We settled down to make money for the biq lunior-Senior prom which took place on May l2 in the hiqh school gymnasium. ln the annual magazine sale the class earned over SZOO. We then gave a sock dance, following one of the basketball games. The class sold plastic covers and managed the concessions at the holiday tournaments. W'e elected our officers for the first semester. We gave the important position of pres' ident to Eugene Enders. Sheila Gerard was our choice for vice president. We chose Loraine Hildebrand to record the minutes, and left Dick Tropp to contend with all of the financial rnatters. Beverly Brant was our reporter, and Don Crawford was chosen to represent our class as the student council representative. We certainly owe a great deal of our success to our class sponsors, Mr. Nothstine and Miss Alice Swenson. Qur first party was at Central Docks where everyone improved his skating technique. We contributed a large sum of money to the P.T.A. from the profit which our class made during the annual P.T.A. carnival. In November we sponssorecl a Sadie Hawkins' Dance with a floor show which illuss trated the origin of Sadie Hawkins day. lt was enjoyed by all who attended. Many of them try hard with somewhat meager results. Many try hard with much better results. There are some, which is still normal, who exert little effort yet they lead the pack. ln other respects this group deserves special recognition. They volunteered to earn the money to eauip the eighth grade room with dark shades in an effort to promote visual edu- cation. They worked for approximately A two weeks in October of l949, collecting waste paper which they sold in Benton ' Harbor. This proiect, which produced five tons of waste paper, netted them 34400. This sum was slightly more than half of what they needed to balance they agreed, at a reg' equip the room. This year the band nearly doubled in size, and a greatly improved group blossomed out in handsome new uniforms, purchased by the school board. ln addition to appearances at football and basketball games the band appeared at the May P.T.A. meeting in its Spring Concert and competed in the District Band Contest at Bronson, Michigan. Mr. Clarence Clark assisted Mr. Burton Aldrich, the conductor, giving individual and small group instruction which helped greatly to improve the playing of newcomers to the organization. The Berrien Springs High School Glee Club consisted oi iorty members this year. The girls met on Monday and Wednesday, while the boys sang on Tuesday and Thursday. Both groups met together on Friday for practice. Our director was Mr. Burton Aldrich. He was assisted by Mary Lou Richards as accompanist. ln the spring of the year, the glee club attended the Berrien County Vocal Music Festival at St. loseph. The director was Maynard Klein oi the University ot Michigan. A representative group of glee club members also attended the May Vocal Festival at Western Michigan College at Kalamazoo. Having lost seven starters trorn the l948 team, the Sharnroclcs were rebuilding tor coming seasons. The team commenced the year without the services ci Weber, 'Wilson, Locke, Reinebold, Kina, Fay and Henderson. Their boots were ditticult to till. But after a slow start, the team really showed the tiqhtinq spirit that rnade everyone happy to be a Shamrock booster. The tearn will lose the best brealifaway ball carrier in the school's history in the araduation ot Dale Sunday. We shall also lose one ot the best detensive men in Berrien history when Duane Wreaqlesworth qraduates. These two boys will be hard to replace. The l95O season, says Coach Lloyd Nothstine, will be the iirst year tor the newly organized Little Eiaht Conference. The Shanirocks were stopped by a determined Cassopolis team on the first night of district tournament play. The starting line-up was composed of Duane Vlfregglesworth, center: Buss Smith, guardp Dale Sunday, forward, and lack Enders, forward. Dean Quick and Herman Saitz alternated for the other guard position. Enders was the only starter back from last year, but Wregglesworth and Sunday both saw plenty of action. lt was an up-and-down season for the Sharnrocks, who won four straight games, de- feating Bridgrnan 43-42, to lead the Conference at Christmas. A fighting New Troy team Gave us our first defeat in the Holiday Tournaments, 30-28, but Berrien rallied to defeat Eau Claire and Galien for the consolation trophy. Included were tour sophomores and two freshmen. Scoring was rather evenly divided be- tween these six, with 6'-4 Sophomore 52 Dick Tropp leading the pack with 103 points in lO games. Freshman Dale Whet- stone poured in 89 points in ll contests. These two were followed by Sophomore Charley Lindt with 70 points in l3 games, Freshman lack Thierbach with Sl in l5 games, Sophomore George Smith with ESO in nine tilts, and Sophomore Gerry Ros- lawski with 55 in l3.
