Our vision of the school experience is one of integration. The sound of voices in the hall, friendship, sports, activities, studies, bus rides ■ all combine to enrich the life which is Berne-Knox Westerlo Central School. But our school is not a separate life, it is a composite of many days, many lives. This Board is dedicated to providing a curriculum so that students are constructive members of American society. Board Of Education SENIORS We, the Class of ’81, approach our commencement with thoughts of you, Kyle. We think of you a lot; during a homeroom discussion, or when talking over good times and yesterday's classes. You were the fun kid, the good friend, the best. And more than that, you were nice to everyone. You are part of this yearbook, our last days of school, our fond memories. We grew up with you for thirteen years, we will not forget you as we grow through life. This book is for you. In memory of you SUPER SENIORS HISTORY We began rather innocently selling carrots during break time in 8th grade because selling candy was illegal. We didn't make much money then, but we did develop some carrot peeling talent for future smorgs. From that beginning, we steadily improved the projects we undertook, losing some of our innocence, but maintaining most of our spirit. That spirit helped us to set up round-robin baseball games when we were freshmen; to win the one-act play contest when we were sophomores; and encouraged most of us to attempt roller skating when we were juniors. Some never got out of the skating rink game-room but most of us made it gracefully around the rink at least once. Some on two feet, some on one foot, some on . . . Well, we did eventually become graceful. Our prom, at the Turf Inn provided a special magic which transformed us for a little while into the full-fledged adults we would soon become. We're seniors now. Our recent carnival, dance, and smorg have been so well organized, hardly anyone remembers that as freshmen, we used a stick to stir the lemonade for our field day. We’ve accomplished much since then and soon we graduate. We've learned to share the work, the fun, the set-backs, and the credit. All of this we've learned together, and this is the way we will remember our high school years . . . together. RECLINING: Scott Greene. It is a sad year of looking back, and a happy year of gazing forward. According to the mentors, The most valuable philosophy a teacher can have is to love one’s work and to care deeply about the people you're teaching. If you do, all else will fall into place. A real Thanksgiving has become a sixth grade tradition. 47 Standing : Earnest Ecker. Reading; David Troy. Special Ed.. Connecticut State; Katheryn Vitelli. Speech; Diane Henningson. These services provide more individualized attention, whether a student is prepping for the SAT.’s or moving at a different pace. As Mr. Troy has said, “Learning should be fun and everlasting. The authoress also feels that parents are a child’s first and most important teachers. Interests include Mr. Englebardt’s competing in marathons, while Mrs. Sisson enjoys what she excells in, reading. The jungle bars take the chill from a cool day. “What's going on? Mrs. Tigner had an interesting reply. “The Board of Education asked me to take the classes for a couple of weeks until they could get a permanent teacher. —That was 24 years ago. Mr. Leonard's thought caught the heart of an artist: The man who works with his hands is a laborer. 52 The man who works with his hands and his brain is a craftsman. The man who works with his hands, his brains, and his heart is an artist. Anyway you look, it's a long haul. . . 7 ’ 7 Don t bother us-we re dreaming. KINDERGARTEN: the educational chapter in a child’s life which ends on a warm June evening thirteen years later. As students, our primary teachers all enjoyed social studies. Miss Lotho, from the Philippines, is our most exotic faculty member. Right from the start, Mrs. Condon holds it important to teach self worth. 53 ELizabeth Earle, Vincent Smith, Michael Richmond, Mitchel Haverly, Potsdam. MUSIC Musical groups provide opportunities for learning, performance, and companionship. From a lead role in the musical, to composing, through acceptance in the Empire Youth State Orchestra, it all begins with the first triangle lesson in elementary school. As Mr. Haverly says, “Excellence is a disease worth catching. Note the way it sounds on the left; looks on the right.
