Berner High School Girls Varsity Soccer Team won its fourth consecutive Nassau County Section VIII Championship, its third Long Island Championship, and its first New York State Class A Title. During the regular Fall season, the team recorded 15 wins, 1 loss, and 1 tie. In the County Playoffs, the Bisons defeated Farmingdale C2-OJ, Port Washington C1-OD, and beat East Meadow Q2-OJ, for the Nassau County Championship. For the third consecutive year, the team won the New York State Southeast Regional Long Island Championship by defeating Northport High School C1-Ol, in a shootout. The team then advanced in the state tournament and secured the State Eastern Regional title by overwhelming Washingtonville High School C5-OJ, The team then traveled to Cortland, where it triumphed over East Syracuse Minoa High School K3-Ol, for its first New York State Public High School Class A Championship. During the season the team scored an astounding 118 goals and gave up only 6. The team's record at the end of the season was 21 wins, I loss and 1 tie. Leading the team to its victorious season were All American and All County player lean Varas, All County players Dawn Carboni and Kristen Moller. A h .xg ,H ,N L I Ytf?xi-bk: 5 1',.,V,, 7 ' 'sc-FAfter losing five- seniors last year, the outlook for the 1-98-3-1-984 team was not hopeful. To many people's surprise, but not to the girls, the team was very successful. Withfxmvr returning players from the varsity team and fi-ve from the junior varsity, the girls took their skill and hard work and made them into an encouraging team. Under the coaching of Dot Mayorga, the girls started their season in late August with very strenuous tryouFsT!The hard work paid off when the team compiled a 6-6 league record. Seniors Maureen Nolan, Madeline Petrizzi Ccaptainj, Flo Soviero Ccap- tainj, Ioyce Primm, and Ann Fargione led the team to two very close games against Pequa, the Conference leaders. Maureen's consistent serv- ing and spiking, along with Flo's setting and Madeline's bumping, showed what is meant by Senior Power.
