S. 3 orewor J The Senior Class of Berne-French High School is happy to present to you this 1954 edition of “OUR YESTERDAYS.” We hope the classes that follow will be able to recall as many pleasant memories as we were able to recall during our high school career. The Senior Class of 1954 feels deeply indebted to our teachers, who had patience with us, and to our parents, who made our education possible. We also wish to thank our advertisers for the wonderful way they co-operated in making this publication a success. Two Dedication The Senior Class of 1954 wishes to dedicate this edition of “OUR YESTERDAYS” to Mr. Tharp, who by kindness and patience has made our high school days an experience long to be remembered and cherished. We feel deeply indebted to Mr. Tharp, who has done such an excellent job as yearbook advisor. We wish to thank him especially for the patience shown in this branch of service. It gives us great pleasure to dedicate this 1954 annual to Mr. Charles Tharp. Three We Pay Special Tribute to . . . . THE NEW ADDITION Back in 1940 the students of Berne High School were joyous over the fact that they had a brand new school building. This new building has served well and was adequate till the past two years. The need had arisen for more space; and. as usual, our patrons, school board, and administrators realized the need. They immediately began planning, and as a result we have a new addition. We are proud of our new building. It is one of the most modern units in the State of Indiana. Noon gab-feast Books and Blue Under the iron rod SENIORS SENIOR CLASS HISTORY Four years ago we, the class of 54 hopped onto a merry-go-round that whirled us through high school. The year 1951, the first time around, found us entering high school as a bunch of green freshmen. The carrousel fared well with fifty-two riders. Engineer was Charles Spurgeon, and his assistants were Zenana Hawkins, Suzanne Yager, and Grace Liechty. Moving very cautiously, we received our first jolt at the initiation from the ’51 Seniors. Several received a second jolt from some Latin class pranksters. The contrivance collected only one scratch during the year, this being from a class party. Whirling a little faster but still cautiously, we rode into our Sophomore year. This round Karl Rich took over the engineer's position with the aid of his helpers—Ned Kip-fer, John Cook, and Paul Schug. We now had two scratches, the second acquired once more from a roller skating class party. The merry-go-round whirled at a still faster pace the third time around when it received the first big dent from the Junior Play. “It’s A Great Life” and those numerable scratches from class parties. Our chief engineer, Tom Burke and his co-chairmen— Ruth Ann Liechty. Barbara Klopfenstein, and Stuart Miller, kept us twirling smoothly and waiting for a rainbow to appear in the form of our class rings. Our merriest project was a reception for the Seniors. With still fifty-two passengers aboard, the carrousel completed its final whirl in ’54. Among its scars was found one large dent left from the play given in April. “Old Doc.” It even bore a few streamers that were collected from the Junior-Senior Reception. There was also a bulletin board with snapshots and cards that were tacked on its side to hold in memory the events of the class trip. They were placed there by the head carpenter. John Cook, and his steady hammer assistants — Charles Spurgeon, Louise Stauffer, and Jane Clauser. Reaching its final destination at last the merry-go-round slowed down, so the passengers could get off and end their ride at baccalaureate and commencement. The class chose as their motto, Stand for something, fall for nothing” Our class flower is the American Beauty Rose, the class colors—Blue and Silver. This is a special program brought to you this year by the famous television Master of Ceremonies, who is none other than LESTER MESIIBERGER. Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. This is the program. Parade of Stars, bringing you famous people of 1964. First we have MARILYN HABEGGER, the famous opera star, singing a selection from the opera “Carmen.” Next we see MARINELL LEHMAN BALSIGER with her two daughters, Georgia and Nellie. She’s teaching them the song. “As Those Caissons Go Rolling Along.” BILL SPURGEON is now a Lt. General in the Air Force. He really keeps them “stepping high.” We see a 1964 Chrysler pull into a well-kept Standard Station. This is just a link in the long chain of stations which PAUL SCHUG owns. GERRY HILTY and ROGER RAWLEY are now playing with the Brooklyn Dodgers. They have the highest batting average known in history. The “Nussbaum, Klopfenstein Nursing School” is headed by MARILYN NUSSBAUM. BARBARA KLOPFENSTEIN, and LYNETTE NUSSBAUM. JACK RABINE is now the football coach of Penn State University. The city of Berne has a new mayor. He is none other than ARLAN BALSIGER. GALEN BAUMGARTNER has a lot of fans—chickens! His hatchery is known (and heard) far and wide. We will now have a short message from Evangelist THOMAS E. BURKE. He practices what he preaches, too! Need some machine drafting done? S?e RODNEY LEHMAN. BARBARA BURDG is now married and is raising a lot of little “wolves.” Boy, are they howling! The beautiful music you hear in the background is being played by RUTH ANN LIECHTY and STEVEN STUCKY. They each have the first chair in the violin and clarinet sections respectively in the Boston Pops Orchestra. This year’s winner of the Mobile Gas Run is STUART MILLER. He’s a “fast” character. Berne’s new art teacher is MARJORIE BLUHM. She’s the best ever! JANE CLAUSER is now the private secretary to the president of the U. S. A. EDDIE FLUECKIGER is the owner of a huge potato farm. NANCY EICHER cooks for him. The two female Liberaces of this day and age are IMOGENE LEHMAN and PHYLLIS SPRUNGER. They will present us with a piano duo. KARL RICH is now Secretary of Agriculture of the U. S. We’re mighty proud of him. Berne’s two wealthiest farmers are JEROME RAUCH and CHARLES DE ARMOND. And now, a word from our sponsor. Forty BASKETBALL It was a real pleasure to work with this year’s Berne Bears. The school can be justly proud of a fine group of boys. They had qualities far and above anything that will ever be shown by a won and loss record. STU MILLER—Even though Stu was hampered by injuries that would have permanently benched any other player, he was the spark the Bears needed to beat Concordia and play many fine games this year. Stu has played varsity basketball four seasons. This fact alone indicates what a fine player he is.—N. W. LUTHER (LUTE) LEHMAN—“Tutor,” ‘Big George,” and “Gutzer” are a few of the handles this Senior Bear had this year. Luther has a fine one-hander from the side of the bucket that made him tough. He also rebounded with the best of the big boys, even though many times his 5’10” frame was no match for the 6’ plus boys he played against. He will be most remembered for his good nature and fine sportsmanship.—N. W. JACK RABINE—Another senior. Jack came to us from a three-foot snow drift in Pennsylvania; and before he could shake his boots off, we had him in a Bear uniform. He has a nice jump shot and plays a very aggressive game.—N. W. TOM EHRSAM—Only a sophomore but proved to be a real competitor. You will see a lot of Tom’s jump shots and lightning-like passes in the next two years. And to top his basketball ability, he is Forty-two clean-cut and a sportsman from the word GO!—N. W. BEN SPRUNGER—Ben disproved a rule. When he got a girl, his ball playing improved. He really came to life after Christmas, and his rebounding and jump-turn shots were wonderful. Ben could out-rebound boys that had six inches on him, and sometimes he would take a defensive rebound and lead the fast break down the floor. Ben has one more year, so keep your eye on him.—N. W. JOHN KIRCHHOFER — “Ole Hawk Eye.” John holds the single game record for free throws. He dumped in sixteen against Concordia. John has another year with the Bears, and with his point-making effort placing him among the top ten scorers in the county this year, the next season should be his best.—N. W. JOHN NUSSBAUM—John has a lot in him. If and when he lets it go, he’ll be terrific.—N. W. KENT SCHINDLER—A sophomore who should see a lot of action next year. He’s big and has a good eye.—N. W. Many opportunities arc provided for those who are interested in music. This year we have had the privilege of working with Mr. Ronald Walton, who has done much in the development of our musical organizations. We wish to thank Mr. Walton for his effort and hard work. The Berne-French School has five instrumental organizations: the Band, Orchestra, Pep Band, Junior Band, and Junior Orchestra. The vocal organizations are the A Cap-pella Choir, Madrigal Singers, and the Second Chorus. The latter is a training group for the A Cappella Choir. On February 6 many of our students entered in the District Solo and Ensemble Contest at Fort Wayne. Those receiving superior ratings then entered the State Solo and Ensemble Contest on February 20. The brass quartet, vocal trio, vocal duet, piano duet, violin duet, string quartet, two barbershop quartets, and the flute trio were the ensembles which received superior ratings at the State Contest. All groups have been active in both school and community functions and with pride look back on a most successful year. This year the music department gave a Christmas and Spring Choral Concert and a Fall and Spring Instrumental Concert, in which the different organizations participated. Fifty-two A CAPPELLA The largest of musical groups at Berne High School is the A Cappella Choir, this year numbering around eighty-six voices. This group, composed mostly of upper-classmen, has become a well-known and active member of our music department. The A Cappella gave its first performance this year at Decatur at the annual Sunday School Convention. The fall and winter season also saw them singing for the dedication of the new building, for the Union Meetings, besides being featured on the Christmas Choral Concert held in December. This spring the Choir gave a series of vesper concerts and appeared on the Spring Choral Concert. The play concerned the fortunes of Poppy and Mother Rose, who could never say “no” to a homeless child. In the Pumpkin Shell, their tiny summer cottage by the ocean, it was often hard to tell their own children from the strangers they took under their wing. There was Janey, a recent acquisition, who was afraid of everything. After being voted in as a member of the family by the other children, she learned many lessons and overcame her fright to the extent that she rescued a drowning woman. Then there was Jimmy John, a problem child who wore braces on his legs. No one had ever been kind to him before, but Mother’s heart went out to him. He, too, learned to enjoy real family life. In the midst of this hectic but happy existence, tragedy struck; Poppy succumbed to a heart attack. After a very hard time trying to keep the Pumpkin Shell going, fortune smiles on the Rose family in a heart-warming but unexpected manner; a story about Jimmy John is a tremendous success. The play concerns Old Doc Hillary who thinks his son Bob is coming home from medical school to practice with him. But Young Doc has been offered a rich and easy big-city practice with Dr. Brand—and also an opportunity to marry Helen, his daughter. It all sounds fine but for these two things: first, Young Doc is in love with his home town girl and, second, he doesn't have nerve enough to tell his father that he isn’t going to practice with him. The home-town girl breaks off her engagement when she hears of his plans, and Bob goes off on a trip with the Brands without facing his father. He leaves him a note; and when Old Doc reads it he suffers a stroke. It’s then that neighborly Ma Brown takes things in hand. She fakes a telegram to Old Doc, and as a result he thinks that Young Doc is taking over the hometown practice after all. He dies happy in that belief. But Young Doc has no intention of doing any such thing, and says so when he hears what Ma Brown has done. Then in a compelling scene of great emotional force, Ma shows Young Doc what half a century of practice with the home folks has meant in human lives saved. Young Doc then foi-lows the right path and chooses the practice to which his father so faithfully devoted himself.
