During time of his leadership the school has acquired an Indie rating of First Class Commission grades one to twelve. He has shown remarkable foresight and understanding in hi work with the school and has given outstanding service, firs as a teacher and principal and now for many years as Superintendent. CLASS HISTORY A group of a bit uncertain, but enthusiastic Freshmen entered the whirl of high school life four years ago. We began our social life with a party at the Well’s County State Forest. The officers chosen for the year were Guy Givens, president; Carl Liechty, vice president; Doris Liechty, secretary; and Karen Neuenschwander, treasurer. During our Sophomore year, we reached a milestone in our high school career with the choosing of class rings. We also enjoyed a Scavenger hunt (in spite of the rain) for one of our class parties. Our officers were Carl Liechty, president; Bob Dillc, vice president; Sherrill Felher, secretary; and Rosie Baumgartner, treasurer. To lead us through the increasing activities of our Junior year, we elected Tom Lehman, president; John Spurgeon, vice president: Jim Nussbaum, secretary; and Sheila Price and Bonnie Cook, treasurers. A real highlight of the year was the presentation of our class play, ‘'Big Hearted Herbert.” Not to he forgotten is the fun and satisfaction we derived from helping our bed-ridden classmate, Sheila Price, by having a bake sale and a car wash. The year was climaxed with the entertaining of the Seniors at the Junior-Senior Reception, wtih the theme, “Down Memory Lane.” As seniors, we profited from the capable leadership of Lynn Lehman, president; Bob Dille, vice president; Karen Smitley, secretary, and Lois Steiner, treasurer. We were happy for the Jefferson students who joined us in the fall and contributed much to the class. FREEMAN BURKHALTER I he I raining Choir is open to all high school students. It is, as the name implies, a training organization for the A Cappella Choir. The choir rehearses twice a week, with I)r. Burkhalter as director. TRAINING CHOIR mm The Junior Band and Orchestra are made up largely of students from grades six to nine. They-serve mainly as training groups for membership in the high school organizations. They also participate in concerts presented by the musical organizations. Mr. Kem directs the band and Dr. Burkhalter trains the orchestra. JUNIOR BAND SDIX31HJLV This year the Hears gained permanent possession of the E. I. C. conference trophy by becoming champions for the third successive year. The year’s record stands at 11 wins and no defeats, with two victories over Montpelier at the close of the season clinching the championship. JUNIOR CLASS PLAY “WE SHOOK THE FAMILY TREE” On November 9th and 10th, the Junior Class of BFIIS presented “We Shook ihe Family Tree. a 3-act comedy dramatized by Christian Sergei from the book by Hildcgarde Dolson. It was the story of Hildcgarde Dolson. a 16-year old girl played by Amy Richer, who feels she is destined to be an old maid unless she gets a date for the Prom. She gave a speech meant to impress the boys, but instead made her father appear to be a drunkard. She took exercises to improve her muscles and used beauty cream on her face, but the best she could do for a date was Freddie Shcrmer—who wore knickers and was portrayed by Tom Kirchhofer. Freddie finally rebelled against his mother and stole his own graduation present, sold it. and bought a suit with long pants to wear- to the Prom. SENIOR CLASS PLAY TIIE FAMILY NOBODY WANTED The Seniors, under the direction of Miss Blue, presented the three-act comedy, “The Family Nobody W anted.” based on the book by Helen Grigsby Doss. Mr. and Mrs. Doss, a childless couple, have adopted seven orphan children known as the “unadoptables because of their mixed parentage, which ranges from Mexican-Japanese to Burmese-Koren. These children, a joyous group of teenagers, certainly disprove the statement that “East is East and W est is West and ne'er the twain shall meet. as the% live happily together—as American as blueberry pie. However, when Donny Doss, the oldest son. falls in love with Nan Johnson, the daughter of a rich Texan, trouble arises between the Dosses and Johnsons. Donny’s brothers and sisters, in a touching scene, succeed in reconciling the two families, bringing to a happy ending a worth-while and timely play. The Rifle Club, just formed this year, provides the opportunity to learn the proper use of firearms and to participate in actual shooting competition. Our vegetable judging team went to the state judging contest at the Indiana State Fair, our livestock and forestry judging teams participaed in the district contest held at Columbia City, and we placed second in the district parliamentary procedure contest held at Urbana, Indiana.
