In the last two years, as a result of ex- tensive, willing practice and the undivided leadership of the director, Mr. Richard E. Peters, the band has become a precise and respected musical organization. The marching band for 55-56 had forty- eight members including the twirlers and drum maiorette, Bonnie Lotsbaich. At home football games they presented entertaining half-time shows, which were preceded by a pre-game anthem and salute to the oppos- ing team. They attended band day at the University of Michigan and took part in the mass band show. On Halloween they marched at both the Three Oaks and Berrien Springs parades. ln October the band par- ticipated in the Western Michigan Marching contest and won a first division rating. The marching band finished its season by march- ing in the Blossom Land and Memorial Day ceremonies. The concert band of fifty-six members was also active, playing a series of con- certs for the Band Parents Organization and a spring Concert in April. Thirty-two members participated in the Solo and Ensemble Contest at Kalamazoo in which many received first division ratings. They sponsored a Cum-As-U-R twirling contest on April 28 for all twirlers in the midwestern states, and the Band Parents furnished sandwiches and milk. The concert band climaxed its season by receiving a unanimous first division rating at the District Band Festival in New Buffalo and going on to the State Contest held at Muskegon, Michigan. Of these about thirty-three made the varsity club. The boys practiced hard for three weeks to get ready for their first game against New Buffalo. , but were tied In the New Buffalo game the Shamrocks got an early 6-O lead l b f the half This touchdown was the first of two to be scored against short y e ore . them all year. ln the second half the Rocks came back to win the game 26-6. The scores were 48-O over Cassopolis, 26-O over Hartford. ln a revenge tilt against Coloma for ending our 29 game streak the previous h d the season 20-19, the Comets were crushed 39-O. The Shrarnrocks t en evene score with St. Johns by a score of 24-O. In our sixth game of the season we played the St. Joe Ponies and defeated h 28-O them 4l-O. The next game with Watervliet proved stiffer, but we beat t ern . In the final game Decatur got off to a good start and became the first Little Eight Conference team to score against us. ' The final score of the game was Al-7. Thus the team ended its T955 football season undefeated. They were confer- ence champions and rated No. 2 in the State. The team has the best backfield and the hardest charging line in the area. Seven boys placed on the All-Con- ference team. They were Larry Clem, Jim Sounart, Gary Moore, Casey Clark, Ted Tucker, Jim Carter, and Neil McMillen. Larry Clem was named to the All-State team. At the end of the season a banquet for the players and coaches was given at the Green Lantern Restaurant by several local businessmen. Dick Bahlsizer from the University of Michigan gave a talk, followed by a movie of several foot- ball games. Talks were also given by the coaches, during which Coach Mowry said, This is Berrien Springs' finest team. The mothers of the players also hon- ored them with a banquet given at the elementary gym. Coach Ashdown's 55-56 Shamrocks were the first team in the history of Berrien High School to finish league competition un- defeated. The team that had been forming since the sixth grade was fully developed and all of the stalwarts were seniors. They played with the confidence and the ability that far surpassed either the fans or Coach Ashdown's greatest expectations. The Rocks handily defeated all oppo- nents with ease including the powerful class B team Buchanan and set a Little Eight record by defeating Coloma 112-75. EUJLQMGK Jesse Bright, Phil Hora, manager.
