We want to express our thanks and appreciation to our parents, who by their sacrifices and encouragement have made our education possible; to the faculty, for their cooperation; and to the advertisers, who assisted in making this publication a success. Two The Senior class of 1953 wishes to dedicate this edition of “Our Yesterdays” to Mr. Weller, who with patience and kindness has helped to make our high school days more enjoyable and more profitable. CAROLINE I. HIRSCHY Our gratitude and thanks goes to Miss Hirschy who, after thirty-one years of teaching in Berne High School, is resigning her post as teacher at the end of the 1952-53 school year. As principal, she did much to raise the standards of the school and keep them high. We regret that she is resigning, but we do appreciate her years of faithful service here. FREEMAN BURKHALTER We extend our deepest appreciation to Mr. Burkhalter for his patience and understanding shown throughout the years. We feel it a rare privilege to have him with us and we can never begin to repay him for what he has given to us. Nine Around the Clock at Berne-French High Catching up on the latest Artists at work There’s music in the air Luncheon for two Do not disturb Time out for Miss Blue It’s been a long day The rush is on Ten Destination High School Diploma With great anticipation the class of ’53 began its long, adventurous journey through high school land. Our president, Charles Lehman; vice-president, Chester Smith; secretary, Patsy Rumple; and treasurer, Erma Habegger, planned the first part of our trip to that far-off destination, High School Diploma. We started at Freshmanburg, where we made our presence known. During our stay, many joined the Latin Club and underwent initiation. For entertainment we went skating at Sunset Roller Rink. This marked a milestone in our social lives. After a long but enjoyable stay, we traveled on to Sophomoreville, where we refueled with world history and plane geometry. We also chose our class rings here. Our capable officers during our sojourn were Max Lehman, president; Arlene Sprung-er, vice-president; Jerry Sprunger, secretary; Keith Reinhard, treasurer. We boarded a plane and continued following our itinerary until we came to the scenic village called Junior Junction. While residing here we elected the following town board: Chester Smith, president; Danny Liechty, vice-president; Marjorie Sprunger, secretary; Bill Brace, treasurer. Honor was brought to our class when we presented the play, “Our Miss Brooks.” We joined the residents of Senior City for a skating party at Roller Dome. We also entertained them with a reception, at which they invited us to inhabit their city. Senior City became a busy study and social center when our class moved in. We elected a city council composed of Keith Reinhard, president; Jerry Sprunger, vice-president; Gloria Reinhard, secretary; and Max Lehman, treasurer. The surrounding communities in high school land joined us in a Hallowe’en party and in presenting the operetta, “Carmelita.” We also enjoyed a skating party with our junior friends. We visited Faculty Town for a party, which was high-lighted by our own “Spike Jones and his Senior City Slickers.” Our next community project was the play, “A Case of Springtime.” At a town meeting we chose green and gold as our class colors and the white carnation as our flower. We decided upon the motto, “Don’t try dying; die trying.” For a vacation our class went to Chicago, where we did all but relax for two days. We returned no more to Senior City but went straight to High School Diploma. The departure is sad, but we realize new adventures are awaiting us on the journey of life. Ned Bixler dribbles down the floor He shoots—“Yea Rah —he raises our score. What would the Berne Bears do without him For so often he puts the ball through the rim. We have a nice guy- his name is Bill Brace. He's got curly hair and a real cute face. In five minutes’ time he can devour five cokes And in between swigs entertain you with jokes. If your car breaks down and you’re in a panic. Call Jerry Flueckiger; he’s a good mechanic. He’ll fix a flat and repair the door And quiet your motor down to a roar. Paul Gchman can really sing. He’ll soon be just as good as Bing. And then he’ll entertain the crowds And lift their hearts above the clouds. Fred Habcggcr has a neat Chevrolet, It’s usually filled with girls, they say. Down the road and over the hill At the rate they're going, they're liable to spill. Darlene Heare likes to play ball; The Daisies will probably give her a call. She'll be the star player of the team And soon will be popular as peaches and cream. Shirley Heyerly, known as Kaye, Will be married the 31st of May. Her and Rog will have a life of joys With two little girls and four ornery boys. Ardena Hirschy is a riot. She is simply never quiet. Always full of vigor and vim, That's why she remains so slim. Ernie Isch with eyes of blue Is very tall and handsome, too. He's friendly to all and this is why He's a popular guy at Berne-French High. Ann Kachr is a Senior cutie. She is noted for her beauty. She is fun and for this reason Has a hundred dates a season. Leaping Lena leaping along, Charles Lehman singing a song. Ardena Hirschy by his side Gets a very bumpy ride. Eighteen Colleen Lehman plays a clarinet; She plays it well but better yet She's sixty inches full of fun. Her face as radiant as the sun. Keith Reinhard, the Senior clown. With humor will remove your frown. He has two interests that give him pleasure, His art career and his Junior treasure. Evan Lehman—it's a fact. Could easily do a comedy act. For from this mastermind’s great brain Come simple ditties that entertain. Darlene Rich is quite a dame; Gibson soon will be her name. Then she’ll dust and clean the rug And make her new home cozy and snug. If you’re in a hurry and want to arrive. Get Margery Lehman and let her drive. She’ll entertain you all the way With a cute little giggle that’s light and gay. Patsy Rumple can manage a sir” And get any guy to go steady with her. Many girls would like to know What techniques she uses to get her beau. Marilyn Lehman—to a friend A helping hand will always lend. She’ll take time to do a kind deed. She has a soft heart for those in need. Doug Schindler—all through the year Has an abundant supply of good will and cheer. He keeps plodding on though the work is tough, And can always smile when the going is rough. Max Lehman has a good reputation. The Yager home is his present station. He goes there often to see his Rosy To whom he murmurs. My sweet posy.” In the hall the girls all sigh When Chester Smith goes walking by. With all the kids he really rates But only Junior girls he dates. Myrtella Lehman is busy at work; At the Equity she is a clerk. In no other store will you meet A girl who is so kind and sweet. Her hair is blond—blue her eyes: Arlene Sprunger attracts the guys. She is vivid and fascinating. It’s no wonder she is dating. Roy Lehman is often seen Working down in our canteen. His management throughout this year Has been appreciated here. Jerry Sprunger’s a basketball star. Asthma is his favorite car. Jerry’s smile we’ll never forget. It's thrilled many girls, on this you can bet. Arne Liechty is crazy about girls. He likes them with or without curls. By many now he is adored For with him they are never bored. Who is that behind that book? Let’s go over and take a look. It's Keith Sprunger in a chair With long legs stretched, he’s reading there. Danny Liechty gets a letter. If he was sad. he now feels better. The words were written by someone dear. A girl whom Danny wishes near. Marjorie Sprunger is almost dizzy. The kids at the Palmer House keep her so busy. She brings us sundaes, pop. and candy. We all agree that she’s just dandy. Rochelle Liechty has a craving for Stu. Against her wishes, others do too. But she goes merrily through each day Making wisecracks without any pay. If you’d like to hear a beautiful tune. Be sure to hear Shirley Steury real soon. She plays Tchaikovsky and Chopin with ease As her limber fingers fly over the keys. Karen Moser is set for life— She is destined to be a wife. Already she has the man picked out And loves him dearly, there is no doubt. Add. subtract, multiply, divide— John Stucky’s knowledge of math is wide. Without the slightest move of his thumb Of two large numbers can tell you the sum. Shirley Moser, quiet and nice. Would be very happy to give you advice On how to make a beautiful dress. For she’s a good seamstress—this we confess. Dick Sweeney has lots of mechanical skill At which he really works with a will. He’s very good out in the shop. And someday he will reach the top. Reggie Myers works for Shell; He likes his job there very well. He fills the tank of every car With gas so they can travel far. Julia Yoder is always jolly; She abstains from evil folly. A success in life she’s sure to be For she takes studies seriously. Stanley Neuenschwander is the he That fills a. Freshman girl with glee. At Gerber’s he a name has made And for his good work he is paid. Gloria Reinhard thinks about Ted. He is the uppermost thought in her head. Sing a song of Erma. A lass who is a poet. Don’t you think her clever verses By all means surely show it? (Editor’s Note— We sort of slipped this in; We hope she doesn’t know it.) He’s gone just now. but she’ll.wait his return. Then they’ll both settle down right here in Berne. Poems by ERMA HABEGGER Nineteen UPRAQV CLASS PROPHECY ALUMNI MEETING We will now have the minutes of the Alumni meeting of 1962. “. . . A motion was made by Mr. Bill Brace and seconded by Mr. Arne Liechty that as an experiment for keeping the files, the graduates of the class of 1953 send in movies of themselves to be spliced into one film . . .” The aggregation of the movies will be shown at this time. The first scene shows MAX LEHMAN with his F. F. A. boys judging in Chicago. There he is with Rosie and “little Lema.’’ Next we see FREDERICK HABEGGER conducting the Miami Beach Symphony Orchestra. Jerry has drive and is a go-getter! lie is very proficient at stealing the ball from a dribbler, can get off his feet like an Australian jack rabbit, and has the eye for the hoop that makes for two points. Jerry is a Senior, but he is just getting started in his basketball career. Berne will be proud of him in the years to come—mark my words.—N. W. Stu Miller—Stu has improved tremendously this year. lie can out jump the tallest man, score when pressed, and pass where there seems to be no opening. Stu’s greatest asset is his ability to think and act with such lightning speed. Stu can see an opening before it’s open, pass through it, rebound the shot, and get himself set for defense quicker than the scorekeeper can mark down two points. Stu is with the Bears for one more season, and we will be looking for even greater things—if that is possible.—N. W. Chet Smith—“Ole Mr. Reliable.” This was Chet’s first full season on the varsity and he showed a real ability at rebounding. Chester’s scrap and fight spurred the boys on many times when they would have slowed down. Chet has a good one hand shot from straight away and a good knack at following his shots for Forty-jour the rebound. Chester is a Senior, and we’ll miss him next year as a player and a friend.—N. W. Ned Bixler—Another Senior whom the Bears will miss next year. Ned really has a knack at ball handling—once he grabs a rebound it’s not easy taken from him. Ned has a good shot from the corner and gets a tip-in when we need it. Max Lehman—Here is another fellow that took a tremendous beating under the boards this year. Max was not as tall as the men whom he usually had to play against, but his ability to get position more than made up for his lack of size. Max is also a Senior, and we shall miss him next year, but not as much as the other boys because he is leaving his better half here with us for a few more years. His determination will carry him forward in later years.—N. W. John Kirchhofer—A Sophomore with a lot of promise. John has three qualifications that are going to make him one of Berne’s all time greats. Those are: (1) his cool attitude at the free throw line, (2) his ability to use his head when the game is tight, and (3) his intelligent attitude toward girls. (He can’t see ’em.)—N. W. Luther Lehman—The boys called him “Big George” for a good reason—not ’cause he is so big, but because of his hook shot. Luther has a real eye for the basket, and is not afraid of a scrap. We’re looking for big things from him next season.—N. W. Ben Sprunger—Another Sophomore with great possibilities. Ben can jump, tip, rebound, and has drive. We are really going to need his height next year. Ben has one bad habit, however, and that is his ability to stay out till 12:45 A. M. occasionally.—N. W. John Cook—“Dapper Dan” Cook, a Junior who played good ball for the Bears. Indiana basketball was a bit new to John, but next year should see him rolling along in top form. John had no faults except for putting the boys in the shade when he would come “dressed” for an away game.—N. W. INTRAMURALS The intramural program of Berne High School was carried on each Monday and Wednesday noon during the basketball season. There were six teams: John Stucky’s, Arne Liechty’s, Bill Brace’s, Reginald Myer’s, Doug Schindler’s and Keith Sprunger’s. Ball game jam Elmerville Fifty-two Music Music Plays An Important Part at Berne High Band - Orchestra - A Cappella Glee Clubs - Ensembles Music is important at Berne High School. Our music department provides many opportunities for all those who are interested in music. The greatest opportunity which our music department provides, however, is the privilege of working with Mr. Freeman Burkhalter, under whose direction our musical organizations have reached a degree of success which otherwise would not have been possible. The most active organizations of our music department are the band, orchestra, a cappella, and the pep band. The newest member of the music department is the madrigal club, a choir composed of Juniors and Seniors. The Girls’ Glee Club and the Boys’ Glee Club are also active members of the music department. Mr. Ralston has taken over the direction of the Junior Band and the Junior Orchestra. Under his direction the groups have become much more active than in previous years. This year the a cappella presented the operetta, “Carmelita,” on October 16 and 17. The different organizations also presented a Christmas program in December and a Spring musical concert in April. On February 7, many of our students entered the District Solo and Ensemble Contest at Fort Wayne. Those receiving superior ratings then entered the State Solo and Ensemble Contest at Indianapolis on February 21. The string quartet, three barbershop quartets, a girls’ trio, a trombone trio, and a piano duo are the ensembles which received superior ratings at the State Contest. Fifty-four BAND The Berne High School Band is an active organization in our school and in our community. The band played for the Berne Centennial in August, the Decatur Fair, and the Bluffton Street Fair. The band also took active part in the Christmas musical program and in the Spring musical program in April. In the fall it presented “Carmelita,” an operetta in three acts. The A Cappella took part in the Christmas concert and Spring musical concert which were held in the gymnasium. The A Cappella gave their annual sacred Christmas concert at the Mennonite Church on December 28. It also took part in the Watchnight Service, the Union Meetings, and the all-high school Youth For Christ service on March 23. The choir is the largest in the history of Berne High. The Americans saved Rancho Valverde from destruction by the Navajos. for which the Spanish were very grateful. This farce-comedv centered around Mr. Peabody’s attempts to straighten out his family by instigating the “Peabody Plan.” Each member was to reach certain goals, but Mr. Peabody had not counted on the methods his famly used to fulfill his wishes. With a sick horse in the garage, his home sold, and his daughter jilted, Mr. Peabody found that it was a Great Life—but not quite in the way he had expected. He didn’t really hurt her, but it caused Bob plenty of trouble. He can’t convince his girl that he took up magic only when she started throwing him over for a college man and he had to show her how polished he really was. Now he was practically suspected of homicide. Meanwhile, the formal coat Bob borrowed from her to wear during the magic act got torn, and it comes out that she got it from her father, the principal. To hide the damage, Bob puts it in the laundry bag, not realizing that the bag contains curtains that are to be dyed a bright yellow. By the time he has discovered the fate of the laundry bag it’s too late and the outraged principal has discovered everything. Bob's worried family decides to entertain the P.T.A. ladies in the hope they may intercede for him. But, before Bob can prove how misunderstood he is, his innocentlooking kid brother has set up a seres of home-made booby traps and the outraged P.T.A. ladies walk right into them. They want to denounce him to the authorities, who are already out after him. Bob cries, “I must be living under a jinx!” However, things are finally solved by a delightful turn of events, which leave Bob sitting on top of the world. Sixty-five LATIN CLUB The Latin Club is composed of first and second year Latin students and is under the leadership of Miss Beth Blue. Among some of the activities of the club is the annual initiation party at which time second-year students welcome new Latin students into the Club in an interesting manner. They also do some projects in class during the course of the year. CLUB 13 Club 13, a speech club, was formed this year and had as its main purpose that of promoting good speech in school. The following officers were elected: Paul Gehman, presi- dent; Charles Lehman, vice-president; Erma Ha-begger, secretary; and Colleen Lehman, treasurer. Club 13 presented a Christmas program for the student body and they also entered an oratory contest at Decatur. F.F.A. The Berne-French F.F.A., under the direction of Mr. Leonard Kingsley, meets once a month to plan the various activities it engages in. Among many other activities, this club farms the school farm. The motto of the club is: “Learning to do—Doing to learn—Earning to live— Living to serve.” SCHOOL CALENDAR Sept. 2—School opens again. Once more the halls of B. F. H.
