Right: Cheerleaders sparking up the crowd, Bottom Left: Senior running back Vin- nie Kaye breaking a tackle and running for a touchdown. Bottom Right: Seniors clowning around before a big game. In a high school football preseason article, the Bisons were called Munchkins because of the size of the players. The Bison seniors finished in fourth place in their division with a winning five and three season, despite this misnomer. To the seniors on the team, the Berner-Pequa game was more impor- tant than usual because they knew that if they defeated Pequa, it would be the first time in their high school years that this was accomplished. The Bisons got their wish on October 29 when they defeated Pequa by a score of 23-15 on Berner's own field. Coach Bob Dell, along with the rest of Berner High School Wishes to congratulate All-County player John Dattero, who also was selected as an All-Conference player with teammate Joe Lizzio. The All-League players are: Ioe Lizzio, Iohn Dattero, Ioe Lunz, Vinnie Kaye, Brian Miller, and Iim Beato. Other seniors who are to be congratulated for a fine season are: Keith Schilling, Ioe Kelleher, Ioe Castelli, Brian McGee, Andy Bentz, Mario Bowers, Charlie DiSanto and lim Ioblon. In the beginning of the season, Coach McGovern evaluated the team as inex- perienced due to the large number of underclassmen, but enthusiastic. Badminton is probably the least talked about team in Berner. Yet its record for the past several years ranks with those of other good teams here. The team has spirit, and each girl is loyal and dedicated to the sport. Mr. Lou N etter, the coach of the team for several years, has remained a clear ex- ample of the dedication of this group. Chris Viladesau, a senior member with three years on the team, is one of the best doubles players there is. Her drive and hard work have led to her position of first doubles, something she should be very proud of. Marietta Cavassa has become a crucial part of the team since her entry two seasons ago. Singles or doubles, she always plays well and encourages her fellow players to do the same. Donna Lee, a three year member, and Donna Panico, in her first season, are the remaining two seniors. Their winning combination this year has provided the team with a lot of spirit. These girls get out there and have fun. The team would be nowhere without its non- senior members. Q . a O I O I Students Against Driving Drunk began in 1981 as an experiment at Wayland High School in Massachusetts. S.A.D.D. quickly spread to over 6,000 high schools in the United States. Its founder, Mr. Robert Anastas, came to Berner in 1983 to initiate S.A.D.D. In December, 1983, the S.A.D.D. organization, led by senior chairperson Moira Tuohey and junior chairpersons john Blood and Alan Berman, held a very successful assembly. Two very distinguished guests, New York State Assemblyman, Mr. Philip Healey, and Massapequa Park Mayor, Mr. Robert Thompson attended and made the students aware of how dangerous drinking and driving can be. At the heart of the S.A.D.D. program is a contract between high school students and their parents. The teenagers pledge that they will call home rather than driving drunk or accepting a ride from an intoxicated friend. The parents in turn, promise to give a ride to the student, without an argument or questions. What makes the S.A.D.D. method Work is the recognition that teenage drinking and drunk driving are two very different problems, to be dealt with separately. The contract has helped to bridge the communication gap between parents and teens. Part of the reason S.A.D.D. committee was so suc- cessful this year was awareness, both community and school. Moira, Iohn, and Alan attended many rallies Where they met with other S.A.D.D. representatives from other high schools, and brainstormed ideas. Many pins, buttons, and a billboard in Massapequa Park, all distributed by S.A.D.D. at Berner, proved the awareness of this problem.
