During the three years that Mr. Nothstine was our advisor, he became most of all, our friend. Without his co-operation, helpand guidance we could. never havesucceeded. as we have. Mr, Nothstine was graduated from Mancelona High School where he participated in football, basketball, baseball, and track. He then entered Central Michigan College where he partici- pated in varsity football and baseball. After being graduated, he taught at Grand Blanc and Caledonia. Mr. Nothstine came to Berrien Springs in 1942. He coached basketball and base- ball, in 1944 he started coaching football and in 1945 track. He taught shop, driver training, and mechanical drawing. Under Coach Nothstine's able leadership the Shamrocks achieved their first 'Little 8' championship. This was obtained only by hard training, hard playing, fine team work, and a will to win which Coach instilled in the boys. Mr. Nothstine was a very loyal and active member of the Masonic Order. He also was a supporter of the Little League and in the Boy Scouts. To the memory of Mr. lloyd Nothstine, who so unselfishly gave us his time and advice, we dedicate the 1955 Cla Forward With a summer filled with pleasures and disappointments, behind them, the students of Berrien Springs High School entered an eventful 1954-1955 school year, Many new names appeared in the class rolls and faculty list. New equipment was put to good use during the school year, especially the lockers in the first floor hall of the high school. A new ceiling in the gymnas- ium and band room aided both performers and audience. A public address sys- tem was installed during the summer vacation, it saved many footsteps for students and faculty. A review of the events which brought excitement, downfalls, and honors are found in each division of the book. Numerous school plays and extra-curricular activities are found in their respective divisions. Good reading to all who scan this book. Bonnie Brown Editor Adminisf on DOUGIAS H. Yet it seems like only yesterday that we started as timid freshmen. Looking back through those four years we saw many things which our class did. When we were freshmen in 1951, we sponsored a roller skating party and also a dance. Mr. I. Northstine was a class sponsor. In our sophomore year we ordered our class rings, which arrived in May. We sold candy bars and potato chips, and checked coats at all home basket- ball games to raise money. We started an annual family night dinner for the class members and their parents. Mr. Nothstine guided us again this year. In our junior year we had a magazine sale during the fall and Roberta Jesswein's team won. This year we had our family night dinner and Christmas party combined. During the year we sold popcorn at basketball games, and a memory book, School Daze, For enjoyment we held class dances. ln April we presented the junior play, No Boys Second Semester Officers Dale smekey, President Linton Schinske, Vice-President Pat Tropp, Secretary Dick Wetzel, Treasurer Marcia Gark, Reporter ,. 2 on t Juf 14 Senior Officers First Semester Officers Jim Shank, President Marcia Gark, Vice President Pat T1-opp, Secretary Dick Wetzel, Treasurer Norm Stemm, Reporter Class Flower Red Rose Class Colors White and Crimson Class Motto Life Is What You Make Allowed. Uncer Mr. Nothstine's direction, we succeeded in all of our activities. Our senior year, has been the most memorable of the four. We worked hard, and also had most fun. We frantically tried to earn enough money for the senior trip to Washington D,C. We had a conces- tion stands and sold popcorn and ice cream bars at all of the home football games. Paper drives and bake sales also helped raise our funds. ln Novem- ber the senior play, The Campbells are Coming, was presented under the direction of Miss Rose Mary Good. We also had a spaghetti supper and a ham supper, which were the two biggest money raising projects of the year. Our advisor for the senior year was Mr. Ado Tenaglia. Coach Bill Mowry put a winning combination together and the Rocks crushed the Bisons 34 to 0 in the first game of the season. The game was highlighted by tailback Larry Clem's scoring twenty-one points. One of the most beautiful plays of the game came in the third period when Clem looped a long pass and hit right halfback George Shafer for forty-five yards and the score. In their next outing, the Green romped over the highly favored Cassopolis Rangers 38 to 12, for their twenty-seventh straight win. Cass scored first when Henry McNary went seventy-eight yards for the TD and went ahead 6 to O. The Green came back, went ahead, and with a substantial lead won the game. Again Clem had two TD's and 188 yards by rushing, The third game was featured by the intercepting of a pass by lineman Paul Gillis and running 90 yards for the TD. Hartford got their TD on a pass from Tom MacKenzie to Frank Balsis for 30 yards and the score. Berrien won by 27-6 . The next game, with Coloma, the Green fell before the determined Comets, 20 to 19 and one of the longest wining streaks in the State of Michigan came to an end. The Green opened the scoring with an electrifying pass from Clem to Shafer for 60 yards. The Green were ahead 14 to 7 at the half but fell behind and missed an extra point attempt. In the next game the Rocks fell, this time 21 to 19 to Benton Harbor St. johns in the last forty seconds of play when St. johns scored on a pass. The Rocks dominated the first half not allowing St. Johns to cross into Berrien territory. The Shamrocks, fired up the loss of two games, in the sixth game took it out on the Ponies of St. Joseph 38 to O in only three quarters of play when the lights went out because of electric power failure. Shafer, Clem, and Shembarger each scored two TD's. The Rocks Racked up 219 yards to the Ponies' 48 in that game. 52 L. French, D. Clem, D. Burgess, G. French The next game was with Watervliet and the Green clad won 33 to 6. Held 6 to 6 at the half, the Green exploded for four touchdowns in the last half. Shafer and Shembarger rushed for a total of 282 yards of the 337 total yards gained. Shafer and Clem each had two TD's. The Panthers lone score was in the second quarter on a 54 yard dash by halfback Lynn Parker. In the last game, the Shamrocks scored a 47 to 0 landslide victory over Decatur. At the half, the score was 19 to O. Shafer scored 4 TD's by Clem throwing passes and Schinske blocking. Coach Mowry substituted often in this game with Dick Shafer and Ken McNeely showing promise. The Shamrocks started the season with a big bang by beating the Hartford Indians 87 to 50. The Rocks then cooled off and lost to Watervliet 63-53. This defeat didn't discourage the Rocks, they came back with a 68-48 win over St. joe Ponies, and a 78-53 victory over Cassopolis Rangers. The big Rocks dropped a heart breaker to the Buchanan Bucks non- conference game, 54-49, The Rocks came back to win the last eleven games. They whipped St. johns 56-43 and then walloped Decatur 54-25. Then came the biggest score of the season for the Rocks, when they smashed Coloma 106-45. This score set a new record for the Little Eight conference. Coloma previously held the record with 102 points. The Rocks defeated Cassopolis for the second time 63-48. Then the Rocks were ready to meet Buchanan by whom they were previously defeated this season. The Rocks won 42-35. Berrien was 54 one game out of first place. The conference leader Watervliet, was next in the schedule. This was the biggest game of the season for the Shams, who were determined to get even with the Panthers, Berrien played a very good defensive and offen- sive game to beat Watervliet 82-73. Berrien next played the St. joe Ponies whom they defeated 63-38. Then the Rocks defeated Decatur 68-46. The Rocks played St. Johns again who they topped by a very close score fo 40-36.Berrien's lowest score of the season, The Rocks finished their season with a victory over Coloma 73-58 to win the Little Eight Cham- pionship. The scoring for the season was shared equally by the starting five who were Dick Stover, Casey Clark, Jon Wolcott, Gary Moore, and Larry Clem. The Rocks will lose four seniors from this year's squad.
