CLASS PROPHECY It was a cold wintry day Ann Whipple was walking down the mam street of Berne Hr Annie' Ann turned to see who was ca lltng her It was Nanette McCormick Why hello, Nan Haven t seen you rn ages You re not krddrng I haven t seen you xn centunes What ve you been doing wrth yourself? Nan asked Oh Im married now and live rn Berne I married that fellow from the next town You know the one Ann replred Nan nodded her head Oh yeah You mean that one Suddenly Ann turned and said You know things are a lot different in Berne since you left You see that store? What d they used to call it? Jack s? Jake s Nan corrected Yes, that s rtl Now 1t's David Greene s Super Wait On Yourself IFeel Lazy Today Market Oh? Nan exclaimed And who omms that beautiful mansion beside rt? What? Drdn t you know? Ann querred That s Katherine Arena s home She took up singing after she graduated and now she s with the Metropolitan Opera Company She s very rrch Mm It looks it Nan replred And whose rs that lrttle old shanty beside rt? Surely it doesn tbe long to one of our classmates? Arm shook her head sadly I m sorry to say but tt does That s where Frances Gerry IIVCS It seems that his wisdom got the best of htm All he does now IS write books and speaks so intellectually that no one dares go near him Nan wiped a tear from her eye Poor Francis Say what ever happened to Eddie Peverlv Eddte? Oh he and B111 Smyth are comedrans on colored phonyvrsion Ann replied Hmm here s the doctor s office Nan remarked She read the plaque by the door C Frederrckson M D So he really became a doctor! Say let s go down to the school, Ann interrupted There are a lot of our classmates there Strll? No silly They work there 0 1 So Nan and Ann walked together dovm the mam street of Berne turned in the drrve walked up the steps and entered the school They went downstairs frrst and met Bob Dearstyne who taught boys Phys Well rt rsn t too surprising that Bob rs teachrng Phys Ed here Nan remarked as they walked away Don t they have any grrl s Phys Ed teacher like they used to? Oh yes Ann replred Norma Gatge rs the grrls teacher but she xsn t here right now She generally tells the girls to go outside and play and not to keep trackrng under her feet all day Where is Joan Sloger? Whatl exclaimed Ann You certarnly haven t been keeping up on the news my dear Joan ts the elected But here we are at the principal s office Guess who the principal rs? Idon t know admntted Nan Mr C Peter Roney, Ann exploded Let s go rnsrde They walked rnsrde and saw Pete leaning back m hrs chair with hrs feet propped upon the desk When he saw them he jumped up qutckly then sat down agarn Oh! you scared me girls he said Come rrght rn Ithought you were someone else Then he recognlzed them and came forward and shook hands Well hello he said If rt 1sn t Anme Whipple and Nan McCormrck What are you doing here? Haven t seen you rn a dog s age Nan sard We re just revrevnng old times and trying to drscover what has happened to all our class mates Drd you know that Gert Drezelo gOI marrred? I know Nan answered quickly he works in a ctrcus It seems that he shrank a lrttle after gradua tron fprobably from reliefj Now he s known as The Shortest Man in the World Say did Ioan Van Wor mer marry Drck as she planned? Defrmtely nodded Ann Now she has a dozen kids Wowl exclaimed Nan and Pete simultaneously Oh I forgot to tell you contrnued Ann Ruth Jones owns the beauty shop across the street The other day she announced a correspondence course called How To Grow Natural Waves So Nan commented she has finally come out with the secret Well Pete I guess rt s about time we were shoving off, Ann said Goodbye Goodbye said Nan, hope we see ou again sometime Nan and Annie walked out of the sc ool and had just started down the road when suddenly Nan S31d Hey you drdn t tell me about Jean or Peggy or Dons Hold on, now Ann laughed Jean started the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Mrschervous Persons Peggy owns the Shultes Swanky Dress Shoppe down the street and designs gorgeous gowns But you can t guess what happened to Dons Tell me pleasel It seems Ann continued that she and Al built a rocket ship and flew to the moon They wanted to see rt right up close Suddenly she turned on Nan, Hey, What s commg off?
