This year, we were privileged to include Mr. James Bowser and Mr. Ronald Schaffer on our coaching staff. Both have successfully faced difficult decisions and enforced good training habits throughout the year. Mr. Bowser, as our head football coach, encouraged spirit and drive essentially needed in every football game. Coach Schaffer stressed the importance of continuity in practice and training for Varsity basketball. A great deal of time and effort was taken to build such qualities in our teams. The strong defensive line in football has been largely accredited to the work done by Mr. Richard Silverthorn. He has also been responsible for developing seventh and eighth grade basketball players. Junior Varsity football was coached by Mr. Thomas Phillips who also heads the Berrien Springs baseball team. Another valuable asset to our coaching staff is Mr. Bruce Taiclet, who has done an excellent job with the Junior Varsity basketball team in preparing them for future Varsity years. Co-operation conquers in sports. The coaches, players, and students are beginning to realize and accept this responsibility. All three play an important role in winning and in the promotion of good sportsmanship. Baseball and J.V. Football Coach Phillips examines football uniforms while J.V. Basketball Coach Taiclet. Head Football and Track Coach Bowser, Head Basketball Coach Schaffer, and Football Defensive Line Coach Silverthorn discuss the team’s possibilities. Allen Zech Football 1.2,3,4 Basketball 1.2,3,4 Good Spirit Prevails Throughout Season Extreme tension and anxiety are two factors of an exciting basketball game, as shown here by Allen Zech and the Brandywine defense. Jim Huckabee controls the backboard, as the other players are caught flat-footed. Another two points are added to the Shamrock score as Don Letcher shoots his deadly jump shot unmolested by Brandywine players. Howard Moyer (54) observes fruitless attempts by Coloma defense to block Glen Hass’s pass to him. Coloma defense finds it difficult to gain possession of the ball against rebounding of Howard Moyer (54) and Allen Zech (50). Allen Zech completes a layup over the outstretched hands of the Brandywine players. The team members for the 1963-1964 Shamrock basketball squad are. Row one: Managers. Pete Albrich, Wally Rose; John Stover; Coach Ron Schaffer: Dan Bixbv: Gary Caranci; and Manager. Mike Eppic. Row two: Allen Zech. Ed Adams. Dave Plangger, Jon Harner. Howard Moyer. Art Weaver.
