As in preceding years, we had trouble finding lockers and getting to the right classes at the proper time. After the preliminary hardships, we finally began to find our places in the whirl of high school life. Our first taste of this new life was our election of class officers. We chose Alan Eichenberger, president, Ben sprunger, vice president, Charles Fiechter, secretary, and John Kirchhofer, treasurer. In the spring of our first year every- one had a wonderful time at a party at the State Forest. We moved into our sophomore year by electing Ben Sprunger, president, Otto Schug, vice president, Evelyn Pfister, secretary, and Norma lnniger, treasurer. We made our presence very obvious by winning the yelling contest and being the first class to hold the plaque that goes with this title. To show that next year we would be of Junior level we chose our class rings in the spring of 1953. We tried the novel experience for our class party of having a scavenger hunt, which proved to be rather tiring but very interesting. As we entered our third year of high school, we began to feel the responsibility of in' creased activity. Charles Fiechter, Ben Sprunger, Ramona Starffer, and Norma lnniger were elected class officers. The first really big event of our school life was the staging of our junior class play Room for One More. We had our annual spring party in the form of a variety show followed by a box social. We completed our junior year by entertaining the seniors at the traditional Junior-Senior Reception, the theme being Count Every Star. ln the fall of l955 there were mixed emotions as we began to realize that we were nearing the end of our high school days. Of the fifty-seven who originally composed the class of '55, fifty remained, ln order to make the most of our final year we elected the following officers: Charles Fiechter, president, Ben Sprunger, vice president, Theda Heller, secretary, and Norma lnniger, treasurer. ln March we presented our senior class play Papa Was a Preacher. Living up to our reputation of doing things out of the ordinary, we had a Backwards Party as our final class get-together, Finally came the Junior-Senior Reception, the excitement of Senior Week, Baccalaureate, and Commencement. As we are graduating, we do not forget those who have departed-Marvin Graber and Hazel Balsiger. LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT Appeared before me this first day of May, I955, the 54th graduating class of Berne-French High School. They have acknowledged before me, this to be their last will and testament. To the faculty-the wisdom to continue. To the juniors-honor. To the sophomores-integrity. To the freshmen-courage. In previous years it was considered a secondary sport. The enthusiasm for track was shown loy one of the largest turnouts in many years. This tense and stirring drama, which kept the audience's interest from the opening scene until the final curtain, was a portrayal of the murder trial of Karen Andre. S Karen, played by Lucille Liecty, had been accused of murdering her employer, Biorn Faulkner, and the entire play centered around the trial, its introduction of key witnesses, and the conflicts of the two attorneys, Prosecuting Attorney Flint, Dean Hendricks, and Defense Attorney Stevens, Jerry Flueckiger. Other major roles were assumed by Georgia Haecker, Grace Habegger, Rebecca Liechty, Made- Iyn Clauser, Pat Bausermen, Tom Ehrsam, Larry Neuen, Tony Liechty, John Nuss- baum, Myles Eley, Lee Sprunger, Ken Neuenschwander, Mahlon Gehman, and Kenny Reinhard. Minor roles were taken by Nancy Smith, Connie Von Gunten, Ruth Ann Zimmerman, Berdell Lehman, Lynn Sprunger, Sandra Gilliom, and Bill Rumple. One unique feature of the play was the selection, from the audience, of the iury which decided the fate of Karen Andre, and also decided the ending of the play to be used by the players. On both nights the iury found Miss Andre not quilty. This well-written comedy-drama will afford the Juniors some well deserved and fond memories of a full evening of entertainment when they gave The Night of January l6th. PAPA WAS A PREACHERH On March l7 and 18 the Seniors presented a three-act comedy, Papa Was a Preacher. They did an excellent iob under the most capable direction of Miss Beth Blue and everyone enioyed both participating in the play and observing it. They can't roller skate in public because some of the parishioners obiect. The boys cannot protect their cotton patch from a gang of toughs because their father opposes fighting. The daughters of the richest parishioner try to make the Preacher's sons date them-or else! The trouble-maker, Miss Jonas takes photo- graphs of the boys defending their cotton patch, and threatens to show them to the Bishop. She even obiects to Alyene reciting poems by Shakespeare! To make matters worse, Cecil puts on an acrobatic clog at school, is expelled Cagain it's Miss Joneslj and runs away. And all these disasters occur iust as Reverend and Mrs. Porter are about to celebrate their silver wedding anniversary. Weaving through all this is a delightful teen-age boy-girl complication in which two want to date the same girl while their sister is being courted by a would-be musician who serenades her with his new trumpet. Through all the pranks and troubles there flows a' lively stream of merriment and the play ended with a real thrill that the audience loved. Early in Sep- tember, about 40 enthusiastic students met and organized a new speech and dra- matic club, calling themselves the Masque and Gavel. As stated in the group's constitution, the purpose of this organization is to experience citizenship in our community, to stimulate interest in and provide opportunities for our own educa- tional development, especially in the art of effective pubilc speaking, cultivating dexterity in dramatical expression, for training in leadership ability, and to afford social activities for the members of the club. After the impressive initiation ceremony in October, the club's activities were varied and numerous. Besides their regular bi-monthly meetings, the Masque and Gavel had several large and important proiects completed during the school year. Realizing that where there's a will, there's a way, the 'group sponsored and opened Berne's first Youth Center at the Winner House. This project not only shows a lot of hard work on the part of the club, but also has provided the entire high school with a recreational center for those otherwise dull evenings. Other club projects were the annual Christmas play, and several other programs worked up for civic and community groups. The club programs were designed for an increased appreciation for speech and drama and included several outstanding guest speakers, make-up demonstration, attending plays, and several programs where the entire club participated. The Classes of '54 and '55 as Juniors devoted some time to a study and development of a form of organization for this purpose. This year at the request of the school administration for an immediate representative -body, the Student Advisory Commission was formed. lt is a temporary organization which, we hope, will provide a sound basis for the development of a form of student participation in school government. In its present form it consists of two representatives from each class who meet approximately once a week. The student representatives develop student opin- ion in classroom discussions in designated subject areas. A committee of faculty representatives works with the SAC.
