These words were to have been spoken by President John F. Kennedy in Dallas, Texas in 1963. Such utterances come to mind as we celebrate the Bicentennial of our nation. Our magnificent past provides us with guides to present actions and future aspirations. In this year, the year of Berner High School's Class of 1976, let us be fully aware of our great history, our present opportunity, and our manifest destiny. The question of whether or not there is a need for an additional student newspaper in our school district has been raised in both high schools. We, the staff of Spectrum, feel that it is our obligation to state our position as an alternate news service. Both Bemer and Massapequa High ,schools have student newspapers dealing mainly with the reporting of school activities. Each may be adequate in the eyes of many students and we of Spec- trum have no desire to compete with these publications. In fact, our basic goals are the same - to provide students with knowledge of school and community activities through objective and well-informed reporting. However, we feel that because we are a completely student run and financed newspaper we have fewer restrictions on what we .say and how we say it. We welcome all well-written articles of per- tinent and informative content. In addition, we would like to print creative works, such as short stories, poetry, drawings and photography. The wealth of talent in the student bodies of both schools is infinite and virtually undeveloped. Student criticism of existing conditions in the school and community are often written off as naive or absurd. Hopefully, our newspaper will be able to present problems that students encounter and offer possible solutions. Another aspect of Spectrum is necessary to consider. In this school district, competition between Berner and Massapequa encompasses all fields of interest, from academic achievement to sports and music. Contact between students of both schools is minimal and few organizations exist consisting of co-operating students of both schools. Each school is a separate, independent entity. Most functions in one school are not publicized in the others, thus students are not aware of what the other school has to offer in recreational or social activities. Our staff is comprised of students of both schools and we hope to provide information of' interest affecting all students of this district. Spectrum has one obligation - to you the student of Massapequa and Bemer. We would like to provide students with an outlet for ex- pressing a spectrum of viewpoints and creativity. We want to work for expressing a spectrum of viewpoints and creativity. We want to work for and with you. If you are interested in writing or in helping with the technical details of Spectrum please come to our Sunday night meetings by contacting a member of our staff. In order for Spectrum to exist we need you and your support. SPECTRUM STAFF l . K 3 li X , E Ray Russolillo Co-Editor Sue Bernstein Co-Editor Bill Malloy Bus. Brian Flood - Yearbook Advisor Wisanda '76 was an experience which began a little more than a year ago. Many have been involved in this undertaking while a select few have been devoted. Wisanda's assistant editors DONN HIRSCHMANN and STEVE CARDINO Calias Barry Manilowj were the foundations of this book. Donn was unquestionably the only one of us who never really permitted it all to get to him. His smile, sense of humor and wonderfully optimistic viewpoint, even at the worst of times Clike when we were meeting that last deadline or when the file cabinet jammedj were my best sources of encouragement. He was always the one to turn to when you needed that little boost - that little bit of understanding. You have a definite potential in the field of logo selection. To Steve, I can only say I'm sorry we only met this past year. It is a shame not to have known such a creative, reliable and imaginative person throughout high school. You never seemed to complain about the demands of the yearbook, but rather were more concerned with creating a masterpiece of a publica- tion. I hope you are not too disillusioned with the final outcome. If for nothing else, I can thank Wisanda for introducing us and permitting a solid friendship to be nurtured between us. Contrary to popular advice, you do not crop with your feet. BOB LEVIN was the spice at many of our meetings Cespecially those early Sunday morning ones and those often rowdy Friday afternoon meetings j. His unique views on duck hunting and women's lib Cseatcov- ers??J were interesting, though often volatile discussion topics. Many thanks for those last minute photos which I always seemed to be asking for. I hope, for your sake, that there never is a devil dog shortage. Having PEGGY LANTRY on one's staff is undoubtedly a supreme compliment to any publication. Such fine artwork and cartoons are unique and remarkable in their ability to capture the spirit of an age and a place . She consistently surpassed my expectations and never complained about the phenomenal amount of artworks we requested . May Doonesbury live in your heart forever! JEAN RENDE was our financial backbone. Unfortunately she never revealed to any of us her secret to obtaining those hundreds of dollars in ads. EILEEN KUCHLEWSKI and TERESA MUSTARO were invaluable aids in just about everything. Both pos- sessed that remarkable, and often too rare quality of 100070 reliability. MR. FLOOD has exhibited an unusual sense of humor throughout. His humor was quite welcome, espe- cially when we needed a release of tensions. Thanks for the many hours of overtime . To you all, I hope that I have not asked you to compromise too much and that in the end it all really was worthwhile . Sorry if I overdid my anti-white page fanaticism. Finally both my deepest apologies and thanks are extended to one very special someone who seemed to fall by the wayside because of the excessive demands of this production. Both you and Wisanda taught me the difficult lesson that life is not just getting from here to there - but is also understanding and appreciat- ing the road which connects these two destinations. fj:7,,,,.g, .1-:CfUC,.e,L EDITOR 7 Ls 5.
