Text from Pages 1 - 144 of the 1982 volume:

Many thanks to Barbara Gesang for all her help. Mrs. Tigner retired last year atter 15 years as the mechanical drawing teacher and 14 years as the yearbook advisor. Mrs. Tigner put into her course the discipline necessary to succeed in all walks of life. Any student who wished to find a challenge had to look no further than room 110. She expected perfection from her students and would accept nothing less. Yet for those who took advantage of it. she was a font of information and technical expertise, from her reminiscences of lo Ming Pei and near hero worhsip of R. Buckminster Fuller to her personal experience in drafting and design. For 15 years our mechanical drawing department was second to none. Although she has no children, she thought of each of her students as one of her own She gave them the attention necessary to develop their full potential and to nurture it into a marketable skill. Even today, her former students, who win awards or are recognized for their excellence in a related field, send her clippings and drop in on her to thank her for all the help she gave them and for her caring Above all, she cared. It is for that devotion and that love that we dedicate this yearbook to Mrs. E. Jayne Tigner. who. with her husband Jim. now enjoys a retirement more hectic than her teaching years. 2 TABLE OF -I CONTENTS photo essay .... 4 personnel .... 8 faculty .... 14 sports .... 39 seniors .... 58 underclassmen .... 90 activities .... 103 ads .... 113 5 SECRETARIES The secretarial staff is the bloodstream of the organization. Without them, no one would be able to find the endless paperwork they file away, respond to the variety of questions they answer, and do the many things that had to be done yesterday . Thank you all for everything you do for us every day . . . Joan Bentley is the force behind the guidance department. She usually hears the problems the students have before they go in to see Mr. Gainor. Joan has been here 9 years and. in that time, has learned to hand out report cards, interim notes, good advice, a shoulder to cry on, and hugs. We love you. Mrs. B . except at the end of the marking period. A day without Marie is like a day without sunshine, and she has been bringing cheer to students and faculty for 22 years One can count the groans of the teachers as they come in and find that she isn't behind her desk. Mrs. MacManama goes by many names: “Marie , high school secretary. “My secretary . according to Mr. Singleton; “Slave-driver . to the students in in-school suspension; and Tinkler of the Ivories , to her piano students. Her expertise at all she does brings to mind the quote . . . “It is easy enough to be pleasant when life rolls along like a song, but the man worthwhile is the man who can smile when everything goes dead wrong. PERSON D Martm- I've had enough of the stuff!” A Cole- I hate mornings!'” P Shultes (standing). D Herzog- just you and me against the world . .” Mr. Singleton, our high school principal, has been with us for three years. He is an avid skiier and extremely adept at initiating new programs at school such as TAG. Singleton Mr Brezinski, who has been our supervising principal for many years, felt the need to get back into the classroom. He was a history teacher before his rise to the top, so he assumed the responsibility of some 8th grade history classes. This goes to prove the theory that Old Social Studies teachers never die, and now they don't even fade away! Mr Kane (above) is our frugal business manager. Even though he is rarely seen by the student populace. his decisions touch our lives on a daily basis. H Brezinski R Conners Mr. Conners has been the everpresent authority figure during our formative years. To carry on where Mr. Conners left off, is Mr. Gainor, our guidance counselor. He leads us through our personal and academic crises, and is always more than willing to share his personal experiences with us. 10 M Gainor Mr. Gau, formerly our Jr. High counselor, was a big part of our school for 11 years. He was many things to many people ... a helping hand, a kind word of encouragement, a trusted and respected colleague; a disciplinarian with a shoulder to cry on. In addition, a saviour with wire cutters when lockers got stuck Mr Gau went on to another school and we all wish him the best But, we want him to know that everyone here at B-K-W misses him very much. BOARD AND ADMINISTRATION Many thanks to the School Board for joining in honoring Dr Marge Smith for her twenty-five years of service to the community. It was a memorable evening for Marge and Harry. The fact that so many diverse groups in the community pitched in to make it so is testimony of the depth of the community's appreciation of her good work. R. Gladieux Board of Education meetings are held the first and third Monday of every month and are open to the public. Many times, however. it is not enough for them to meet twice a month, but more frequently when the need arises. Our board is a very dedicated group, and takes, at all times, an active part in the interests of students, parents, and faculty alike COOKS, CUSTODIANS, BUS DRIVERS V Germani, N Neumann, E. Lockwood, D Michaels, R. Morey. The bus drivers are an essential part of our school. They successfully maneuver the buses along the treacherous roads and deliver us safely to our destination. Another important asset to our school is the custodial staff. Even after school, they are hard at work, cleaning and repairing the facilities. Bus Drivers: Top Row: C. Jones. I. Adams, N. O'Pezio, A. She enjoyed writing poetry and was active in the Lutheran Church. She will be missed. M Hoagland 17 Through the many personalities of our science department, students are helped to find the answers to their questions. Ms. Saine, chairperson of the science department, teaches rigorous classes in IPS and Biology. Difficult as they are. Ms. Saine makes them interesting for students who are exploring the mysteries of physical science for the first time. It is said that if a student passes Ms. Saine's course, they'll be ready for anything. Mr. Wagner, who teaches chemistry and physics, harnesses the student's inner curiosity about the subjects and helps the student learn at his or her own speed in a less formal atmosphere. Mr. Foster, our eloquent science teacher, helps students to visualize whatever aspect of science he happens to be teaching. The students know that Mr. Foster always can be counted on for an interesting anecdote At the junior high level, Mr. Howland and Mrs. Deems prepare our budding science scholars for the rigors of their discipline. Mr. Howland takes 7th graders through the miracles of animal and plant life, while Mrs. Deems goes over many characteristics of our own changing world. ii Chairperson .-Mfl’-H 1 ■ yy y , ,’.'• ’• t T YTT T BR35 J Howland J Foster MATH J. Porter Mr Dennis stimulates the 7th grade mathematicians with new concepts. He. in turn, is challenged by our computers and can be found engrossed in a computer game with Mr Porter, our Space Invaders Champion, who is often quoted as saying. My mission in life is to save all mankind. Mr. Porter, our 8th grade math teacher, takes over where Mr. Dennis leaves off. Mrs. Dolgowich, chairman of the department, was instrumental in developing our new sequential math program Along with Mrs. D came our computers, and because of her expertise wisdom and ”fun-to-be-with personality, our computer program has grown into something extraordinary. Mr. Sossei delivers his lessons mostly through lectures. He enjoys giving out perplexing problems and helping his students to work them out on their own. He teaches a wide range of classes—from foundation courses to trigonometry and Math 12. The newest addition to the math department is Mrs. Holm. She puts her basic math and geometry classes through the paces , but she does so with a charming personality and a warm smile. We hope that Mrs. Holm will enjoy working with our staff and students and be around for a long while. rift B B Sossei Mathematics isn't pretty M Holm Mrs. Ambrosio is our sprightly young English teacher for the 8th and 11th grades. She delivers her lessons with a wonderfully humorous pitch.but gets her point across with absolute clarity. Mrs. Lapinski has a structured and serious, yet enthusiastic attitude toward all facets of English. Her 9th grade students leave her class with more appreciation for the subject. In addition to this, she teaches a literature and drama course to our 11th graders where they learn to understand more deeply this area of the fine arts. Mrs. Hayden is the head honcho of the English department, who has been at our school for several years Despite this fact, she still possesses an innovative and fresh approach to her students. Mrs. Corigliano gives her 7th grade English students the foundation needed for a high school career. One thing is certain: No student leaves her class without knowing more than when they came in. Mrs. Magiera who primarily teaches the 10th grade is extremely industrious. She puts a lot of time in the presentation of her lessons. Everyone knows when Mrs Magiera has heard a good anecdote because her resounding laugh can be heard throughout the halls. Ms. Norrix is an outgoing person who is replacing Mrs. Berquist who is away on maternity leave The students can really relate to her, and we are all happy to have had the chance to know her. A Lapmski LANGUAGE N Hayden Mrs. Danton, through her effervescent personality, brings our foreign language department to life Sherri Danton is a versatile and talented French and Spanish teacher who enjoys working with kids. She goes out of her way to find field trips which will be culturally enriching for her students, and she has been known to cater dinners at home which feature either French or Spanish cuisine. H Wilson Mr Wilson intrigues our 7th graders with world history which graduates into 8th grade American history. This year 8th grade Social Studies is taught by Mr Ecker. Mr Wilson, Mr Eaton, and Mr. Brezinski (not shown). Also new to the history department is Mr Troy who instructs one class of 11th hrade history. W Eaton It can be said that Mr Foley has the most unique curriculum going His Human Relations people are always asking the strangest questions of faculty and students, and measuring off the craziest things! Being the other half of the Amerlish team, he has been known to do a ram dance in his backyard in order to prevent the next day s class from going on a field trip to the abandoned dumps. Mr Eaton teaches Afro-Asian studies and Current Events this year Aside from his teaching, he has been involved with the 1 crosscountry team at our school for many years. Mr Kimball, however theatrical, imbeds in the minds of his students the many important ramifications of European history. His room is filled with all sorts of objects from the past, and enable him to become anyone from a Viking to a Super Bishop!! 2S Mrs Methe helping one of her many students You're handing in an assignment on time-5? M Drake BUSINESS M Baggetta Mrs. Methe is always willing to help students get on their feet in the amazing world of the office.'' In the classroom, she creates a stimulating atmosphere by making up bulletin boards showing the competitiveness of typing. Other than teaching, she is involved with business club along with Mrs. Drake Mrs. Drake is back this year after a maternity leave While she was gone over the year, besides enjoying her new baby— she was hard at work helping to write up a new curriculum to improve the effectiveness of our business courses Mr Baggetta with his fun-loving attitude makes his business courses almost painless After his morning coffee with Mrs. Bunzey and friends, he is capable of seemingly impossible feats- such as teaching Business Arithmetic to cranky kids first period. 28 A haven for many students. the library is a well-oiled machine, finely tuned by Mrs. Francis Put-z'9 She wears many hats in her job as librarian, and, assisted by Mrs Dow, manages to keep our library going strong each year. Mrs Brazil is our elementary librarian. Both she and Mrs. Putzig order new books, set up book fairs, put the libraries in order, and are active members in the school's Talented and Gifted program. We want to take this time to thank Mrs. Bunzey for always helping the extracurricular activities— from use of her washer and dryer to her ovens. She and Ms. Saine are sophomore advisors. What is this stuff?” my goodness this thing's got my arm!'' And this piece goes Oh! Hi there ......but, a man who works with his hands, mind, and heart is an artist. M Leonard- Mmmmm . It could be done A man who works with his hands is a laborer...a man who works with his hands and mind is a craftsman Mr Hollenbeck faces another marking period 31 Our art teacher, Mrs. Saddlemire. teaches many art forms, such as painting, weaving, clay sculpture, and leather crafts. She adorns our hallways at holiday time with appropriate decorations and makes Berne-Knox-Westerlo a brighter place in which to learn. Art is not so much taught as it is nurtured. Many do not possess the ability to be good artists, but those who do can count on Mrs. Saddlemire to assist and 'nurture'. 32 Mrs. Mann, our school nurse, has won many prestigious awards in the field of health services. Aside from her in-school duties, she aids the community on the Ambulance Alert Squad for the Berne Fire Department. Mrs Mann always has time to Nsten to the students and counsel them She often gives them that special hug that gets them through the day. Both Mrs Mann and Mr Foster teach health MECHANICAL DRAWING Mr Foster shows his classes what happens when you have iron-poor blood HEALTH Mr Weis (below) didn't even panic!! Both Mr. Wells and Mr. Chandler teach Driver Ed. These men are truly our unsung—heroes of the faculty. How many of you out there would take students, who didn't even know where the brake is. out on the road for the first time? Mechanical Drawing is an extremely exacting and precise course. There is never any room for errors, so students learn patience and the values of scratch copies and final products. Careers- architecture, engineering, drafting, to mention a few- are begun in a mechanical drawing sequence We are happy to have Mr. Chandler with us to guide us through our trying times. 33 B.O.C.E.S. The students who attend B.O.C.E.S. enjoy an education which prepares them for the professional world. Classes include food preparations, office operations, agricultural mechanics, garage mechanics, data processing, cosmetology, building maintenance. building trades, and home and institutions (a health and service course). I feel pretty, oh, so pretty '1 wouldn't do this for just anyone This is heaven! 34 35 “It's a what?! Little recognized, is the hard work of our concert bands. Though lost copies of music and a little confusion sometimes hinders them, they always come shining through in their performances. They do put in a lot of effort so it is really disappointing for them when not all the seats in the auditorium are filled. BAND Smiles everyone Smiles!! Mr. Haverly, aside from heading the marching band, is the director of this year's school musical, Bye-Bye Birdie. Mr. Smith, who has been with B-K-W in the elementary and junior high music classes, is doing an especially fine job this year as our junior high band director. I thought you bought the filmT' 40 41 SOFTBALL The Girls' Varsity Softball team is an everpresent threat in the Schoharie County League. The offensive attack for the Bulldogs of '81 was led by the hard hitting of Melody Guilzon, Jill Lendrum, Donna Myers, and Caroline Blyth. Meanwhile, the defense was led by strong pitching from Mel Guilzon and Donna Myers, among others. The backbone of the infield was often comprised of Jill Lendrum, Donna Myers, Caroline Blyth, and Sue Van Etten. The lack of seniors on last year's team means that there will be a strong roster for '82. Top Row: Cassie Lockrow. Tammy Tubbs. Beth Cooke, Wendy Smith Middle Row Kim Hoagland. Melody Guilzon. Although it was slow starting also, the J.V. demonstrated a great deal of skill and potential, and good things should happen next season. Guess I don't know my own strength! 4 This year's Cross Country team may be the best the school has ever sported. With an overall record of 7 and 2. they won all three Schoharie County League meets as well as the Second Galway Invitational The team also tied for second place in our area Class D Sectionals. Glenn Dow. who has been a mainstay of the team for four years, once again made an impressive showing at the State Meet in Malone by placing 22nd. Glenn is representative of the personal determination and perserverance that each member of the team demonstrates. It takes a tremendous amount of self-discipline to go out into the rain and snow and put the maximum effort into every inch of the race. In the end, it is not how you finish or where you finish, but that you finish. We are jusf happy that Glenn finishes before anyone else does. CROSS COUNTRY Row 1: G Sherwin. M. Stevens. The test lets the students know what their forte is and helps them select jobs in the military. 50 out of 200 juniors and seniors take the exam and. on an annual basis, we have 10 to 15 of our students join some branch of the military. Annually Mrs. Putzig arranges to have a book fair in the library. She has a knack for choosing books that interest all the students and the faculty. The fair runs a week and classes are permitted to browse and explore. All proceeds go to the library fund, and pay for more books for us to enjoy. BOOK FAIR APPRENTICE WORKSHOP Mrs Cindy Porker has been instrumental in initiating the apprentice workshops at B-K-W for elementary school students The program gives them the opportunity to explore different fields- ceramics, sewing, cooking, mocrame. French, typing (pictured), and others High school and elementary teachers, as well as people from the community, have contributed their time to this worthwhile cause How would it feel to be blind? or deaf? Well, this year some students found out Mr Foster's Handicap Awareness Program was a big success with the students who participated in it. It taught coping with and on understanding for other people's problems, such as cooking while blindfolded (pictured). SENIOR CARNIVAL Our Senior Carnival this year was a resounding success The annual event, held to raise money for the senior class, was enjoyed by a great number of students and their parents There were games of skill and chance, rides, food, drink, and crafts for sale One of the most popular booths was the Space Invaders computer game booth, which raised almost a hundred dollars alone RAIMAR Ramar Vogel is our foreign exchange student from Chile He is happy to be here and everyone enjoyed getting to know him, especially Danny Sherman who is his host Raimar wants to be a diplomat, and he considers this his first mission of goodwill Rai-mar. we will miss you. The girls have spent hours looking for dresses, while the boys have either purchased their first suit or undergone their first tuxedo fitting. Parents have obtained new rolls of film for pictures of their son's or daughter's first big night out. At the prom itself, everybody is amazed at how everyone else looks, and nothing but compliments are passed around. A magical evening is at hand. The Best of Times , the junior prom's theme, was true then and has carried through to this year's senior year. Hopefully, for the class of '82, it will always be the best of times 88 89 UNDERCL ( ( S. Andres C. Basdekis L. Belter W Blyth R. Boucher S. Bryan B Buchardt J. Buck man C Busch B. Crosby K. No one knows the emotions that capture men's hearts. No one knows the reasons why men pursue certain goals and avoid others. We can only hope that tranquility will be theirs. Honor Society people can even read upside down! We do good in Englisn dnd we do good in sports .” The National Honor Society members are chosen by secret ballot by the school's staff and faculty. They are chosen for leadership, service, and academics. It is considered a great honor to be chosen as a member of this club. The induction assembly is held during the school day when all students and staff can participate. The students that will be summoned to the stage have no foreknowledge of the event, only their parents have been called beforehand and sworn to secrecy. It is a very special assembly because it is the one assembly in the year honoring those students who have excelled in all they do. It is a time when recognition is given to the student who works hard to achieve. Most of the participants of the Teacher's Assistant Program are in the Honor Society and have proven themselves. We are very proud of our school's chapter of the National Honor Society, and we hope that more students will strive to be a part of its membership. 104 The newspaper staff has at the masthead Mrs. Hayden and Miss Norrix. The newspaper itself has been started again after being dormant for a number of years. The December issue was a well written one and contained good news articles, witty columns and puzzles, and helpful hints. The newspaper is a living history of our school to which all students can contribute. Row 1: T. Tice, S. Lutz, T. Crawford. M. Chrysler; Row 2: N. Stevens, B. Cooke. B Bushnell. J Chauvot. K Fancher. We have our own standards for beauty Dapper Dan Kimball and his sidekick Peppy- Teaching is serious business 107 . . and I would be Mrs Peterson. Musicals at B-K-W are long awaited affairs in which the students love to participate. It is a night on the stage, a chance to live, laugh, and become closer to those around you. The cast and crew is your new found family with which you share the laughs, the tears, the successes, and the failures. Your nerves are at a peak, but then the curtains open, and miraculously the nervousness goes away. You become involved with the part that you have in the whole scheme of things, then suddenly your final bow is taken, and the auditorium goes dark. You clean up the stage, take off the make-up. and try to return to a normal life without rehearsals. Memories of the good times, good friends, and good laughs linger, and you are better for your hard work because you've learned a lot about people and even more about yourself. “It won't last, not at all 108 YEARBOOK In the beginning. . . One day after school Mrs. A. sat at her desk and called out to a roomful of perplexed students. Does anyone know what they're doing? All of a sudden, a resounding laugh from outside in the hall filled the air, and in walked Mrs. Magiera, who proceeded to show us what was what. Thanks Mrs. M. and this is one of our good days! Ever since that fateful day, we've managed to make our first deadline by 9 minutes, and things have only been going up from there. (How could they get worse?) “No, Cheryl, the cover goes on the front. You're what?'' 110 Many people have worked on the yearbook staff this year and I thank them all. But, there has been a core of hardworking students who have been at almost every meeting, and I thank them from my heart. - Mrs. A. Occasionally, we are organized It's good.
