A Season of Rebuilding Young Team Fights Hard Led by seniors Rich Schwarz, Jim McCormack, Tom Koelbel, and Paul Guardiola, the Berner Basketball Team experienced a rebuilding season. Although they finished in last place, the Bisons lost by very small margins in most of their games. Berner showed its strong points were perimeter shooting and defense. Sophomores Ciro Ambrosio, Dennis Cutts, and Tim Buckley contributed greatly to the team. East Meadow was defeated twice during the season, as Berner ended with a 2-9 record. Captains Rich Schwarz and Jim McCormack and the other seniors are graduating, but next season looks hopeful with three starters returning. Far Right: Rich Schwarz going in for a rebound. Developing Talents That Produce Champions Wrestling Team Finishes Season Undefeate The Berner Wrestling team finished up its best season ever. The Berner matmen finished up the dual meet season with a phenomenal 11-0 record! They were sixth out of fifty-two teams in Nassau County. The team's success has been accredited primarily to the squad's exceptional team work. The experienced varsity members such as Corey Kilgannon, Paul McCormick, Mike Bevilaqua, Rob Payne and Ronni Yarkin have all been con- sistent producers. However, many seniors coming out for their first year on the team gave the team that Winning edge. These seniors include: Mario Bowers, Ioe Castelli, Brian McGee, Anthony Tetro and Iim Ioblon. lim Ioblon has been quite a productive addition to the team, not only in winning his matches but by giving the team a sense of unity it needs in order to function. Another key element in the team's success has been the coaching. lim Nordland and Ioe Ferrugia have both instilled the disciplined skill needed for a team to prosper. The team was a runnerup in the Division tournament. Berner produced three champions: Kery Kilgannon, Mike Bevilacqua, and Jim Ioblon. Other finalists include: Rob Florie, Ron Yarkin, Phil Florie, Corey Kilgannon, Iohn Pinna, and Matt Killikelly. Berner finished strongly in the counties finishing in 6th place in the most competitive county in N.Y.S. Mike Bevilacqua placed first in 132 lbs. and later went on to place 4th in the N.Y.S. Championships. Other place winners were: Rob Florie 15th at 91 lbsl and Ron Yarkin C3rd at 98 1bs.D. Another notable mention would have to go to sophomore Phil Florie who has done an amazing job this year by also going undefeated throughout his dual meet matches and has pulled off some amazing upsets. The highlight of the season came on Ianuary 28, when Berner easily defeated the Chiefs by a score of 38-10! Although key victories were secured by Phil Florie, Robert Payne, and Mario Bowers, each team member was responsible for the exciting victory. The Bisons continued to savor victory every time t ey graced the mat and qualified for the county Dual Meet Championships, an honor bestow- ed on only the ten best teams in Nassau.
