We have attempted to take from the hurricane of activities the most important events that will bring many fond memories of school days to all students. Christmas decorations. Christmas dinner. Junior beauties! Glee C1ub's out! Ten Right: Who did it? I mean stop! Mama and baby. No secrets, boys. w Of I 6555? 5 WE'VE DONE IT In the fall of 1945 the dreams of thirty-five students came true. Yes, we were finally in high schoo-l. For our officers we chose, Arlene Habegger, presidentg Ruth Inniger, vice presi- dentg Jack Lehman, secretaryg and Joe Wittwer, treasurer. For the girls a big event of the year was the initiation party which the senior girls gave us. We will never forget it. In October we had a class party in the gym. Later in the year we had a skating party at the Sunset skating rink. The next year we felt quite grown up for we were no longer ugreeniesv but were now dis- tinguished sophomores. Thomas Zehr was our president that year with Marjorie Rawley as vice presidentg Claudette Nagel, secretaryg and Frederick Sprunger, treasurer. We had another class party at the Sunset skating rink. We were juniors-upper classmen at last! Just one step from the top! For our class officers we chose Jack Lehman as presidentg Carol Sprunger, vice presidentg Arlene Habegger, secre- taryg and Tom Zehr, treasurer. We went to the CCC camp at Bluffton for a Hallowe'en party. For our class play we presented A Lucky Penny, and with the help of Mss Stone it was a great success. On May 7 we entertained the seniors at the junior-senior reception. Our decor- ations at the auditorium were beautiful. The food and program were enjoyed by all. Now we are Sophisticated Seniorsf' We chose as our officers Jack Lehman, presidentg Rob- ert Liechty, vice presidentg Fritz Sprunger, secretaryg and John Eichenberger, treasurer. Our class colors are Kelly green and white in which this annual has been bound. Our class flower is the Golden Rapture rose. For a class motto we have chosen, Dig for character, not for gold. We have decided to go to Chicago for our class trip. Another event this year was our class play l'Two's a Crowd. We wish to thank all of the teachers for their kindness, patience and help. We will re- member them and many other fond memories of our school years as we climb the ladder to success. Eighteen SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA JUNE 29, 1967 DISCOVERED GOLD STOP COME IMMEDIATELY STOP A 49ER HARRY ECKROTE JR. GOVERNOR OF CALIFORNIA This is really a big thrill for me, Anna Jane. This is my first plane ride. Oh, it is! This is a common thing for me. B the wa , have ou heard what an of our Y Y Y Y classmates have been doing? Yes, I just had a letter today from Sharon. She and Roselyn are now working in a big beauty house in New York. She also men- tioned that Claudette is now the secretary to the President of the famous Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. That's all very interesting, but it seems that we're at Chicago already and since it's time to eat, we'll land here. That's a good idea, but where shall we eat? That 'Dan's Hash House' across the street looks like a nice place. Let's go in. Here comes the proprietor Johnny Eichenberger himself. Hi, Johnny. How is everything since you left Berne?,' Just fine. Did you know that two of our former classmates who are now married are working for me? They are none other than Jack and Carol who are playing in my orches- tra here. Oh, yes, the old sweethearts of our class. Well it's time that we start on our way again. Goodbye. Say, Emma Jane, did you hear about the new scientific discovery made by Richard I-lirschy? He invented a rocket which goes to the sun without human control. I read about it in the paper the other day. NI think I did hear something about it. Speaking about discoveries reminds me of Ruth's discovery-a husband. I have heard that he is a great singer traveling with an evangelistic party and she has now joined him. It sounds like our classmates have all gone at things in a big way, doesn't it? This must be California already. This trip has certainly seemed short.- Maybe we had better head for the Governor's mansion to see what the gold rush is all about. i'That's a good idea. My, look at all the people around the capital. Something must really be going on. How strange, but the peo- ple all seem to be from the class of '49. This has turned out to be a gold rush of the class of '49. Over there is Delora Graber who is traveling from coast to coast with her husband who is a nationally known evangelist. Arlene I-labegger is also happily married but she and Vaughn are finding that a ministerls life is not such an easy one. Maggie has been married to her old flame who is now a history profes- sor at a midwestern University. Have you talked to any of the boys in our class, Anna Jane? Yes, and the boys haven't done bad for themselves either. Marvin now owns the largest garage in Los Angeles where he is do- ing big business, I hear. Somebody just now told me that Palmer I-leare has chosen the Army as his career and has done very well, too. l'le's now a captain. Merlin Lehman told me a little while ago that he has completed his fourth tour across the country as concert vi- olinist. Milton Lehman and Merlin Steiner seem to be having an interesting discussion on farming prospects for this year. Marjorie and Areta are right on the spot, though, to diagnos their case. These girls, besides being registered nurses have families of their own. It looks like Paul Weller has turned out to be the big business man in our class. Not only is he in big busi- ness, but he also teaches school on the side. I think our entire class has been represented here, hasnit it, Anna Jane? Yes, with the exception of two members who are both abroad. Tom Zehr is now di- rector of a famous choral group which is touring Europe at this time. The other mem- ber absent is Donna Mae Sprunger who de- cided that she liked her name well enough to keep it after she was married. She and her husband are serving as missionaries in South America. Our class has certainly lived up to its name of 49ers. Each member of our class has really dug for character rather than for gold. Heirs to the f' Throne The officers that were chosen to guide us through this year were our president, Ronald Townsend, aided by Ronald Krehbiel, vice president, LaMar Winteregg, secretary, Pauline Seesenguth, treasurer. We had proof of our upper classmen age in November when we received our class rings. On November 9 We presented for our class play Off a Pewter Platter which, under the direction of Miss Stone, was a great success: We had a class party November 24 in the school gym. Everyone had a wonderful time. Twenty-two Cn May 13 we played host to the seniors at the junior-senior reception. The girls are very happy because we have received many new boys in our class, which were very scarce in former years. November 22 we had a class party in the school gym. We all had a lot of fun. He has taught all of us the ways of good sportsmanship. Shuck has spent many long hours working with the boys in basketball and baseball and has come up with some fine records for Berne High School that will never be forgotten. OUR PLAYERS JOHN EICHENBERGER-A senior, played one of the regular guard positions. ujohn- ny', was a good scorer and an excellent re- bound man. This was his first year on the varsity. PAUL WELLER-A senior, played a guard position. Paul was a hard worker, and a good defensive man. This was his second year on the team. ROBERT LIECI-ITY-A senior, was the short- est player on the team. Jumbo had lots of fight and drive and when inserted into the line-up he usually came through with a goal. MERLIN STEINER--A senior, was one of the taller players. Merlie,' played as a re- serve center and helped a lor on rebounds. He had a lot of iight and determination. Although the Bears did not have much experience at Varsity basketball they were always in there fighting and never gave up until the gun cracked. They also lost a number of their ball games by close margins. The Bears participated in the New Year's Tourney and lost both games by close margins. In the Sectional the Bears defeated the Jefferson Warriors and then were defeated by the lvlonroe Bearkatz in the semi-finals. Rah! Rah! Rah! Rah! Forty-four YOUTH SINGS 1 This year our High School A Cappella Choir consists of seventy members. The choir has received quite a lot of recognition under the able direction of Mr. Freeman Burkhalrer. Last summer we were privileged to sing at the Youth for Christ International Con- ference at Winona Lake. We also sang at the Home Econo-mics section of the Northeastern Indiana Teachers' Con- vention. We have sung at many local events such as: PTA meetings, Farmers' Institute, Youth for Christ meetings, and special services at the Missionary and Reformed Churches. At Christmas we gave a Christmas Carol concert at the Mennonite Church and also sang over the tower from the church. Every year we prepare to sing at the contests and also at the Spring School Musical. They have played for all the home ball games, PTA meetings and PTA Carnival, Christmas School Musical and also for the Spring School Musical. Last summer we marched at the Firemen's Convention in Bourbon, Indiana. This fall we also marched at the Bluffton Street Fair and at the Berne Fall Festival. Ar the opening of the Festival we marched and maneuvered and then as a special event the Band was given a ride on the merry-go-round while playing another march. The Band will again be going to contest this year which is to be held in Hartford City, and we are also hoping to go to Auburn for the State Contest. IUNIORS ON THE STAGE The Juniors presented their play, Off a Pewter Platter on November The Dorns do not need to go to plays, espe:ially comedies, they have one running contin- uously in their living room! It might be called Life with Mother, for we see Urania Dorn gaily contaminating her family with contestitis. The disease spreads from perky old grandpa and his typing tests, little brother Buddy and his soap-box derby racer, Father and his mushroom hunt- ing, to Aggie, the maid, with her jingles. Even little sister Toots enters a clay-modelling contest. However, to Debbie, sixteen and social, the big contest is with her irresponsible family, and she is backed up by domineering Aunt Isabel. Debbie vents her anger on every member of her fam- ily which 'she thinks has ruined her social life and her romantic life with popular Stephen Ranes. Debbie even causes Davy, her twin brother to leale home. Debbie learns late, but not too late, that the big contest is the contest of life and the prize is happiness. It was given very well. When Dick, Patricia and Dorothy lvlaxwell find themselves absent of their mother, Patricia persuades her brother and sister to rent rooms to Tourists -thereby easing the family's supposed need for funds. Mamie Beggs, maid, cook, amateur detective and also one of the fun- niest characters you've ever met, refuses to become involved, but when the house is full of a great assortment of would-be tenants, Mamie involves everyone by suddenly developing a case of measles, which quarantines the whole crowd for two weeks. Although Mamie is sure the mys- terious Albert Wilson, his wife and glamorous daughter, Annabelle, are criminals, Annabelle becomes the unwilling means of bringing romance to Dorothy and Nlichael Street, a handsome, young guest. Finally, Patricia's love-lorn slave, red-headed Willie Peabody, also an unintended guest, stumbles on the key to the Wilson mystery and, just as Patricia decides people are pretty easy to get along with after all, a surprise ending brings the play to an unexpected, riotously funny climax.
