Text from Pages 1 - 168 of the 1968 volume:

It only seems natural that we dedicate this year’s CANOE to the individual who has been so much a part of our lives here at Berrien Springs High School; who has been an organizer, friend, and first-rate teacher; not only of facts, but of methods. As an athletic promoter he has been Varsity baseball coach, Junior Varsity basketball coach, and Junior Varsity football coach. He taught boys’ physical education for two years. We cannot begin to thank him for the number of drowsy pep assemblies he has unfailingly transformed into unified, one-for-all efforts which have more than once spurred our Shamrocks on to victory. It has been the good fortune of the Class of 1968 to have Mr. Phillips as their sponsor. The seniors can remember more careful and frantic days when his influence and guiding hand was profoundly appreciated. As an instructor of the social studies, he is demanding, provocative, snarling, and surprising; he has created laughter, promoted self-evaluation, altered outlooks, opinions, and perhaps even lives. He is a teacher in the fullest sense of the word, and for this we are supremely grateful. Won’t you join us, please, in dedicating the 1968 edition of the CANOE to Mr. Thomas Phillips. IN DEDICATION. . . 3 SCHOLARSHIP BANQUET GIVES RECOGNITION Shown above are the semester honor roll students of all four high school classes with their parents appearing in the background. Dr. Jay H. Mona week, recently retired assistant director of the reactor engineering division of the Argonne National Laboratory, Chicago, spoke to the students. Dr. Monaweck emphasized that students about to enter a university will find it to be a place to think. He urged the future college students that their greatest success hinges on development of imagination and logic. The Honors Banquet is the culminating point of our four years of high school scholastic achievement. Students who have worked hard to keep up their grade averages are given formal recognition of their fine accomplishments. John Hoopingarner, Diane LaVanwav, and Pat Schmidt are lighting the candles representing character, leadership, and service while Tom Evans waits to light the candle of scholarship. All the new members received lighted candles to signify their formal admittance to the National Honor Society. John Hoopingarner and Diane La-Vanwav help Diane Zandarski into her honor gown. The new National Honor Society members chosen from the Junior class were Diane Zandarski, Kathy Simon, Dorothy Augustine, Anne Bennett, Jan Morlock, Bruce Prillwitz, Sue Bilton, Marilyn Zech, and Mary Clark. The Senior class inductees were Mark Jasper, Sue Dougan, Judy Pagel, Donna Brunke, Marian Porter, Pam Leatz, Joyce Evans, Doug Brown, Randall Nelson, and Dennis Shaft. Mathias Bayer, a German exchange student, and Dr. Monaweck, a Berrien Springs High School graduate of 1919 and the major speaker of the program, both received honorary membership to the organization. The inductees to the society were chosen on their past performance at Berrien Springs High School. All members have shown strong superiority in character, leadership, service, and scholarship. TO STUDENTS FOR ACADEMIC SUPERIORITY Rounding out the top ten scholastic Senior class members in order of their grade standing: Donna Brunke, Roy Kolberg, Judy Pagel, Mark Jasper, Dennis Shaft, Sue Dougan, Douglas Brown and Diane LaVanway, tied; Tom Evans, Deanna Shaff, and John Hoopingarner. Donna Brunke, Valedictorian, had a grade average of 3.906 just short of all “A’s”. Donna was in the band, German Club, Pep Club, and National Honor Society. Roy Kolberg, Salutatorian, held a 3.875 grade average. Roy was the President of the National Honor Society and German Club, was an exchange student to Germany, and a member of the Student Council. Players on the baseball team last year were irom left to right, standing: Coach Eric Harrington, Steve Stemm, Mike Tinker, John Larsen, Jim Maier, John Jessup, and Robin Layman; kneeling: Rick Koebel, Allen Shembarger, Tom Flagel.Doug Green, Nick Stemm, and Rich Appelget; and sitting: Doug Flagel, Jim Partington, Craig Metz, Greg White, and Bob Appelget. OUR BASEBALL TEAM HAS SUCCESSFUL YEAR Mr. Harrington was outstanding last year and coached his team to an excellent standing in the conference placings. Although the 1967 team started out with little experience, they worked hard and played long to build themselves into a fine club. First baseman Jim Maier held down this position and Doug Green, pitcher, helped tremendously throughout played regularly. the year. Tom Flagel played an excellent second base and was the team’s leading hitter. ATHLETIC RECORD HOLDERS Jack Wetzel 120 High Hurdles 15.2 seconds Jesse Ruiz 440 Yard Dash 52.4 seconds Pep prepares to put. Greg clears the high jump with inches to spare . . . HIGHLIGHT THE 1967 TRACK TEAM Starting with the back row, left to right: Coach Jim Bowser, Denny Stacey, Jack Colvin, Dave Ammerman, Mike Moody, Larrv Schmidt, Greg Stover, Rex Slocum, John Hampel, Doug Stover Bob Stover, and Denny Rusch. Middle row, left to right: Ted Hogue, Tom Shearer, Pep Colvin, John Russell, Doug Stone, Scott Pylman, Les Guthrie, Jimmy Ruiz, Pat Liston, Dowen Moody, Larry Manry, Phil Withers, M Hathcoat, and Jesse Ruiz. Kneeling, left to right: Mike Jacob, Jerry Mitchell, Mike Phillips, Mark Stone, Mike Manrv, Jack Wetzel, Dale Hogue, Brian Stark, Jim Ben-nink, Paul Pantaleo, Jim Carrington, John Cooke, and Erich Norris. THE GOLF TEAM SWINGS INTO ACTION The golf team of 1967 practiced long and hard last year. Mr. Taiclet, the team’s sponsor and instructor, guided our boys to a proud standing in the Blossomland Conference. The team members are shown in the above picture from left to right: standing are Mr. Taiclet, Greg Green, Scott Boehm, Greg Pennington, and Paul Sprung; kneeling are Mark Calay, Don Lange, Danny Lord, and Ron Rudlaff. Greg Pennington is at the peak of his powerful driving swing. Long drives play an important role in the game of golf. Constant practice is the major ingredient in yielding a constant long distant drive. Greg Green is lining himself up to the ball and is preparing to swing his club. Technique of grip, stance, swing, and putting all play an important part in the making of a fine golfer. 10 Shown arriving at the Holiday Inn are above Bruce Prillwitzand Kathv Simon and below Brenda Archer, Carolyn Hance and their dates. Under Mr. Phillips' watchful eve, Junior Class President Dennis Stacey officially dedicates the 1967 Prom to the Seniors. THE JUNIORS PRESENT . . . Mark Boehm, Sheila Franks, Carol Coover, and Mike Tinker were the Sophomore hosts and hostesses. 11 The Juniors carried out a wishing well theme throughout the prom in the decorations, centerpieces, nut-cups and favors. Shown at the wishing well are Ed Wiltfong, Shirley Rydwelski, Carol Bledsoe and her escort. Below, Betty Lausch, Dale Hogue, Carl Johnson and Linda Sommers seem to be enjoying themselves as Marian Porter and Rex Slocum find entertainment in the program. IS A WISH YOUR HEART MAKES Pat Wilson, Diane Hansen, and Roxie Airgood, members of the Freshman class, were among the girls that handed out red roses to the graduating Seniors. A red rose was the class flower for 1967. THE FOUNDATION OF LIFE IS BUILT WITH THE BRICKS OF CHARACTER Rov Kolberg, Salutatorian, aided in the ceremonies with the salutatorian s address. Below, Donna Brunke presents the traditional valedictorian's address. On the stage with her are school board president LadStacev, principal Lester Diekema, and Reverend Mr. Martin Wuggazer. On the left is Diane LaVanwav who was asked by the Senior class to deliver the main address at the graduation ceremonies. Dennis Shaff, Art Quint, and Randy Nelson all breathe a sigh of relief after the graduation ceremonies. After four years of high school the joy of graduating is too great to suppress. The long awaited moment •of walking” from Berrien Springs High School no ’onger as a student, but as an adult, is difficult to 'orehend. While Principal Lester Diekema called out the names of the graduating class members, President of the School Board, Lad Stacey, handed the diplomas to the new graduates. ■■■390 SCHOOL BOARD FACES PROBLEMS OF AN EVER-EXPANDING DISTRICT The Board of Education members are from left to right as follows: Mr. Edward Stone, Trustee; Mrs. Irene Norris, Trustee; Dr. Weldon Cooke, Trustee; Mr. Peter Rudell, President; Mr. George Bennett, Vice-President; Mr. Ray Hass, Treasurer; and Dr. Delos Drucker, Secretary. Mr. Edward Stone and President Peter Rudell are examining our present and possible future building facilities. Our ever-expanding system presents many problems of space. The 1967 -68 Berrien Springs School Board has continued to administer our school in a smooth and efficient manner. Their monthly meetings have been ones of constant re-evaluation and diligent study for the betterment of our system. The problems of an ever-growing school district are sometimes complex or intricate. Our Board has continued to handle these in a wise manner. BERRIEN SPRINGS SCHOOL DISTRICT The above photograph pictures the Board of Education in session. ounuuL Mr. Ray Hass and Superintendent of Schools, Lee F. Auble, look over the meeting’s agenda. Mrs. Irene Norris and Mr. George Bennett, as all members of the Board of Education, constantly must evaluate the busing service of our school system and its routes. 19 Concern with the budget utilizes the time of both Dr. Drucker and Dr. Cooke. THE ADMINISTRATORS . . . Our policy-makers, yes indeed! These are the men and women who take the wrinkles out of our time schedules, listen to our complaints, and straighten out the budget. These are the responsible people who must make sure our halls shine for the advent of the North Central Accreditation team, so that we may better ourselves as an institution of learning. They must track down the lost combination locks, lost staplers, and, occasionally, lost students. But, like it or not, discipline is a necessary factor in the process of maturing. This is one swinging group, in its own way, and whatever rules they enforce, they do it for a better product; namely, a better you. At the left of this page is our conscientious principal, Mr.L.Die-kema, M.A., and his long-suffering yet ever-patient secretary, Mrs. Moon. At the top on the opposite page are Mr. G.P. Bailey, Ed. COACHING STAFF CONSTANTLY Varsity football was coached this year at Berrien Springs High School by Mr.'Jim Bowser. Mr. Bowser was also responsible for varsitv track and the newly installed wrestling team. Cross-country this fall was under the direction of Mr. Harold Poling. The team showed promise and had many award winners. STRIVES FOR VICTORIES At the far left is Mr. Conrad Stover, freshman basketball coach. STUDENTS Here they are! The Class of ’71, and they’re not so green as tradition would suggest. Already they have impressed Berrien Springs High with their fresh outlook and originality. They made a fine showing in the Homecoming Float Contest, proudly carrying a-way a first place prize. The freshman class has excelled athletically as well, with a winning season in football and a bright future ahead in their basketball endeavors. We hope that if we were to look up this class at the end of another four years, they could show us a maintained ambition and an increased scope of interest. This past year, a new sport was introduced at Berrien Springs. Although our coach has never had any past experience in this sport, he succeeded in getting over 23 boys to come out and managed to mold them into a fine, young team. To stimulate interest in the sport, our school arranged an exchange of wrestling assemblies with Paw Paw. After having had the scoring explained to us, an actual match was put on before the student body. Although our team didn't have a winning season, we believe that with renewed interest and student support the future will be promising. 91 Bob Storick Football 1,2,3,4 Basketball 1,2,3,4 Track 1 SENIOR Greg White Football 1,2,3,4 Basketball 1,2,4 Baseball 2,3,4 Track 1 Greg Stover Football 1,2,3,4 Basketball 1,2,4 Track 1,2,3,4 Jesse Ruiz Football 1,2,3,4 Basketball 1,2 Track 1,2,3,4 SHAMROCKS Denny Stacey Football 1,2,3,4 Track 2,3,4 Wrestling 4 Basketball 1,2 Bruce Borst Football 1,2,3,4 Basketball 1,2 Track 1 Rich Appelget Football 1,2,3,4 Baseball 1,2,3,4 Basketball 1,2 Nick Stemm Football 1,2,3,4 Basketball 1,2,3,4 Track 1,2 Baseball 3,4 Jim Maier Football 1 Cross Country 4 Baseball 1,2,3,4 Basketball 1,2,3,4 Phil Zech Football 1 Basketball 1,2 Wrestling 4 Joachim Erndwein Wrestling 4 Track 4 Jack Colvin Cross Country 4 Basketball 2,3,4 Track 3,4 95 Gary Rose Track 1,2,3,4 Cross-country 2 Lloyd Argue Basketball 1,2 Track 2,4 96 John Larson Baseball 3,4 Football 3 Basketball 1,2 97 ORGANIZATIONS THE STUDENT COUNCIL WORKS This year the students that comprised the Student Council were trom left to right, top row: Mr. Tom Phillips, co-sponsor, Jesse Ruiz, Craig Metz, Rick Drucker, John Jessup, Dave Sprung, Jim Maier, Dave Ammerman, Bob Storick, John Russell, Nick Stemm, and Mr. Bruce Taiclet co-sponsor; second row left to right: Shiela Franks, Judy McGath, Karen Shaff, Jan Morlock, Diane Hansen, Maureen Bedinger, Marilyn Zech, Lynn Liston, Peggv Krause, Diane Klug, Carol Clark, Anne Bennett, and Mary Ellen Kesterke; front row: Barbara Brown, George Bennett, Carol Coover, Don Lange, Debbie Drucker, Ed Wagner, Brenda Green, Pete Bennett, Barbara Lipkins, Jim Loggains, and Vicki Wilson. They have also sponsored cookie sales and have gone caroling as a group during Christmas. NATIONAL THESPIAN SOCIETY The National Thespian Society, which has a local club in the Berrien Springs High School, represents all phases of the dramatic arts. The Society encourages expression in music, dance, pantomime, drama, and comedy. By continuing the high ideals of the Greek Theater and its member Thespis, the local chapter is a firm and prominent fiber in the school, the community, and the nation. Members are admitted only after achieving the rigid requirements of the National Thespian Society. In Berrien Springs the members have distinguished themselves in many ways. Besides having parts in their many plays and musicals, students work as directors, stage managers, make-up crewmen; they work on scenery, sell tickets, and help construct the sets. The Thespians offer a wide and variant field of participation and opportunity to all students. Shown in the above photograph are the incumbent National Thespian Society members. A big event of the year is the Freshman Initiation Pizza Party. The only part not shown at the right is the sad task of clean-up. In F.H.A. you not only learn the art of cooking, but also the functions required to maintain an attractive home. Experience shows forth as Lu brings on a finished refreshment.
