Ten In 1946, twenty-seven eager Freshmen entered the institution of learning called Berne High School. Our first class officers were LaMar Wintcregg as president, Waneta Zimmerman as vice president, Duane Lehman as secretary, and Joan Moser as treasurer. They successfully guided our class through its first year of high school. In the fall of 47 a new class of Sophomores enrolled in B. H. S. We chose Ronald Townsend as president, Duane Lehman as vice president, Cynthia Kirchhofer as secretary, Anna Schwartz as treasurer. In March we had a swell skating party at Portland. Everyone had a good time. In our Junior year our class was enlarged by many new students. We welcomed them to our class and hope they enjoyed their last two years as much as we did. For our Junior class leaders we chose Ronald Townsend as president, Ronald Krehbiel as vice president, LaMar Winteregg as secretary, and Pauline Seesenguth as treasurer. Under the direction of Miss Stone our class play, Off the Pewter Platter was a huge success. At the end of the year we entertained the Seniors at the Junior-Senior Reception held at the high school. On the last lap of our journey we embarked with Ronald Townsend as president, Howard Habegger as vice president, Anna Schwartz as secretary, and Bonnie Huser as treasurer. In April we presented our Senior class play, Little Miss Dreamer” which through the efforts of Miss Beth Blue was a great success. Our Senior year was indeed a full one with many activities. We shall sincerely regret leaving the students and teachers of Berne-French High School. Yes, I am a nurse at the Riley Hospital in Indianapolis, and I came up here to see my sister this past week. What are you doing now? I am a secretary for the manager of Saks Fifth Avenue here in New York City. I am headed for Berne to spend my vacation. When are you planning to return? I am leaving today on the train. Why not ride along with me in my new Pontiac? Ted Lehman sold it to me last week. He is a Pontiac dealer here in New York. Why that would be swell! Wt can talk about our former classmates and what they are doing now. Keith Parr runs a filling station down the street here. He can service our car before we start for Berne. Well, we’re off! Have you seen any of our former classmates recently, Kathryn? I saw Eloise Smith just before I left Indianapolis. She set my hair. She now has her own Beauty Shop about one block from the hospital. Anna, where did you get that pretty dress? I got this in New York I bought it from Joan Moser and Deloris Liechty They run a small dress shop across the street from my office. By the way, have you heard anything about this new discovery people are talking about? Twenty No, I haven’t. What is it? Ronald Townsend and Duane Lehman discovered a secret element that is twice as powerful as that atomic bomb! They always were the chemists at school, weren’t they? Yes, and now they each have their own laboratory in Chicago. Let’s turn the radio on. Try and find some music if you can. Here’s some — listen, don’t those voices sound familiar? You have just heard Miss Mary Fuhrer and Mr. William Barrett in the Opera AIDA. And now we bring you a special news bulletin. Supreme Court Justice Russell Hirschy has just announced that he will definitely run for President. Listen to that! I knew Russell would accomplish something great some day, didn't you, Anna? Yes, I knew it when he was still in high school. I got a letter from Virginia Habegger yesterday. She wrote that she met Gyneth Liechty at a Missionary Conference in India. They were very glad to see each other. Look at that neat restaurant! Let’s stop for a bite to eat. Look who the waitress is! Why, I believe it is Joan Habegger. Hi! Joan. Well, if it isn't my old classmates! You don't work here yourself, do you Joan? No, my husband and I own it. LaMar! Here is someone you know. You two should have stopped a half-hour sooner and you would have met Ronnie and Cynthia. Ronnie is the pastor of a church in Landsdale, Pennsylvania. In the letter I got from Janice Amstutz, she wrote that she got transferred to a different hospital where she is the head of the nurses' staff. She also said that Sherry Habegger is an interior decorator in that same town. That reminds me, Judson Lehman recently accepted a position as a professional artist in Columbus, Ohio. We had better get some more gas at this station. Isn't that attendant Walter Mazelin? Hi! Remember us? Well, we are finally in Elkhart. Let’s find a place to eat. Isn't that Dorothy Bertsch across the street? Hi. Dorothy! What are you doing here? I am a medical secretary for Dr. Ross. Do you know that Bonnie Huser is here in Elkhart, too? She works in the Bank. I also got a letter from Anna Laura Weidler. She is the librarian in Auburn, Ind. The Zollncr Pistons are playing in Fort Wayne tonight, Anna, would you like to go? Howard Habegger is now playing with the Pistons. He’s high point man every time! Yes, I want to see Howard play again. I also read in the paper that Jerry Lehman recently became manager of the team. I bet he's proud! Isn't that Julia Liechty over there by the door? I wonder what she is doing now. She is a nurse in the Lutheran Hospital. She is married and lives here in Fort Wayne. Shirley Hirschy is a child evangelism worker in Fort Wayne. She always did like children, didn't she? Well, I'll have to hurry back to Berne or you will miss your bus back to Indianapolis, Kathryn. John Burke, who is now married and has a family, is an assistant to Cliff Gilliom—his father-in-law at Dunbars. Richard Augsburger is now manager of the Berne Witness. He is now married to his high school sweetheart, Pauline Seesenguth. They read the Witness to their two children every other night. I see David Gehman has followed his father's profession. He is a minister in California. Logan is now head man of the Chevy garage in Berne, and Doyle Lehman is a farmer. He owns a 200 acre farm. He is married and has twin boys. Well, here's good old Berne, again. There are Mary Lou Walchle and Elsie Lehman talking together. Hi girls! Elsie, are you still private secretary for your father at the Lumber Company? Yes, I am. Mary Lou, what are you doing now? I am a housewife here in Berne. Les, my husband, gave our little boy a pair of boxing gloves for his birthday. I will try and locate Lillian Baumgartner some time when I go back to Indianapolis. She is a cheerleader at Indiana University. Well, Kathryn, there's your bus. I am sure we are convinced that our former classmates have all succeeded, aren't you? Yes, I am. Good bye, .Anna. So-long, Kathryn. Anna Schwartz Kathryn Soldner Twenty-one On September 6, 1949, the Junior class came rushing in to begin their 11th year of school. For our officers we chose Jack Nussbaum for our President; Charles Nagel, Vice President; Jan-ean Sprunger, Secretary; Nancy Lehman, Treasurer. On February 3rd we presented our junior play, ''Meet Me In Saint Louis.” We wish to thank Miss Blanche Stone for her wonderful direction. On May 12th we played host to the seniors at the Junior-Senior Reception We don’t want to brag, but we do think we did a good job. Ronnie” played both forward and center. He used a one-handed push shot. This is his fourth year on the team. KEITH PARR—played both forward and center. His greatest asset to the team was his ability to get rebounds and passing of: to his teammates. Keith was a hard worker and this was his first year on the team. HOWARD HABEGGER—was the best and most consistent scorer on the team. He could jump and rebound well off both back-boards and was the center of most of the fast breaks. Howdic” had a lot of drive. This was his third year on the team. LAMAR WINTEREGG—playing at one or the guard’s positions was an aggressive and hard working ball player His favorite shot was a one-handed push shot from the foul circle. He was a good defensive player. Ths was LaMar's second year on the team. TED LEHMAN—a forward, scored well in many of the games. Ted was a good scrapper and an aggressive player. He rebounded well off the offensive backboard. His best shot was a two-handed set shot from the side. This is his second year on the team. DUANE LEHMAN—a guard, was a steady ball player and a good team man He usually had one of the toughest defensive assignments and was always willing and alert to help his teammates. Duane could drive in and feed off well. This year marks his second year of experience. LOGAN SPRUNGER—played both forward and guard positions equally well This, plus his speed and aggressiveness, made him the most valuable reserve on the team. Logan's best shot was a one-handed shot from the side of the floor. This was his first year on the team. RONALD TOWNSEND—a guard, was an excellent passer and dribbler. He had a lot of drive and determination and was most valuable in the late stages of the game. He used a one-handed push shot as his favorite. This was Ronnie's first year on the varsitv. JACK NUSSBAUM—a junior, was a valuable reserve and when inserted into the game usually came through. He was best in around the basket where he could grab offensive rebounds. This is his first year on the varsity. GEORGE BALSIGER—another junior, was a reserve center. With more experience George should develop into a good pivotman. He is an aggressive and hard working ball player. This is his first year of first team experience. DICK AUGSBURGER—the regular center until forced by illness to give up basketball, was a fine team player, rebounder, and defensive man. He had developed a nice hook shot and was beginning to score well. This was Dick's third year on the first team. JERRY LEHMAN—our student manager, was a very likeable and earnest helper to the team and coach. Jerry performed his duties well and willingly. He has been with the team for three years and is now a senior. His job has been well done. For the last two years Berne has been competing against other teams in the county. Although we have never won a track meet, our teams have always made a fine showing in all of their meets. TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALL GAME For the second straight year the Berne Bear baseball team won the Tri-County championship. I he Bears finished the season with six wins and only one defeat. Berne is the only team to win a Tri-County championship. The Bears also established a new record by bringing across home plate 23 runs in one inning. Forty THERE'S MUSIC IN THE AIR The five active musical organizations in Berne-French High School this year are as follows: Band. Orchestra. A Cappella, Boys’ Glee Club, and Girls' Glee Club. Several students entered the Solo and Ensemble Contest which was held in Fort Wayne on February 18. Much work and practice must be exercised by each contestant in hopes that he or she will receive a high rating. Those receiving the Superior rating were: Ardus Beaty, Gretchen Bagley, Nancy Lehman, Marilyn Habegger, Diann Habegger, Patsy Bauserman, Leon Gould, Georgia Haccker, Alice Neuenschwander, and S lva Mazelin, piano solos. Jackie Nussbaum, baritone solo; Joan Lehman, clarinet solo; and a string quartet also received a Superior rating. Lena Nussbaum and Mary Fuhrer received Superior ratings on vocal selections. Everyone who received Superior ratings went to Indianapolis on March 25 for the State Contest. We are proud of all those who entered and we extend our congratulations to everyone who received a high rating. Forty-two AND THE BAND PLAYED ON— The Band has played an important role in our school this year. We have played for all the home ball games, P. T. A. meetings. Christmas program and also for the Spring Music Festival. In the early fall we marched for the Berne Fall Festival and at the Bluffton Street Fair. Wc also played for the Teacher’s Convention on October 27, at South Side High School in Ft. Wayne. The Band practices twice a week during school time and on Tuesday evenings at 6:30 regularly. This year our district contest is to be held at Hartford City and the state contest at Plymouth.. Our hopes are high for both of these contests. LOUIS No one but Papa wanted to move to New Y ork when Mr. Dodge gave him the promotion. All of mama's and the children's friends, including Ida, John, and Fred, were in St. Louis; and they didn't want to leave just when the wonderful World's Fair was about to open. Believe me. Grandpa and Katie weren't leaving. The girls, knowing that Mr. Dodge thought a man should be able to manage his own family, started to convince him that Papa was not the man for the New York Office. Tootie derailed a trolley by placing a dummy on the tracks, Agnes sang a shocking song in Mr. Dodge's presence and then defied her papa, Tootie bit Mr. Dodge on the leg, and Fsther dropped water bombs on both Mr. Dodge and Mr. Duffy. Needless to sav, Papa did not go to New York. In fact, he didn't even get to go to the office in St. Louis any more! Complications arose when Lucille from the Fast almost appropriated Lon from Ida and threatened to take John from Rose and Fred from Esther. Even though Mrs. Waughop, a fussy neighbor, and the trolley conductor thought the girls were a menace, they were really all right; and finally things righted themselves. Thanks to Rose. Papa was rehired at a larger salary; and the family remained in St. Louis. The Canteen also operated at the home ball games. Members of the class which were not on the team or in the high school band assisted in the work with Logan Sprunger, Eloise Smith, and Duane Lehman in charge. It is a non-profit, non-political, farm youth organization of voluntary membership. The F. F. A., as it is commonly known, is designed to take its place along with other agencies striving for the development of leadership, the building of a more permanent agriculture, and the improvement of country life. The Berne-French chapter of F. F. A. holds regular meetings monthly at which business matters arc discussed in an orderly fashion. Planned recreation is usually a part of the meeting. Officers selected for the first year were as follows: Doyle Lehman, President; Kenneth Isch. Vice President; Godfrey Bertsch. Secretary; Bill Kipfer.
