VARSITY LINE-UP D. Whetstone (RHB), B. Spaulding (RE), J. Robbins (RT), R. Prillwitz (QB), R. Lucas (LT), G. Briggs (FB), R. Schmal (RG), J. Thicrbach (I.HB), D. Wilson (C), C. Clark (LG), C. Harding (LE). Football spirit and enthusiasm reached great heights this year as our team won the Little Eight Championship for the second consecutive year. The seven conference victories and one non-conference victory brought our school its first unbeaten and untied season, and also the honor of being selected by the Detroit Free Press as the State’s second best Class C team. The team, operating from the single wing, scored 238 points during the season, with the opposition being held to 55. Jack Thierbach, Dale Whetstone, and Glenn Briggs brought many headaches to Little Eight coaches as they planned defenses to stop them. This trio scored 168 points during the season. Their success would certainly have been limited without the blocking back, Roy Prillwitz. No back is better than the seven men he has in front of him. Our fine backfield was due to the stalwarts up front. Harding, Clark, Wilson, Schmall, Lucas, Robbins, and Spaulding blasted the way to our victories. The Ewalt twins, Dale and Dean played key defensive roles in this year’s team. We expect to hear a lot about them next year. Whetstone, Thierbach, Clark, and Dean Ewalt were named to the Allconference team. Charley Clark again had the honor of being selected on the Allstate first team as a guard. From the 32 to 7 victory over Cassopolis in the opener, to the 51 to 0 thumping of Decatur in the finale, our boys played inspired football. However, there were some anxious moments. There was the New Buffalo game (non-conference) where we ran up twenty-seven first downs but only scored one tally in the last minute of the final quarter. In the St. Joseph Catholic game we achieved a 26 point lead and found ourselves hanging on 26 to 19 as the final gun sounded. The Watervliet game had everyone jumping as we went behind for the first time during the season 8 to 7. Here again, the boys would not be defeated and came back, winning the toughest gridiron game of the season with the wedge play. The line was given credit for that 14 to 8 fight. The team elected Jack Thierbach as Captain and Mary Stroud as Football Queen at the end of the football season.
