Goes to College” “Winner and Runners-Up in Ridiculous Facial Expression Contest” A LONG time ago” Mr. John D. Foster or J.D. as he is known to many of us, will have been working at B-K-W for 20 years this spring. Mr. Foster has taught a wide variety of subjects, including Biology, Chemistry, Speech, Physics, Drama, and many others. He has also participated in many extra-curricular activities, ranging from musicals to teaching C.P.R. He is remembered by most of his students through his methods of teaching. His clever use of puns and stories make it easier for students to remember facts. He is not only one of our teachers, but our friend as well. We could always come to him with problems and ask him for advice. We proudly dedicate Memoir ’85 to you, Mr. Foster, in appreciation for being our teacher and our friend. THANK YOU, MR. FOSTER GOOD LUCK SENIORS B“A ADMINISTRATION AND SECRETARIES When a student attends school, it is with the prime purpose of grow ing and becoming the person he or she is capable of becoming. At B-K-W. it is my hope that students will be given many opportunities to grow and become mature, responsible young adults. This can only happen when an environment is such that students feel good about what they're doing and in turn grow to feel good about themselves and others In the years ahead. I would like to see B-K-W develop an environment where students truly understand and grow to appreciate the value of a good education. Through active participation of staff and students alike. I feel such an environment will become a reality. Every attempt will be made to make each student's education one which will be a benefit in the years ahead. This will be accomplished by an overall assessment of program, new causes, varied options, and continued emphasis on seeing that students lake on more responsibilitcs. both academically and socially. The time is right to grow, and a concentrated effort on the part of everyone will make growth and change possible. When looking to the future for our school district, I see a vision of a district working together with the community we serve to accomplish certain goals. First, we arc attempting to raise our students expectations for themselves. We want our students to stretch their imaginations, to expand their horizons, to become all they are capable of becoming. Second, we want our school to continue to strive for academic excellence. B-K-W is an exciting place to be, because it is a “district on the move.” We have a vision of a new future and we intend to make that vision a reality. The Board of Education is the “policy making body of the school district. It is entrusted with the legal responsibility of running the school district. In addition to setting policy, the Board hires administrators to run the district on a daily basis and hires all other staff of the district. The Board is composed of five members elected for five year terms of office. It is an unpaid position that demands a lot of voluntary time on the part of its members. The board is dedicated to operating the district at a high level of excellence to build a strong educational future at B-K-W. John was a big part of our past, and we all shared common school experiences. John was different, not only because of his handicap, but because he showed the courage to forge ahead even though he knew the odds were against him. John will be on stage with us at graduation, perhaps not physically, but in our hearts and memories. 47 Every year the seniors get together in committees and plan a senior carnival. They transform the bleak and barren black asphalt of the parking lot into a bustling, and noisy place. All of a sudden food stands pop up, rides come to life, and students of all ages are buying tickets for the various activities. Many parents and people from the community partake in this event and their support is always greatly appreciated. Every year the carnival gets bigger and better! The Black Comedy by Peter Shaffer creates the illusion that the actors are performing in a power outage. The British play is the story of Brindsley Miller, a young sculptor and his fiance Carol Melkett. The couple attempt to impress Carol’s “monster father”. They arrange an evening for Colonel Melkett, with a great art critic named George Bamberger. Just when all was ready and Brindsley and his fiance were nervously awaiting their guests, a fuse blows. Bellylaughs ensue as the carefully planned evening erupts in a whirl of mistaken identities and unexpected arrivials laced with hilarious stunts. The cast included Bill White as Brindsley, Teresa Teachout as Carol, Shari Van Hoesen as Miss Furni-val, the tee-totaler neighbor, Nathaniel Foster as Colonel Melkett, Dan Geer as Harold Gorringe, Andy Van Etten as Schuppanzigh, the German electrician with an eye for art, Sandra Ogsbury as Clea, a not-so-old flame, and Michael Frisbee as George Bamberger. A highlight of the performance was the finale, when Clown Red (Kupcrbergi enlisted the aid of Clown Jim (Porter) and a new star was definitely born on the stage of BKW! Mr . D. Contribute To Computer Book By STEVE GABBY Mrs Dolgowich has written a chapter of a book published recently by World Book The book, a collection of articles by many teachers, is called Using Computers in the Classroom An Idea Resource for Teachers Mrs Dolgowich s chapter deals with a colony of single celled organisms which have certain rules governing their reproduction A computer program projects future generations in order to test hypotheses and to find possible patterns in the reproduction of the organisms Christmas Wish 1984 at B-K-W Elementary was exciting, as well as rewarding. Not only was SI400.00 raised for the WGY Christmas Wish, but the spirit and enthusiasm of children, staff, and community was raised also. Many community members sent donations to WGY through our school. The maintenance staff saved bottles for months and donated the return money for our Christmas Wish drive. Michael Latham, with the help of his sixth grade teacher. Mr. McLaughlin, sponsored a bake sale. The main event, the craft bazaar, was organized by the Christmas Wish coordinator, second grade teacher, Mrs. Parker. Most classes in the elementary school worked for weeks making craft items to be sold at the bazaar. Many community members sent in things they had made for the bazaar. On the bazaar day the students came in with their Christmas lists in one hand and lots of change in their other. They went away with many gifts and many smiles. Mrs. Parker says the Christman Wish is as much for our students’ pleasure as it is for the sick children who receive the benefit from these funds. The names of students with a high academic average are given to the teachers, who are asked to rate them on these qualifications. Students who are rated favorably are then inducted in a ceremony held in the Spring. The names of the new members are kept secret. At the ceremony the new members are picked out of the audience by current members and led to the stage. They receive the traditional candle and carnation, and then recite the oath together. STUDENT COUNCIL First Frolic Friday Held Student Government Is Busy, Busy, Busy By SANDY OGSBURY The Student Government has been busy with events at B-K-W. Frolic Friday was a successful event The administration would like to see this recreational evening held once a month The Student Council is also trying to cut down on the smoking in school and during school activities, such as dances and basketball games During Frolic Friday we advertised there would be no smoking and the Student Government representatives enforced the policy There were no smokers that night A food drive was held for the Christmas Holidays. Students were asked to bring in canned goods to their homerooms These will be distributed to needy families The student government officers have also been busy gathering information on starting a S A I).D. (Students Against Drunk Drivers) Chapter at Berne Sign of the Times: Ski Trip Cancelled Can You Name Your Representative? by SANDY OGSBURY The Student Government held their first Frolic Friday on November 30th The evening began with the movie “Footloose.” The gym was opened all night for the jocks in the community to play basketball and volleyball. There was also dancing in the cafeteria provided by the DJ club. A main attraction at 9:15 was the “break dancers.” They performed for 15 minutes. The night closed with a second movie. “Poltergeist.” The student government had refreshments available which consisted of soda, candy, chips, and pizza for a small fee Frolic Friday was an event that offered the students an evening of fun and relaxation without going off the mountain The evening was financed by a donation of $2 00 and over 100 students thought it was worth every penny Because of Snow? By STEVE GARRY The Berne-Knox Ski Club is enjoying another exciting year of night skiing at Deer Hun Ski Center They are also planning a day trip to Windham Mountain February 20th Due to lack ol snow- the ski club has missed its lirst week of skiing at Deer Hun They also missed a week because of the Midterm exam schedule Then, the next trip was also cancelled because of bad roads. II everything goes well from now on the ski club will be skiing until the end ol February Missed trips will be made up The ski club has 38 members, which surpasses the 31 members of a year ago The number of students that go from week to week usually varies because of other students who go only once The lirst two trips went very well. Mr Speck has been one of the chaperones on both trips along with Mrs Stroh and Mrs. Danton Mr Speck has been the ski club s advisor for the last two years YEARBOOK Since we are a small school, many activities compete for the same students’ time. Usually, those people who participate in extra-curricular activities try to be involved in everything. Their enthusiasm demands praise, but it makes it hard on the club or activity that really needs them. When yearbook first starts, many people come to the meetings as you can see from the pictures, but we end up with a small dedicated group. Yearbook is a very diffferent club that demands a lot from the students who work in it. It is the only club that starts off with a huge debt that must be paid off by the time the book comes out. We work with deadlines, layouts, photography, and advertising. This year many people sold various things to help us get out of debt and to those people we would like to give them our sincere thanks, we could not have done it without you. Rim I C Amslcr. A. We tried to get as many candids as we could to show what the school year was really about. Our school is a great place, we've got a lot going for us at B-K-W. We faced many problems this year as a yearbook staff, blank film, dark pictures, missed deadlines due to explosive reasons, a quitting editor when he was needed the most, but despite all of our obstacles, we did our best. We hope you found this yearbook informative and entertaining. Special thanks go to Kurt Zch and David Burke for their handling of the ads and Tom Wat. Bill Keller for his on-the-spot developing of our last miftutc pictures. Teresa Tcachoul for her hard work as editor. Beth Ballato for her expert typing. The musicals are always entertaining and enjoyable, the marching band is always in tunc and in step, the color guard is always artful and well-timed, and the majorettes arc skilled and cheerful. Mr. Havcrly is the man who brings everything together like machinery, he guides and demonstrates every step of the way. We arc amazed that Mr. Havcrly has the energy to do it all. Everyone plays volleyball, it's a favorite sport at picnics and other outside functions. but to play it according to the rules or to play it well takes a lot of practice and training. Laura: I enjoyed being your seatmate on the bus. I’ll miss you! Friends forever Brenda 119 In Memoriam . . . John Foster Jocular John was the name that John Foster gave himself at a summer workshop and that name was more than appropriate if one wanted to describe him. Mr. Foster always seemed to be in a good mood and you could be sure of hearing his resounding voice at sometime in your day. John Foster was a man with many callings .... a father, a husband, a teacher, a leader, a conciliator, a cook, a manager, an orator, an actor, a singer, and a friend. Those who knew him could certainly add other jobs to the list. Some he did better than others, but no matter what John Foster did, he left his individual mark on it. In Memoriam . . . Chet Ferriero Remember the Good Times” Our buddy has left us so let's stop and think. We were a chain and lost a link. We hung by our lockers before every class. Little did we know life went so fast. Losing him makes us all feel lost. But we always had fun, no matter what the cost. The five of us, the best of friends. We always thought, it would never end. If you were down, he made you feel good. If anyone could make you happy, Chet could!! It wasn’t often you caught him without a smile. With his jokes and attitude, he had style. Why he went so young, we’ll never know. And to think about it, you liked him friend or foe. Why, oh why, did it have to be Chet,?? But he left us with memories we will never forget!!!! Brian Gibbs’85 Goodbye is such a difficult word . . . When someone is loved deeply, and sincerely, it’s only natural to always want them near, to dream about the future together, to share everyday events, to cherish, strengthen and love. And yet, dreams don’t always work out, and goodbyes, no matter how painful, are sometimes necessary. But the love once shared is never forgotten, and once cherished, a person lives forever within our hearts. (Edmund O’Neill) 123 This Page Sponsored By Mr. Schuff. Good Luck Seniors!
