50’S MR. ERNEST ECKER RETIRES . . . 60S Mr. Ernest Ecker joined Berne Knox Westerlo Central School in September of 1955, teaching fifth grade for four years and sixth grade for seven years. He then moved to the junior high and taught seventh grade English, math, social studies and ten week courses in seventh and eighth grade reading, vocabulary and spelling. With the assistance of the Guidance Department, he got a full time reading program started, which included corrective, remedial and speed reading. He also acted as elementary principal for one year and as high school principal for half a year. In addition, he started the consumer economics course, and taught an art class and an eighth grade shop for writing equivalency programs. Some of his other contributions to BKW are the introductions of cross country and track, and coaching soccer for 20 years. Mr. Ecker’s main aim in education has been to “bring out the best in all”. Berne Knox Westerlo School has benefitted greatly from Mr. Ecker through his profe-sional and personal efforts. We will miss him, but best wishes go with him in his future endeavors.
