Close Your Eyes And Think Of Me And Soon I Will Be There To Brighten Up Even Your Darkest Night. You Just Call Out My Name And You Know Where Ever I Am I’ll Come Runnin’ To See You Again. Winter, Spring, Summer, Or Fall All You Have To Do Is Call And I’ll Be There—, Yes, I Will. You’ve Got A Friend . . . 0 If the sky above you grows dark and full of clouds, and that old North wind begins to blow . . . Keep your head together and call my name out loud, soon, you’ll hear me knockin’ at our door. Now, ain’t it good to know . . . YOU’VE GOT A FRIEND! Mrs. Nichole Ambrosio has been teaching here six years. She teaches the eighth, tenth, and eleventh grade classes. She has helped with special projects such as teaching crafts and helping Mrs. Danton teach language to students after school. Mrs. A., as she is fondly called, has been this year's senior class advisor since ninth grade. She is always there to help and organize with a cheerful smile. She is our yearbook advisor and unknown to her we decided to dedicate this yearbook to her. Working with her on the yearbook we have found out what a hard worker and dedicated person she is. whose hope and inspiration never fails us when we need it most. She always supports us and pulls us through the rough spots. We'd like to thank her for the spirit she puts into everything she does. Knowing her for so long, we have found out what a devoted wife (even though her husband. Tom. had to learn how to cook these past few years), and daughter she is. Anyone can see how much she loves her parents and husband and the pride which they have for her. We'd like to wish Mrs. A. all the luck and happiness in the world in her future and with her new baby. Mrs. A. has been a lot of things to a lot of people, but we feel that besides being just a great teacher and advisor, she is also a great friend. She is always there if ever she is needed with a smile and laugh or even a shoulder to cry on. So we would like to dedicate Memoir '83 to Mrs. Nicole Ambrosio—Thank you for being a friend. 9 ADMINISTRATION Mr. Henry Brezinski. district superintendent, is retiring this year. He has been in an administrative position here at B-K-W since 1967. He made the transition from high school principal to superintendent at a month's notice in 1970. and he has an outstanding record for being in such a position for that long a period of time. We. the staff and students, would like to wish Mr. B.”, as he is affectionately called, and his wife, the best of everything. May I take this time to thank all the people of the B-K-W district for the opportunity I have had to work with you. Many decisions have had to be made, and not everyone will agree that the right decision was always made. But in the main. I believe the school system has been viable and will continue to serve the students, parents and community very well. Mr. Perry Kane Mr. Michael Singleton Mr. Conners, our elementary school principal, is a fatherly figure to all students here. The Seniors want to thank him for his help with their carnival. Here we see Mr. Kane, who has been kept very busy these days with budgets. He has truly toiled with juggling the numbers around to meet voter satisfaction. We all hope that he will have an easier year next year, but he certainly earned his keep this yearl A picture is worth a thousand words, and the one above shows how much there is to do and how little time there is to do it. when you're principal. Mr. Singleton has proven to all that when there is something to be done, he’s the man to do it. Mr. Ronald Conner GUIDANCE Mr. Gainor is the high-school guidance counselor. He is very creative in guiding our youth in finding future careers. He also works very closely with our Armed Forces, since we have a rather good percentage of each year’s senior class enlisting. Mr. Hurley is the relatively new junior-high counselor, who has proven himself time and again to be compassionate, strict, knowledgeable, and extremely hard working. He really know what he’s doing. I thi what I'm majoring in (or college?” |BOARD The Board of Education really worked overtime this year with the many budget votes. We, the staff, would like to thank them for investing so much of their time and for caring so much about us. We truly appreciate the fact that they are always there for us whenever problems arise. (Left to right) T. Hayden. G. Cross. R. Drake. J. Besha. A. Lendrum (sitting). Mrs Diane Saddlemire . . . We have done so much with so little, for so long, that we are now qualified to do anything with nothing! SECRETARIES Mrs. Lillian Crawford There can never really be a job description for a secretary because they literally do EVERYTHING. They always answer the phone or your questions with a cheery voice and never seem to tire of the ceaseless work. Mrs. Crawford sits behind voluminous mounds of ledger books and tries to decipher all the accounts. It amazes us how she can keep her sweet demeanor when students forget to give her all the money they were supposed to. Mrs. Saddlemire answers the phone, mimeographs. answers the phone, helps teachers, answers the phone ____While. Mrs. Dow does so many different tasks we can't list them all. Mrs. Martin has been busy (see insert) 12 Mrs. Carol Dow Mrs. Denise Marlin and Amanda Mr«. Marie McManama Mr . Joan Bentley We decided to show you how EMPTY the offices look without the people that keep them running. Mrs. McManama and Mrs. Bentley manage to keep up with the hectic pace and the never ending questions that come their way. They are two very special ladies and we love them. Mrs. Ann Cole Mrs. Cole is the most popular person in the mornings-EVERYONE rushes to get their correspondence to her! She does a fantastic job on the absentees and tries to brighten up our days with witty sayings, cute drawings, and clever messages. 13 Pictured to the right are the high-school chefs who serve us daily with a smile. The school lunch program is self-supporting, which is a credit to the people who work so hard to give us balanced meals. Above, is the ever popular lunch for Friday, which can be seen, every now and then, making an appearance on other days of the week as wellll Mrs. Stevens and Mrs. Willsie. c-flA ’ fytivVlAs f 14 (Standing) Left to right: D. And with old woes new wail my dear times’ waste: Then can I drown an eye, unus’d to flow. For precious friends hid in death’s dateless night. And weep afresh love’s long-since cancell’d woe, t And moan the expense of many a vanish'd sight. Then can I grieve at grievances foregone. And heavily from woe to woe tell o’er The sad account of fore- bemoaned moan. Which I new pay as if not paid before. But if the while I think on thee, dear friend. All losses are restor’d, and sorrows end. Shakespeare ENGLISH English is a very diverse subject-from reading Shakespeare to creating our own T.V. commercials. Not everyone will excel in all activities, but everyone can find at least one topic in the wide spectrum that they can enjoy and triumph over. It is the job of the English teacher to expose the students to all facets of our language, literature. writing, and means of expressions so that they can communicate effectively and succeed in the lifestyle they choose. Yes. it is obvious.......lam perfect! You want WHAT grade?! Is this Animal Farm or Funny” farm? Mrs. Magiera was our 10th grade English teacher until last year when she took her maternity leave. We managed to capture one of those special moments on film when students go out of their way to bring joy and special wishes of happiness to someone they respected, learned from, joked with, and valued as a friend. Mrs A. lapmski: Literature. Drama. English 9 Mr . N. AmbroriO: English 8 + 10 Mrs. J. Corigliano: English 7 Teachers opposite page: Clockwise from top right Mrs. N. Hayden: English 12, Writing, Speech} Mrs. L. Berquist: English 10, Writing Labs Miss P. Norrix: English II, English 9, PSEN 7 + 8 19 History is being made every day, but few other people realize it. Many of us have fathers or grandfathers that fought in wars that we now read about in textbooks. History has a way of repeating itself and hopefully, we as a society, will learn from past mistakes. Our teachers bring us back in time and help us relive what has gone on before. Social Studies is like a time machine where we study all major events from revolutions to witches' trials. We progress from early man through the birth of our nation to the new rocket age. Mr. H. Wilson: Social Studies 7 + 8 21 STUDIES Gently now I tuck away The treasures of another day. A word, a smile, a moment shared. All telling me that someone cared. A wisp of rainbow wrapped in dew, A bit of birdsong old but new, A crimson flower in a bowl. To lift the spirit, feed the soul. Wendy Smith Class of '83 Ms.Saine is a special friend to most everyone in school. If anyone has a problem or question he or she can always go to her for some very sound advice. Ms. Saine has very many good qualities that endear her to her students. She has a great sense of humor and is always willing to hear a good joke. She is always kind and considerate of others and will try to find ways of making them feel better if they have an off day. Ms. Saine can always be counted on to help in a jam. A few years ago, she showed us what a good sport she could be by having someone throw a pie in her face for a fund raising activity when she was the senior advisor. She is still advising classes, but she hasn’t gotten the meringue out of her hair yet, so she hasn’t done it since. Even though Ms. Saine disects animals in her classes, she really enjoys them. She also loves plants (even though they tend to die on her sometimes), her room is like a greenhouse. All in all Ms. Saine is very special to us and we wanted to take this opportunity to let her know. Mr. D. Dennis: 7th grade Math Mr. J. Porter: 8th grade Math 24 WE ARE TWO CUTE FOR WORDS ... Sometimes it is hard for students to relate to the subjects they are being taught. You hear things like- Knowing the value of X isn’t going to help me! or We don’t get back fractions of money, so why bother with them at all?” A successful teacher makes things relevant. The students in computer learn how to manipulate numbers to their advantages while others take measurements and learn to survey the land in pre-algebra. They come to realize how very important numbers really are. Mrs. S. Dolgowich: Computer. T.A.G. Computers aren’t just for games anymore. . Mr W So ei: Sequential, trigonometry, algebra. A man who love hit jobl Mr . M. Holm calculus, baric math, sequential. No matter how I add up my figures. I always come up short I It is a special type of person that inspires students to pool their assets together and come up with a memorable gift. This is the case with Mr. Sossei’s onc-a-crasi 621X11 classes April Fool’s Day ’82. You can see the look of surprise on his face as the ZING-A-GRAM-MER came into his room unannounced. Since a picture is worth a thousand words, the sequence of photos should say it all. 25 FRENCH Mrs. Danton truly exemplifies friendship. Many students, besides those in her scheduled classes, visit her throughout the day and enjoy sharing their free time with her. NO MORI FILMSTRIPS . . . WE WANT THE REAL THINGIII Mrs. Danton teaches French 1-4 and Spanish 1-4. (It's a good thing we don’t offer another language, or she’d really be busy!) KNEW SV'oula dovie. have SiptJTUSV my home LOOT SPANISH The library is a very unique spot. It is a sanctuary for those who need time to study and think. It becomes a mini- auditorium when chairs and desks are rearranged so that a class can watch a videotaped show or the marvels of the space shuttles' liftoffs and landings. The library also doubles as our audio-visual center, where the equipment is kept until needed, and a mini-lab where our Apple computer is housed. The librarians and Mrs. Dow (bottom center) are there to help us when we need it. They help us sort through the volumes of information open to us and select the particular information we'll need to complete our tasks. The librarians also set up a yearly bookfair which is an ever increasing success. 27 BUSINESS Mrs. H Methe: Typing. Shorthand Mr. M. Baggetta: Typing. Business Law. Business Math Mrs. M. Drake: Record Keeping. Office Practice. Bookkeeping The business department prepares many students for the real” world. Many graduates go on to refine their skills in the field or they acquire jobs and learn more while in training. It is always gratifying to the staff when former students come back to tell them about their success. P.S. . . We, the staff, would like to say that we think Mr. Baggetta is the 8th wonder of the world. 28 the regular cooking and sewing classes, that are the traditional fare, but also expands her students’ horizons with courses in child developent and personal relations. HOME ECONOMICS 29 RESOURCE ROOM Mrs. L. Bunzey Mr. Marcil, aided by Mrs. Bunzey, are the friendly faces that students see when entering the resource room. The room is there for that little extra help that some students need to get them over the hump. READING Mr. E. Ecker The reading program is set up to refine the reading skills that students already possess. The students work individually or in small groups. Mrs. S. Loetterle 30 Mrs. L. Allen DRIVER EDUCATION Mr. J. Foster Mr. Foster and Mrs. Mann split up the health courses between them. Aside from teaching health, Mrs. Mann is also our school nurse. On test days, she’s a very popular person, but she’s a tough cookie because she won’t let anyone be sick unless they’ve completed their assignments. Mr. R. Wells The driver education program is very popular. Students sign up as soon as they turn sixteen. It’s the one course that saves lives . . . students learn to drive defensively while their parents are saved from strokes since they don’t have to teach them. HEALTH INDUSTRIAL ARTS 32 Mr. M. Leonard Industrial Arts courses are very practical programs that teach students how to work with various tools, woods, and metals. The wonderful thing about shop” is that many of the projects you make become cherished gifts. There is a crafts fair every year where what is made in class is displayed for both students and community. Mr. R. Hallenbeck Mrs. Laura Saddlemire brings out the artist in everyone. She explores so many mediums and types of artwork with her students that each student can find his or her niche. Much of the student work can be seen on display at our Arts Festival. Mrs. Patricia Testo is the elementary art teacher. Her students display an amazing amount of talent. It isn’t easy teaching younger students to be creative in various mediums, especially finger paints, but Mrs. Testo brings out the best in everyone who passes through her doors. You may not have to run up and down a long court, but your neck sure feels the strain after an arduous game. There have been many times when there has been standing room only. This phenomenon is due to the fact that we have a good team that puts forth the maximum effort when it is needed, (people also enjoy watching the coaches jump up and down when they yell...) We are always very proud of their records. 98 Row I. (I to r) M. Motschmann. W. Smith. C. Hayes. K. Schoonmaker. Row 1. R. Bernard. M. Filkms. A. Herzog. Row 3. K. Hoagland. N. Van Etten. The attendance at the games could be much better and more support could be given, but those people who do come to see them play get their money’s worth every time. The cheerleaders are instrumental in thinking up and carrying out the various day's antics and unique activities. Aside from all their hard work in this project and in others, we commend them for their group spirit and the way they work together as a squad. Everyone knew John. Even if you never met John, you knew who he was because of one distinctive feature ... his wheelchair. But those of us who did know him and had the honor of calling him friend, never noticed that handicap. John was John ... he laughed with us. told jokes, hated homework, drew cartoons in his notebook instead of taking notes, made rocket noises as he propelled his pen or pencil through the air. ate cafeteria food, and took forever to get his books out of his locker as we all do. Whenever you saw John, you also saw his companion John DiUmar who would push John’s wheelchair around for him and help him with whatever had to be done. Last year John was given an electric wheelchair and became known as the ’Terror of the Hals ’. He would whip around the corridors and just miss people .. . driver ed for him might have helped. The school did its part to make John a more independent person by putting in a ramp on one of the stairways. The ramp is gone now. but it took a while for the students to get used to using the stairway again. John was afflicted with Muscular Dis-trophy and at one time was the poster child for that organization at our local level. John helped out a great deal with the day that we had planned to benefit Muscular Distrophy here at BKW. (see opposite page) John is sorely missed by all who knew him. He contributed a great deal to B-K-W and the students. He gave us his friendship, his help and understanding in relation to his handicap, his joys and sorrows. and most of all himself ... which is more than anyone could have asked and certainly a gift that is irreplaceable. WE DID IT FOR JERRY'S KIDS! Both the elementary school and the high school became involved in the festivities that were planned to benefit Cerebral Palsy. The younger kids had a Rock a thon in order to raise money, while some older students lost face for the worthwhile cause. Mr. Al Wagner was a good sport about a pie in the face . . . that raised a lot of mon-eyl The evening event was a Dance a thon that brought people together for a common purpose. There was also a pie eating contest. sack races, and other activities for which medals were given out. All in all it was a great afternoon and night . . . and hopefully more people from both schools will participate this year. The 8th grade holds a Spell-a thon for Easter Seals. The yearbook staff sponsored roller skating in the high school gym and it was quite a success despite the short notice. Our Answers Please group did an outstanding job I They would have been undefeated if the judge had not made a mistake. We at BKW feel that they are unvanquished and we're very proud of them. (Standing behind Hoagland and Foster is Debbie Martin) The afternoon session was for the elementary kids and the evening was saved for the high school. Some students showed off their expertise while others just managed to stand. 10S BUSINESS CLUB Row I: L. Newcomb, C. Hayes, Santa, J. Buckman Row 2: T. Filkins. J. Heald, Row 3: W. Hempstead, C. They are a lot of hard work, but they are worth the effort. There is a special comraderie that comes out of working together for long hours, laughing when your stomach grumbles because your eating routine has been disrupted, straining to remember your lines and getting help from others, and feeling a sense of accomplishment when it is over. Each musical creates a special family atmosphere. As much as there is a sigh of relief when the production is finally over, there is also a wave of disappointment that the fun of working together for a common goal is also at an end. This year's musical. The Sound of Music , was a complete success and drew the largest crowd recorded. 109 HONOR SOCIETY 1st row (L to R) G. Dow. S. Bryan. J. Buckman. R. Slatcher. D. Martin. L. The play followed the attempts of two guys trying to not get inducted into the Army. Dave Lyons won the award for best supporting actor. SENIOR CARNIVAL Each year the seniors put on a carnival to benefit the senior class and to have fun. There are many games and rides, not to mention food. We would like to take this time to thank Mrs. McMan-ama and Mr. Conners for always volunteering to help with the cooking at these affairs. We, as students, feel very lucky to have the teachers and general staff that we have, because they make our school experience something special. Aside from teaching us what we have to know, and what we should know, they laugh and joke not only with us but with their colleagues. We, the yearbook members, would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff. Whenever we need help or encouragement they are always there to give us any assistance we need. Every student has at least one particular teacher or staff member that they confide in, and without that teacher the little traumas of our daily lives would not work out as well as they do.
