HIGH SCHOOL This edition of “OUR YESTERDAYS’’ has been published by the class of 1952 with the hope that every reader will be able to recall, with many fond memories, all the activities he or she has engaged in while in high school. We, the class of 1952, feel it a rare privilege to graduate in the year of Berne’s Centennial. We are proud of our town as well as our high school, and thank both for all their efforts in help and co-operation they have given us. Then, too, the Annual Staff wishes to thank the many teachers, parents, students and friends who have co-operated so generously in making this publication possible.—D. N. This issue of “OUR YESTERDAYS' has been dedicated to Leonard Kingsley, a teacher who with untiring efforts has raised Berne High's Agriculture Department up to one of the highest in the area. That guilty look Nine Art Teacher Birthday Gerry Colleen Paul Angel Cooks Daisy Belle Phil’s in trouble “Hi” « •� Non Is The Hour In the fall of ’48, we 45 blew in, or slid in (opinions differ), but nevertheless we energetic freshmen entered Berne-French High School. For our class officers, to guide us through our first year, we chose Junior Bertsch for president; Audrey Whitehurst, vice president; Daisy Heller, secretary; and JoAnn Baumgartner, treasurer. November 22 we had a class party in the school gym. As sophisticated sophomores we welcomed a few new members to our class. We chose Paul Sprunger as president; Don Neuen as vice president; Carolyn Smith as secretary; and Susan Rumple as treasurer. A skating party was held at Decatur on April 24 with everyone having a swell time. At last we became juniors and could be called the upper-classmen. For our class officers we chose Don Neuen as president; Paul Sprunger as vice president; Carolyn Smith as secretary; and Daisy Heller as treasurer. On February 13, our class presented the play, “Cheaper By the Dozen.” under the direction of Miss Blanche Stone. In May we played hosts to the Seniors at the Junior-Senior Reception. Finally, we had arrived at the moment when we could be called “Seniors.” We elected the following officers to guide us safely through our senior year: Junior Bertsch as president; Daisy Heller as vice president; Marjorie Stauffer as secretary; and Roberta Wulliman as treasurer. On October 15, our class joined the juniors in a skating party at Roller Dome in Fort Wayne. Our class colors are beige and brown. Our class flower is the sunburst rose. For our class motto we have chosen “Don’t be sharp, Don’t be flat, Just be natural.” For our educational class trip we chose to go to Chicago, 111. Another commencement has passed and B. F. H. S. has sent out another class to make over the world. We wish to express our gratitude to all the teachers for their patience and kindness. One Thousand Nine Hundred and Fifty-Two. • Signed THE SENIORS N ineteen CLASS REVIEW OF THE CLASS OF ''52'' New York—July 25, 1958 JoAnn and Bonita are on a volley ball team in Madison Square Gardens. The name of the team I believe is “Bumy’s Devils.” Nolan has announced his research on how to whirl a car approaching an intersection at eighty miles an hour, so that it will turn a complete rectangle when completed. The first appearance will be shown August 4 on Times Square. Bill Kipfer is now an “Ag” teacher. He has brought farm life to this city with his herd of registered Holstein cattle. Detroit, Michigan—July 28, 1958 The world series opened today with Don Neuen playing center field with the Detroit Tigers. He is married to the boss’s daughter. Shirley Lehman has accepted a position as a Beauty Consultant, she gives pointers on how to curl eyelashes and comb hair. Paris, France—August 1. 1958 Kedwin is now studying art. He says the French girls are rather nice. Norma Jean is a bookkeeper for John. They are planning to sell Dunbar Furniture, Inc., in Paris. India—November 2, 1958 Phyllis Lehman is out here doing medical missionary work, we are sure she is doing quite well. Siberia—August 23. 1958 “Jakie” is in the Navy. They got him when he left school. Daviville—August 19, 1958 Roger now is co-owner of “Daviville Hatcheries.” He always did like to be around chickens. Bluffton—August 2. 1958 Lorine B. is slaving at home over a kitchen stove feeding her family of 3. Alaska—September 25, 1958 Colleen is out here helping her sister in the Children’s Home, she always looked as though she would be the motherly type. Geneva—October 6, 1958 Alice Brunner is living here, by the looks of things she is raising quite a “Pyle.” Berne—October 12, 1958 Art Habegger is president of Foodtown, Inc., the largest business of foodstores in this part of Indiana. Carol Lehman, she’s Gehman now—is teaching a kindergarten class. She was married four years ago—her class—her children of course. Ruth Gilliom has just changed her name to Burke. She designs clothes, children’s clothes that is. Shirley Liechtv is really a successful nurse. She always wanted to be a nurse after she married Joe. Twenty John is farming and still driving a “Buick.” They say he has gotten himself a woman. Onale is now teaching the third grade having taken Miss Hilda Lehmans position. Junior is in the roofing business having taken over his father’s trade. Claranell and Gloria Hanni are still slinging food at the Palmer House. They say Gloria is still out “Kuhn” hunting. Linn Grove—September 1, 1958 Daisy married her high school sweetheart (Rolland). They are doing missionary work at home. Mary is married to a Hartford coach, she is also teaching a class on “Moral Support to Basketball Boys. Willshire. Ohio—November 5, 1958 Marilyn is a part time stenographer in this town. Bob and her are getting prepared for the future. Atlanta, Georgia Audrey Whitehurst has just won the title of “Miss America.” Mr. Habegger must be pretty proud of her. Greenville, South Carolina—August 5, 1958 Marjorie is married to a Bob Jones graduate—he has his own church now here in this city. Indianapolis—September 8. 1958 Virginia married a photographer. Theymet at college at a camera club meeting. Chicago—October 1. 1958 Susan received her B.S. at Purdue and is organizing the world’s largest 4-H club for girls and boys in this city. Burbank. California—October 8, 1958 Mary Alice has finally settled out here, the navy really moves around—but with a family coming on things had to be changed. Syracuse, Indiana—September 15. 1958 Carolyn Smith, and her husband. John, are living on Lake Wawasee. She is doing part-time nursing at the local hospital. Fort Wayne—September 13, 1958 Ruby Moser and Roberta Wulliman have been named as head nurses at the St. Joseph Hospital. Joan Nussbaum is chief X-ray technician. Paul and Jerry are mechanics. They build custom built stock cars as a hobby, and race them at the Fort Wayne speedway. Gloria Lehman is now living on a big cattle ranch—her husband is raising 700 head of cattle. Gloria Sue is an airline stewardess for T. W. A. She flies the New York to Chicago line. Phil Kaehr has just gotten home from the navy. He is now engaged in farming in French township. These sayings have been thought in the minds of Gloria Lehman and Gloria Timmons—compiled in the High School Annual of “52”. Twenty-one CAN YOU IMAGINE? Aggressive and cool. One of our seniors whom we will really miss next year. Paul was very good at faking a guard and driving in for a lay-up. JUNIOR BERTSCH -Jr. really blossomed out this year. Ilis rebounding and ball handling were excellent. Jr. is proof that hard work pays off. We'll miss him next year. JIM GERBER—One of our reserves who proved his worth in the Dunkirk game. JERRY ZERKEL- One of our varsity reserves. JERRY SPRUNGER—“Mr. Speedy” is an all-around ball player. Jerry’s drive and aggressiveness were a threat all the time. Jerry is with us again next year and we’re looking for big things. NED BIXLER—A very good rebounder and has a fine shot from the side. With us another year. MAX LEHMAN—An aggressive guard with many potentialities. Should go strong next year. PHIL KAEIIR—A senior who didn’t play the last of the year, but was a good shot and a boy who kept the fight in the game. CHESTER SMITH—Came to us mid-way in the season and really played ball. Has a good eye for the bucket. We’re looking for big things from him next season. STUART MILLER- -Stu. played good ball this year and his experience should really help our club next season. Stu. is very good at long shooting and can “set” from away out. ERNIE ISCH- Another capable reserve who helped in many ways. Forty-six “O m O MUSIC —THE UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE The Berne-French Tup. High School has three music organizations which are active in community life: The High School Band, Orchestra, and A Cappella Choir. It has four training groups: Girls’ Glee Club, Boys’ Glee Club. Junior Orchestra, and Junior Band. All of these organizations are under the very capable direction of Mr. Freeman Burkhalter. We wish to thank and congratulate our director for his fine and unselfish work. This year quite a number of students entered the District Solo and Ensemble Contest which was held at Fort Wayne, Indiana, February 9. Many of the students representing our school received Superior ratings. On February 23 the State Solo and Ensemble Contest was held at Butler University, Indianapolis, Indiana. Those who received Superior ratings at this contest were: Marilvnn Eicher, vocal solo; Marjorie Stauffer, vocal solo; Shirley Ann Steury, piano solo; Marilyn Habeager, piano solo; flute trio; barbershop quartet; and the string quartet. Excellent ratings were received by: Ruth Ann Liechtv, violin solo; Don Neuen, vocal solo; brass quartet; and a girls’ trio. We wish to congratulate those who represented our school in these contests. Forty-eight BAND The band played for the Annual Fall Festival, the Bluffton Free Street Fair, and the Firemen’s Convention. We also furnished music at the home basketball games and the Christmas and spring musicals. It also was entered in the contest. The band has two regular rehearsals each week. M. E. A. Convention in Indianapolis. We also took a one-day tour, singing at the North Manchester High School. Manchester College, and the Nappanee High School. We gave two joint concerts, one with the Manchester Civic Symphony, and the other with the Nappanee High School Band. The choir gave a concert at Taylor University and sang in many of the local churches. Our Annual Christmas Carol Concert at the First Mennonite Church was tape recorded and broadcast over the Portland Station. WPGW. The choir participated in the district contest at Hartford City on April 5. The state contest was held at Delphi on April 19. The choir also sang at school functions including the County-wide PTA meeting and the Christmas and spring music concerts. LATIN CLUB The Latin Club composed of first and se:ond year Latin students is a state organization with other schools having a club similar to ours. An initiation is held by the second year students for all new students joining the club. This event is looked forward to by all second year students long in advance. This year the first and second year students each had a Christmas party in their room and after having refreshments and exchanging gifts they sang carols in Latin to the grades downstairs. The activities of the Latin Club so far this year have consisted of an initiation for the freshman students. Plans for a Christmas party were dropped because of the dismissal of school due to bad weather. A party for bath Latin I and Latin II students is to bo given before the dismissal of school for summer vacation. The canteen operates during each noon hour with two different members of the class taking charge every day. Seniors who are not in the band or on the basketball team open the canteen during basketball games. The profits made were used for our class trip. The story was based on the famous radio program about Miss Brooks, the fun-loving, trouble-getting-into English teacher. Her problem was putting on the class play in a school which was already crowded with extra-curricular activities. She and the coach wanted to use the same people at the same time, but finally they co-operated to do a “bang-up” job.
