'Q The high school choir, under the direction of Mr. Maur- ice Wildt, had a busy year in which they sang at a meet- ing of the Berrien Springs Parent-Teacher-Student Associa- tion, at the County Hospital, at the 4-H Fall Achievement program, in the spring vocal music festival, at the Blossom Queen contest, and at the Baccalaureate services. They also presented parts of the Thanksgiving and Christmas as- semblies. ln November the group toured the Everett Piano Company at South Haven, Michigan. To highlight their year, the choir presented the operetta, The Pirates of Penzance, on February 26 and 27. The story of the operetta concerns a boy, named Fred- eric, who was to have been apprenticed to a pilot, but be- cause of a misunderstanding his nurse apprentices him to a band of pirates instead. As the curtain rises, his indentures are almost finished, and he is preparing to leave. He urges the pirates to ioin him in a more lawful call- ing. Frederic, not seeing many women, consents to take Ruth for his wife. Frederic then sees some other girls and renounces Ruth. He falls in love with Mabel, and the pirates wish to marry the other girls. The Major-General appears claiming that he is an orphan and finally dissuades them. gg Choir FIRST ROW: Dorothy Ross, Judy Debus, Judy Rudell, Lyda Chesher, Judy Walker, YY Suzanne Berkolz, Ellen Kilgore, Vivian Hass, Darlene Christy. FOURTH ROW: Larry Nelson, Bill Lewis, Larry Michael, Gordon Brigham, John Arnold. lt is discovered that Frederic's indentures are to run un- T til he is twenty-one, and since he was born in leap year, he , V has had only five birthdays. He immediately rejoins the pirates. After this the Maior-General is seized because of 3. a deception. 1 X' in The police come to his rescue. Ruth explains that the pirates are noble men who had gone wrong, and they X i - are pardoned and permitted to marry the girls. Berrien Springs looked good in their first game with Jim Sounart, the all-conference left halfback, making all of the touchdowns. ln the next three games the Shamrocks rolled over their opponents by at least one touchdown. When the Coloma game was cancelled because of the flu, the Shamrocks pre- pared to meet the Eau Claire Beavers who had also had a flu cancellation. The Shams then met the St. Joe Ponies, who, like Berrien, had a 4-O record. In that game Berrien couldn't find the goal line until late in the third period when Jim Sounart went around right end for the touchdown. He also ran over the extra point. The Watervliet Panthers thought they had the game all wrapped up on their home field when Earl Adams, right end for Berrien, caught a 30-yard pass in the end zone with about 43 seconds left in the game. Jim Sounart ran the extra point. Football FIRST ROW: Frank Shoop, Larry Rick, Gerald French, Dave Pearcy, Dale Clem, Dick Kesterke, Earl Adams, Phil Hora. When Berrien traveled to Decatur, old man winter was moving in, but this seemed to give the Shamrocks more en- thusiasm because on the first play from scrimmage Jim Sounart went about 70 yards to make the touchdown. John Nye and Frank Stuckey shared the glory with Sounart as each macle a touchdown after a long run. ln the final game of the season the Buchanan Bucks rolled over Berrien with considerable ease. Holding Berrien scoreless, the Bucks scored 31 points. The Shamrocks placed four men on the all conference squad. Jim Sounart was given left halfback, Leon Dickson, center, Jack Kretchman, right tackle, and Dennis Baab, left guard. Dale Clem and Frank Stuckey received honorable mention. The seniors in the scoring column this year were: Jim Sounart, ten touchdowns, and three extra points, John Nye, four touchdowns and three extra points, and Earl Adams, one touchdown. Date Sept. Oct. The team finished the season with eight wins and five losses with some of the wins coming from Class B schools like Dowagiac. An up and coming Brandywine team went down twice at the hands of the freshman squad while Class C Cas- sopolis downed the little Shams both times they met them. The Buchanan Bucks had a fairly easy time upsetting the Rocks the first time they met, but the second time the Bucks traveled to Berrien it was a different story as they had to play real basketball to slip by Berrien by one point. St. John's fighting Irish collapsed twice at the mercy of the freshmen while the St. Joe Bears walked away with an easy game under their belts.
