' Something Special A very artistic person, Starr plays the guitar, draws, and paints. She is a student at The lamaica Art Center. ln addition, she is a serious student of dance and is in her seventh year of training at the Bernice lohnson Dance Studio where she is learning in depth about balleft, tap interpretative, mod- ern, and jazzdan cing. She has participated in six dance concerts at New York's Lincoln Center. Starr, a member of the Girl Scouts, is a Cadet and has earned scores of badges. When too young to be a volunteer on her own, Starr used to accompany her Aunt Dorothy who was a volunteer at Queens Shelter CSociety for the Prevention of Cruelty to Childrenl. This experience prepared Starr for many of life's battles around her. This summer, as well as the summer of 1978, she has volunteered to serve as a Red Cross volunteer at Long lsland's Iewish Hospital which she is looking forward to with great enthusiasm. A deeply religious person, she is a member of the New Covenant Church of Christ tBaptis'tJ where she is a member of the Sunday School's Intermediate Class. When asked about her life's philosophy, Starr said, l believe, in truth. She paused and continued, I believe that the truth will set you free and if people stick to the trufth, they will always be in the clear. A very pensive and concerned person, Starr plans to .study medicine in order to become a doctor. She feels that the medical profession will afford her an opportunity to serve people. For relaxation, Starr enjoys hobbies of singing, dancing, and drawing or painting. To Starr Dorothea Spann, OUR Neighborhood lmprovtement Association wants you to know that we are in- deed very proud of your membership. We are looking forward to your years of adulthood as we dedicate the following words to you: GOD made the lovely sunshine And the blossoms on the trees. The rainbows and the starlight And the gentle springtime breeze. GOD gave the earth its beauty And as a final touch, He ble.ssed our lives by giving us A beautiful fyoungl lady like you. Reprinted with permission of the editor of OUR Neighborhood Improvement Association's Newsletter, Mrs. Louise Cason. P.S.
