COMMENCEMENT . . . With commencement, we experience an end of an era that for some, was a heaven, for some, a hell, and for most, a place somewhere in between. Throughout our four years of high school life, we have, together, as a class, struggled along, crossing each bridge as we reached it. Now, together, we have reached the end. Yet, with commencement, we experience a beginning. The beginning of a world of our own. No longer will we be a part of a class; a group whose members protect one another as a swarm of bees protects its queen. Each student must now strive on his own accord to attain his individual success. So, as we say farewell at this end, let us go back and briefly review the final year of our high school career, as it actually happened. And, as we set out upon the path to the beginning, let us say good-bye to our school building, and hello to the unknown, ominous world around us. Be ever mindful that this earth offers a place for every individual. Reach out — grasp for — attain YOUR place. Attain your place No one can live any life but his own. To live your life, you must know yourself and be yourself. You must be an individual. You ask: Who is an individual? I am an individual. A single being. An entity struggling for identity. Out of hundreds of faces and numbers, midst hallways, rooms bulging with human beings, and in solitude. I exist. I am an individual. I am. BE . . . Without a doubt the Pom-Pom Girls are really “what’s happening.” Making up this boss movement are mind-moving Marilyn, jet-setting Jeanne, swinging Sue, prima-dona Pam, delectible Dottie, cool Cathy, daring Debby, and kinetic Karen. VIC KING MISS GRABER J Our lifetimes hold promise of black humor and bitter excitement. The student in today’s society is bombarded daily with news of insoluble issues and impending doom. But the hypocrises and dilemmas we face transcend those of politics, ecology, religion, or racial strife — areas which seem depressingly impersonal in that all of us “doing our part seems to be of little avail. The conditions of our politics, ecology, religion, and racial equality are all subject to and symptomatic of the mental health of our CULTURE; and culture is make up of INDIVIDUALS, not of parties or sects or ethnic groups. Therefore, it seems to me that our quality as individuals is vitally important to the immediate future of this species. Perhaps we must concentrate more on individual ethics and open-mindedness and honesty rather than on our role in any movement. We as youth are clamoring for more social responsibility and to shoulder it effectively we must have our own self-respect. As the world widens and departmentalizes we must limit ourselves to working for the good of our own narrow community. Since we’re concentrating on our own microcosm, things are getting, in effect, more personal and INDIVIDUAL. It’s coming down to me. Brother, and it’s coming down to you. That’s why we’re both important. For the promise of the seventies and beyond . .. our best wishes and our best efforts.
