne Prillwitz and Denise were honorable mention. Coach Crawford UPPER LEFT: Nice louch, Denise. Cross Country 40 This years season was a rather pleasant surprise, especially with our hard earned 3rd place league finish. With the return of only 3 ’’caliber runners this season has to be classified as a rebuilding year. These young men worked hard and overcame the loss of 9 or 10 key people through quitting and injuries. The key to our season was the determination and dedication of these fine young men. Our team captain, Kevin Carmichael, Nick Fulbright and Brean Mohrhardt were by far the team standouts who led us to our victories. These three young men also were a part of the all conference team with 3rd, 12th and 7th place finishes respectively. Kevin also made the all regional team with a 6th place finish and qualified for the state finals. He finished the season with a 37th place finals finish. All in all this season must be considered a success. My Congratulations to this team. Coach Hempel Clockwise from boiiom left: This mustache always gets in my way. You look tired, Scott. After three consecutive winning seasons, this year's junior varsity team faced a vast rebuilding job. The Junior Rocks only had two starters returning from the previous year’s 6-1-1 team, so most of the positions had to be filled with inexperienced sophomores and freshmen. But even considering their inexperience, the Junior Varsity played with much credibility and with a few breaks, could have finished with a much better record. Offensively, the Junior Varsity was led by fullback Roger Clayton, who was the leading scorer and rusher for the season. Defensively, the Junior Varsity was led by linebackers Wesley Merrill and Randy Shelton. With fifteen freshmen returning next year, the Junior Rocks are looking forward to a much improved record next season. Four undefeated years with 63 consecutive victories. That fantastic achievement describes the girls junior varsity basketball squad. This year they were 19 -0. They continued winning even though their two leading scorers were moved up to the varsity late in the season, one being just a freshman. Playing just six minute quarters, this scrappy bunch piled up many scores in the 50’s while holding their opponents to under 20 points per contest. ANOTHER FINE SEASON COACH STOVER. The Varsity Basketball team finished the 1976-77 season with an overall record of 10-11, with a 8-6 conference record. Although this team did not live up to the expectations of some people, six of the losses were to state ranked teams. Standouts on this year’s team were Terry Hosbein who finished as the team and leagues leading scorer, was an all-conference selection, and was the 4th leading scorer in Southwestern Michigan. Jack Lewis was the team’s leading rebounder. Working with a good nucleus of returning lettermen, the Rocks are looking forward to an improved record. 49 J V Basketball FRONT ROW, L-R: Rob Steimle, Ray DePriest, Greg Dillcy, Dan Dowell, Don Wilson. The Junior Varsity Shamrock finished the 1976-77 season with an overall record of 9 wins and 10 losses and finished in third place in the Red Arrow Conference with a record of 8 wins and 6 losses. The highlights of the season for the Junior Rocks were a five game winning streak near the end of the campaign which included a 100 point effort against Galien, several overtime victories, and a 70 point performance by the frontline against Watervliet. Though all team members contributed significantly to an overall effort, the team was led in scoring by Brad Layman and Joe Hager and in rebounding by Layman and John Jasper. Team members spent this season working hard preparing for future varsity competition. Coach Paulsen 50 Freshman Basketball FRONT ROW, L-R: Ron Vorraih. The freshman basketball team captured the 1976-77 Red Arrow Championship with a 12-1 record. Their overall record was 13-5. Some outstanding characteristics of this team, which have led to their success, are personal pride, determination, and self-confidence in their own ability and potential. Their unwritten motto might be summed up in these words, ” We’re genin' better so we’re gonna work harder, because we like being on top.” Coach Pluss 51 52 54 Varsity Volleyball The 1977 Shamrock Girls Varsity Volleyball Team had an outstanding season ending with an 11-2 conference record and a 12-3 overall mark. Their record is even more impressive when considering there was only one senior, six juniors and five sophomores. The only senior and team captain, Pam Burge, was the team’s Most Improved player. The Most Valuable Players were Cathy Doepker and Denise Schug. Leading scorer was Carolyn Wetzel. All-Conference players were; Cathy Doepker, Pam Burge, Denise Schug, and Anne Prillwitz. Factors which brought about the successful season were dedication and disciplined talent. The future looks bright for varsity volleyball at Berrien Springs with such a talented group of athletes to replace graduating seniors. 56 Cheerleaders Top: VARSITY CHEERLEADERS from L-R: Laura Ragen, Darla Bilton, Laurie Schoen, Cathy Doepker, Karen Kolm. But through hard work, dedication, and self-sacrifice this year’s team compiled a very impressive record. 9-1 in dual meets, 7-0 in conference meets, Blossomland, conference and Regional champs and also setting 9 school records.
