JOHN MARTIN BRAWDERS The staff of the 1954 Canoe proudly dedicates this book to Mr. John Martin Brawders, who has been our class advisor since we entered Berrien Springs high school four years ago Mr. Brawders graduated from the Jefferson, Wisconsin, high school in 1944, and served two years with the United States Navy on an amphibious landing craft. He entered North Central College in Napierville, Illinois, and received a Bachelor of Science degree. During his four years at Berrien Springs he has taught biology, general science, chemis- try and physics. He is recognized by his colleagues and students, old and new, as a fine instructor and a friend. To this man who has given so generously of his time and advice to the Senior students of Berrien, this 1954 Canoe is dedicated 4 Mr. Brawders and his wife, Hilda, and their children, John Patrick, five, Catherine, four, and Constance one. This year we are seniors and about to graduate. It seems only yesterday that we started as insignificant freshmen. Remember our first year? We thought how wonderful it was to finally be a high school member. How we rushed to make classes on time! We didn't have many social activities that year but we did have a hay ride. What fun! Our sponsors were Mr. August Lange and Miss Mary Graham. The second year we were more active. The main activity was to place orders for class rings. The rings arrived late in April. Other activities consisted of fudge and bake sales, and a roller skating party at Central Docks in Benton Harbor. Sponsors were Mr. John Brawders and Mr. Burton Aldrich. During our iunior year we planned the Junior-Senior Prom. We also held a bake sale, a Christmas dinner, and put on the class play, 'Who Killed Aunt Caroline. The annual magazine sale which is held annually by each iunior class was very profitable and the biggest proiect we undertook that year. Our sponsors were Mr. John Brawders, Miss Jean Wagner and Miss Flora Armour. Our senior year we frantically began to try and earn some money for the class trip. We held two bake sales, sold ice cream bars at basketball games and in school, gave a play, 'Girl Shy, held a chicken supper, ran a con- cession stand at Football games and sold cakes at basketball games. All the profits from these activities went into the funds for the senior trip to Washington, D.C., which was late in April. We then graduated in spectacular style and went our merry ways. Our goal was to set up the new high school library. The Library Club is made up of high school students who work in the library during their free periods. This provides a trained student librarian during all the periods ofthe day to aid students to find material and to help check out books. The club processed all the older books ofthe library and approximately 600 new books that have been received by the library this year. The Dewey Decimal Classification system used in most high schools, colleges, and public libraries is now in effect in our high school. Rules and regulations for the proper use of the library were presented to the student body. Several parties were held during the year at the homes of the members. The highlight of the year was a field trip to the Chicago Public Library. flJ4afufGZuL ,.........-..., I za 4.Jl.14. Managers Clem, Jesswein, 4 Berrien started the 1953 campaign with a record of seventeen straight victories and only four lettermen to protect it. Coach Bill Mowry quickly molded a winning combination and the Green-clads squeeked out o narrow 14-13 over Cassopolis, the pre-season favoriete for the Little Eight conference crown. The Rocks had forged out ahead 7-6 with four minutes remaining when Cass's great runner, Henry McNary grabbed a short pass and zigzagged 60 yards for a tally. Berrien took the kickoff with fullback Briggs biting off a 40 yard chunk on a flat pass. ln their next outing the Greens squeeked out another win. A 6-0 decision over New Buffalo. Victory was much the same as the 1952 victory over the Bisons, except that the T.D. was scored on the last play of the first half instead of the last play in the game. The third game was featured by the first of many blocked punts by the hard-charging Berrien line. The final score was a 26-8 verdict over Hartford. Next, against Coloma, Berrien had to fight for a hard earned 13-12 victory in the last minute. This victory was given to the Green line as end, Dick Stover, blocked a Comet punt and quarterback, Don Shembarger, scooped up the loose ball and scampered for the winning T.D. Coach Bill Mowry figuring football plays. The Shamrocks decisioned Benton Harbor St Johns 20-12 for their fifth victory. For their sixth victory of the season, and 23 straight win, Berrien smashed St. Joseph Catholic 19-0 with sophomore tailback Larry Clem rattling off two T.D. The seventh win was the big one. .A tremend ous 20-6 defeat of Watervliet, as the Green rushed for 402 yards. After giving up an early touchdown, the big Green smashed for two successive T.D.'s with Glenn Briggs carrying the leather. The second was set up by a blocked punt by Dale Ewalt, the sixth blocked punt of the season for Berrien. The final encounter was a 31-12 victory over Decatur as Coach Mowry substituted freely throughout the game. Captain Ron Schmal and Coach Bill Mowry with Little Eight football trophy. FOOT BALL CHE ERLEADERS The group that plays an important part in the Shamrocks sports program is the cheerleaders. Their vibriant personalities stimulated true sportsmanship when they lead the school songs and yells at games and pep rallys. The season after that was hot and cold First winning a game, then losing one. The Shamroclcs placed fourth behind Watervliet, Decatur and Benton Harbor St. Johns in their first year as members of the Little Eight Conference. 'J I . They won the district championship at Niles by beating New Buffalo, Edwordsburg and upsetting highly favored Three Oaks 57-56 for the District title. The season came to an end a game later when Wayland upset the Boys in Green at the regionals, 52-4l. The team was led by Jerry Weber, high scoring forward, who headed the Conference in scoring, with a 14.7 average. Berrien Springs will lose five seniors from this year's squad. This year's baseball season was started with the intended purpose of making this sport at Berrien Springs a winning proposition. Coach Bill Griffin had nine lettermen to work with, V headed by pitcher, Gene McBee: outfielder, Ralph Dinges, shortstop, Dave Kugel. Shortstop, Larry A Clem, pitcher, Glenn Briggs, second baseman, Paul Hoge, oitcher, Pat Riley, and catcher, Paul Gillis were the other returnees. Berrien's teams in the past have only vied in conference competition, but in this edition of baseball the Shamrocks will play a 15 to 20 game schedule encountering class A and B teams. To Mr. William Griffin of Worcester, Mass- achusetts, had fallen the iob of raising Berrien Spring's sagging baseball fortunes. Griffin, Assistant football coach and freshman basket ball mentor, is rich in baseball experience. Besides four years of varsity ball at Marietta College, Marietta, Ohio, Griffin played in l947 and l948 with East Douglas l949-50 for the Norton Company both in Blackstone Valley league of Massachu- setts. ln 'l95l-52 Griffin played for Crompton- Knowles, Worcester city champs both years. While playing for East Douglas, Griffin played for .Jack Barry, baseball coach at Holy it 'i Cross and i952 NCAA baseball Coach ofthe V ' Year. As this year's track season approached Coach Ashdown was faced with rebuilding last year's Class C runners-up. Ashdown lost Charles Harding, class C high-hurdles champion, Chet Warsco who tied for first among high iumpers, .lack Theirbach, broad iumper and sprinter, Dale Whetstone, sprinter and hurdler and Charles Clark, half-miler. Coach Ashdown had ten lettermen returning from last year's squad. Including Glenn Briggs, sprinter, George Shafer, sprinter and hurdler and .lim Shank, a very fine half-miler. NJQMJM4 Wm W. I.
