Coach Chris Sweeney credited the team's success to the large number of seniors and the dedicated juniors. Proof that hard work leads to success was their victory over Hicksville, the County Champs. Captains John Whelan, Greg Marron, and Fred Franke along with Ed Bauer, Kevin Driscoll, Andy Car- bone, Iohn Clancy, Rich Schwarz, Vinnie Ortolani, Matt Ryan, Doug Weigand, and Mark Urban led the team to the playoffs where they lost in the second round in a shoot-out. Congratulations to All County player Iohn Whelan, All Conference players Andy Carbone and Rich Schwarz, and All Division player Fred Franke. Hard Working Players Prove Experience Pays Qff The tennis team this year had a record of 8-7, a big improvement over last year's performance. Coach Netter provided a great learning experience for both beginning players and for those players return- ing for yet another season of phenomenal tennis. Constance Calma, a sophomore, had an outstanding season, and proceeded to the All-County Competition. The amazing first doubles team of seniors, Natalie Comens and Mary Ellen Conners proved to be a fine asset to the team. Claudia Fer- mature's aggressive play was very successful in the third singles spot. Despite Eileen Ellis' early season illness, she proved to be very sup- portive and provided much encouragement for the rest of the team. Peggy Sacino exhibited fine play in the second doubles position. Sue Gay showed dedication to the team and fine sportsmanship throughout the season. The '83 tennis team was unique in many ways. The teammate's feel- ings of camaraderie and friendship are not likely to be seen again.
