As a token of our respect and admiration we dedicate the 1960 Memoir to Mr. John G. Favreau. As a teacher in the Berne-Knox commerce department he has been an inspiration to students. Mr. Favreau, the Static advisor, encourages the staff to put their all in its edition. As moderator of National Honor Society he also encourages its members to strive for high goals by practicing the aims of the organization. Since we believe that you, Mr. Favreau, are an excellent example for all students to follow and particularly for us, the class of 1960 inscribes this book to you. Mr. George Northrup, a member of the Board of Education, has retired. As president, for many years, he has contributed much time and energy to the office. Mr. Northrup has accompanied many Senior classes on their New York trip and has been of great service to Berne-Knox. In the name of Berne-Knoxers, past and present, we offer thanks for his devotion. Buses prepare for dismissal. The Berne-Knox Central School has as Its purpose the education and favorable development of the youth of this area. This implies a great responsibility on the part of all of us. As teachers and administrators, we keep abreast of the latest methods of teaching and current information in our field. Besides our regular classes many of us have homerooms in which we inform students of accepted school conduct, give extra aid when asked, and occasionally have informal discussions. We instill abilities in the greatest of all disciplines, that of self-discipline. We strive to develop in each of our students the desire and the ability to progress to his fullest capacity and to accept his responsibility for personal success and for the success of our school. We also have many extracurricular activities; Mrs. Wright chairs Adult Education and Math Club, Mr. Cohen instructs student bowlers, Mr. Favreau advises Honor Society and Static, and Mr. Freda directs Drama Club. Mr. Whitlock guides the Future Teachers Club. Mrs. Yarmchuk and Mr. Boyden supervise 4-H and F.F. A., respectively. We try by our own example to show orderly and purposeful living, which yields great self-satisfaction. SENIORS Many Seniors will be remembered by Berne-Knoxers because of their achievements and talents. We also will not soon forget our fellow classmates. For example Bonnie Hammershaimb displayed leadership as class president for three years, Bill Zona was the Student Council president and Pat Betts was president of Honor Society of 1959-1960. In dramatics, we will remember Bruce Healt, our class president, who starred as Teddy Roosevelt in the senior play, ARSENIC AND OLD LACE, with Bonnie Hammershaimb and Judy Schoenborn as the two old maids. Bruce has also appeared in both winning play contests. We can still recall Rhapsody in Blue played by Pat Sisson and Judy Schoenborn, who have studied piano for several years. They have also appeared with Ken Coffey in the operetta. In music, ten seniors are band members. Doris Caroline has excelled in the field of sports and Barbara Boyden has been a cheerleader for four years. With George Martin as captain, Eddy Nicholson, Mark VonHaugg and Bill Zona help compose the 1959-1960 Varsity Basketball squad. We also have a champion runner in our midst, Eddy Nicholson, who won second place in his division and third In the state cross-country meet. We would not have been as successful without the encouragement of our teachers, advisors, and administrators. The class of 1960 has many pleasant memories of Berne-Knox and will always cherish them. Some programs are excluded but others are continued after time proves their value and necessity. The elementary school offers much to its students. Each grade is divided into two homerooms in which students learn the three R's and fundamentals of music and art. In the fall a student council is chosen. This group sponsors a traffic control committee, sets up conduct rules and helps run social events. At Christmas the entire school produces an operetta for their parents and has a party before the long holiday. During the year young Berne-Knoxers participate in several music events and assemblies with each grade presenting a play or program. Class-planned trips are conducted to various places of educational interest in the area, such as, a visit to Santa Claus, a turkey farm, and Catskill game farm, and a picnic is also scheduled in June to end the school year. Altogether the elementary building hums with activity. GRADE 4 - Left to right: Mrs. Ketcham. Mr. Fuss. GRADE 5 - Left to right: Mrs. Hallen beck, Mrs. Gage. A THLETICS A sportsman is a good loser and a gracious winner: honest rivalry and the acceptance of results is the sportsman 's secret formula. Through physical education classes, we realize sportsmanship is necessary in any contest. In physical education, fundamentals of a sport are taught, and then skill and agility in the game are developed. Instruction in hygiene and first aid is given in health class which lends a practical value to physical knowledge. Lessons in hockey and archery are also given. Berne-Knox girls participate in basketball and volleyball intramurals. Although there is team competition, members of the all-star teams are chosen by their individual display of sportsmanship and ability. These teams play the final exciting games of the season. Berne-Knox boys hold basketball intramurals. In these contests, new techniques are developed and used in league competition. Basketball, volleyball and soccer are included in the interscholastic sports program at Berne-Knox, with baseball, softball, cross-country and track also on the agenda. Beme-Knox also has a bowling league in which students receive instruction and compete with other leagues. These activities are a prerequisite to good health. They relieve tension and develop physical stamina vital for competition in all phases of life. VARSITY SCORES OPPONENT B-K OPP. Activities At Berne-Knox our natural talents are applied and developed with participation in many activities which increase our understanding of teamwork. By experimenting with the variety offered, we discover our likes and dislikes which influence our choice of career. Through our Student Council, student participation in school government is permitted. We become aware of the problems and duties of a government and discover the importance of the individual. The Council also strives for student achievement, which is also encouraged by our chapter of the National Honor Society. Not only scholarship and achievement, but also leadership, character, and service are its aims. Activities in which we display our skills are many. The Static is the result of ingenuity, responsibility, and competence. Individual talent is displayed and developed in our school newspaper. The Future Teachers Club arouses interest in teaching and offers students an opportunity for actual classroom experience. 1 pledge my heart to greater loyalty, my head . . . We learn to apply the essentials of economy and comfortable living as members of the 4-H Club. A brother organization, the Future Farmers of America, centers attention on agriculture. Sound mind and body are vital to all organisms, whether individuals or groups. This is the watchword of the Girls' Athletic Association. Theatrical ability and artistic talent are nourished by our play contests, assemblies, and dramatics clubs. In the spring we develop socially when soft music and lights enhance the Junior Prom. Our school picnic signifies the closing of the year as we pack our baskets with potato chips and hot dogs. Although these activities are separate in function, they are mutually dependent on each other, and together offer fun, fellowship, and knowledge. As sophomores we produced a comedy, Gone About Girls for the annual one-act play contest. This won first prize. In 1959 we won a second one-act play contest with our presentation of a drama, The Valiant. In November 1959 our final stage triumph - Arsenic and Old Lace was presented. The audience really seemed to enjoy this riotous comedy, pictured below. L. SADDLEMIRE - Mr. Gibbs D. GUILZON - Mr. Witherspoon W. LaGRANGE - Lt. Rooney W. ZONA - Officer O'Hara K. Community Fair Mike Polhemus and Linda Nasholds reign over the harvest as King and Queen. Some faculty members admire the flower show which was one feature of the Community Fair. The crowning of the King and Queen is the highlight of the evening. The crowds excitedly await this event. Music has been an essential part of life since earliest times. The latest news was spread by minstrels who traveled from town to town singing ballads, while sailors chanted to the dip of their oars. Today a great industry thrives because of the demand for music. Music plays a vital role in the curriculum at Berne-Knox Central. Music classes are scheduled for Junior High School. A grade choir, junior and senior glee clubs, junior mixed choir and the special mixed choir are the organizations available for interested students. These groups participate in the Christmas program and in the operetta. The glee clubs join other choral groups singing Christmas carols to invalids at the Veteran's Hospital in Albany. This year the Music Department presented a Sunday evening concert. Proceeds helped defray the expenses of the choir's new choir robes. Another high spot of the Berne-Knox musical year is the Spring Festival held at Cobleskill in which the band and choir participate. Another group, the newly-organized Operetta Club, plans the annual musical. Many scripts must be analyzed and a theme chosen for the production before tryouts are held for major parts in the musical. Some of the latest operettas were based on OKLAHOMA. THE KING AND I, MY FAIR LADY, and BRIGADOON. From left to right, FIRST ROW - P. Betts, L. Fitzgerald. R. Feil, C. Walk, C. Shaul, J. Yarm-chuk, L.
