O I O I Students Against Driving Drunk began in 1981 as an experiment at Wayland High School in Massachusetts. S.A.D.D. quickly spread to over 6,000 high schools in the United States. Its founder, Mr. Robert Anastas, came to Berner in 1983 to initiate S.A.D.D. In December, 1983, the S.A.D.D. organization, led by senior chairperson Moira Tuohey and junior chairpersons john Blood and Alan Berman, held a very successful assembly. Two very distinguished guests, New York State Assemblyman, Mr. Philip Healey, and Massapequa Park Mayor, Mr. Robert Thompson attended and made the students aware of how dangerous drinking and driving can be. At the heart of the S.A.D.D. program is a contract between high school students and their parents. The teenagers pledge that they will call home rather than driving drunk or accepting a ride from an intoxicated friend. The parents in turn, promise to give a ride to the student, without an argument or questions. What makes the S.A.D.D. method Work is the recognition that teenage drinking and drunk driving are two very different problems, to be dealt with separately. The contract has helped to bridge the communication gap between parents and teens. Part of the reason S.A.D.D. committee was so suc- cessful this year was awareness, both community and school. Moira, Iohn, and Alan attended many rallies Where they met with other S.A.D.D. representatives from other high schools, and brainstormed ideas. Many pins, buttons, and a billboard in Massapequa Park, all distributed by S.A.D.D. at Berner, proved the awareness of this problem.
