Text from Pages 1 - 164 of the 1957 volume:

SUPERINTENDENT'S MESSAGE My association with the patrons, faculty, and students in this community has been a most enjoyable one. I have found a student body composed of fine and pleasant pupils and a community of fine and progressive people. I have found a faculty which as a whole is willing and happy to adapt to the requests of a new administration. The community has made great strides forward with their schools and still has farther to go. Additional classrooms are needed for the new high school and improvements need to be made in the elementary school, in the old high school and on the grounds. Education, as with any business, must move forward. There is no standing still or we drop behind as other schools progress. With the continued support of this community this school can continue to progress and will maintain its standing as one of the fine schools in Southeast Missouri. It is the aim of your administration to provide the very best that can be had in the way of educational oppor- tunity for our youth. IN MEMORIAM WALTER CLAUDE THURSTON 1901-1957 The students and citizens of Bernie lost a friend and public ser- vant when Walter Claude Thurston, a school board member for sixteen years, passed away on March 18, 1957. Mr. Thurston’s untimely death was a great loss to both Bern- ie and Bernie School. Two daugh- ters, Mary, a junior, and Shirley, a freshman, are attending school at this time. ©foesinq the ‘Ben'1 Sunset and eveninq star, 6)nd one dear sail for mej Qnd mai| there be no moaninq of the bar, ‘Wken I puf ouf to sea. 3or fkouqh from ouf __J-— our houme of Time and 'Ploee clhe flood may bear me far d hope fo see my Pilot face fo face ------- — cWhen I have crossed the haK . .
