!3n cA smoztj Of zNozm OJazii± One of Mr. Harris' most well-known sayings was a quote of Vince Lombardie: Pain makes cowards of us all. This quote was something Mr. Harris lived by constantly. In fact, he died while he was living up to this quote. Mr Harris wasn't a great, immortal figure He did many things that we disagreed with and argued against But his honesty and integrity were things we always had to strive to equal. At many times, it was painful while trying to strive for those things which makes men out of boys Yet, during those painful moments of practice or during a meet, we were never alone. Coach Harris was always there, encouraging, daring, and helping us to be courageous and strive for improvement. Mr Harris was compassionate and cared for the young men he coached. He never wanted a runner to get down and stop trying. If one of his runners was losing and Mr. Harris knew he was trying, he'd compliment his athlete on his effort. Mr. Harris once took the entire team aside after a meet last year and reproached them because they didn't win well. He cared so much about our efforts that he nearly forgot about the results of that meet Although I think that Mr. Harris would want to be remembered by all the victories won by his track team last year, I think that what those victories symbolized was more important to him; hard work, self-sacrifice, dedication, and pride in what each individual had accomplished While we mourn at Mr Harris' passing, we should try to remember what he stood for and what he tried to give each one of us. Those of us who had the good fortune to know Mr Harris have the good fortune of having something better added to our lives. By Paul Flower
