Our Yesterdays 1947 “ THROUGH THE KEY-HOLE” Foreword On this the fifteenth day of May, nineteen hundred and forty-seven we, the Senior Class of Berne High School, hold the great honor of being able once again to present you with the annual OUR YESTERDAYS. By reading this book we will recall many happy memories of our school days. We sincerely hope that you, too, will be able to do so. The thrill of entering high school, the various musical activities, the basketball games, our teachers, and finally the commencement exercises have all been very dear to us. We consider the many hours of labor spent on this book well worth our while. Our sole desire is that you will be pleased with it. 2 Dedication To the man who has led our team through thick and thin, and battles that seemed almost lost, we dedicate this annual. Yes, Mr. Ned Shuck has made a fine showing for himself the three years he has been here. The Berne Bears took the Sectional the first two years of his teaching in Berne, and showed fine sportsmanship when they lost this last Sectional. Mr. Shuck has been in there “pitching with the boys. He has boosted up their morale at several games and thus, they have come out with flying colors. The fellows all think a lot of Mr. Shuck. He’s not just a teacher, but he’s a friend to everyone he comes in contact with. He has been teaching the boys very well, and, in another year or two, we should have a “hot team once again. On the side line he also teaches social studies, but most of us think of him as Coach Shuck most of the time. Yes, he’s really got what it takes to put it across. We're all for you Mr. Shuck. Right Down: High School Art; Math Class; More Math; Assembly. Center: Biology. SENIOR CLASS HISTORY Back in 1943, thirty-one young freshman started their four year course in Berne High School. For our protection from the upper classmen, we chose as our officers, John Smith, president; Flossie Beer, vice-president; Mary Habegger, treasurer; and Alice Lehman, secretary. Our class sponsor was Miss Doris Brabender. We went through many trying things in this, our freshman year. It was all new to us, but we managed in the end. The next year we could discard the name “Freshie” and take on the new name of “Sophomore.” We were really proud of our new position in school life and did our best to live up to it. This year our class sponsor was Howard Burnett. Our class officers were Jerry Stucky as president, Vera Habegger as vice-president, and Max Habegger as secretary-treasurer. Our junior year was beginning to show some hope toward our success as students. Our class gave a play “Don’t Keep Him Waiting,” which was a hilarious comedy. As our class leaders of our upper classmen days we chose Jim Sprunger, president; John Smith, vice-president; Flossie Beer, secretary; and Vera Habegger, treasurer. This year we entertained the seniors in the month of May at the annual reception. We really decorated the gymnasium up very pretty. In our senior year we lived up to the name “Sophisticated Seniors” as best we could. True, we had our good times also, but we were generally a little more on the serious side this year. Our class leaders this year have b?en John Smith, president; Jim Sprunger, vice-president; Vera Habegger, secretary; and Alice Lehman, treasurer. For our entertainment we chose the play “A Date With Judy,” which was a roaring success With these memories of our years of school, our teachers, and all the hard work, we are ready to go on and continue to climb theladder of success. Our class officers for our final stretch of high school life were elected early in the fall. We, as her attorneys, have been commissioned to draw up a will, bestowing all her earthly effects upon her closest and most beloved schoolmates, teachers, and friends. Let us now listen to the reading of the Last Will and Testament of the Class of 1947. THE WILL We, the class of 1947, being of sound mind and memory, do make, publish, and declare this to be our last will and testament. To our teachers who have lead us through the years we do hereby bestow our gratitude, our everlasting memory, and the knowledge which we left in our books. To the freshman we will the right to advance out of the “green” into the sophomore year. To the sophomores we do hereby will the privilege of advancing into the upper class in knowing they will hold up the standards of Berne High. To the Juniors we bequeath all the Senior dignity which we have left behind, and also our worn out text books. I, Mary Kathryn Amstutz, bequeath my car to Marilyn Smith. I, Paul Baumgartner, will my musical talent to Willard Lehman. 1, Flossie Beer, will my ability to make friends and talk to people easily to Elsie Lehman. I, Roger Bcitler, bequeath my ability to tease all the girls, twelve years of age and above, to Roger Bixler. I, Rosemary Bcitler, will my ability to get expansion bracelets to anyone who proves lucky enough to manage it. I, Robert Burley, bestow all my manly charm on Duane Ellenberger. I. Beth Centz, bestow the ability to acquire high grades easily on all dumb students. I, Brice Fennig, will all the sophomore girls to Jim Shoemaker. (All but a certain, little dark-haired one, that is! ! ! !) I, Dessie Habegger, leave some of my height to Dorothy Bertsch in hoping that she will be able to use some of it. I, Max Habegger, leave my curly locks to Billy Barrett. I, Vera Habegger, leave a little of my pleasing personality and quietness to Betty Schug. I, Mildred Hartman, will my flirtatious manner to Ruth Inniger. I, Mary Hewitt, bestow my artistic abilities on Robert Huffman and Phyllis Kneuss. I, Howard Hirschy, leave my new attractive wave to Dick Feasel. I, Mona Lantz, bestow my rolling eyes on Cynthia Kirchhofer. I, Alice Lehman, bequeath my luck of getting rides to and from school to Willodean Bol-lenbacher. I, Larry Lehman, leave my ability to slide gently through school life to all in need of it. I. Stanley Luginbill, bestow my desire (?) to follow in my father’s professional footsteps to all others who should do the same. I, Altie Moyer, bequeath the honor of being the first of the class to have a diamond to Elaine Gilliom and Jane Kehrn. I. Mary Ellen Nusssbaum, leave my quiet nature and cheerfulness to Sally Hewitt. I, Dorothy Rutledge, will the extreme privilege of driving a shiny black car to school to Waneta Nussbaum. I, Coleen Schindler, will my ability to puli boners at the wrong time to Joan Moser. I, John Smith, leave my car for my sister's use once in awhile. I, Evelyn Sprunger, bestow my co-operative manner on Beverly Sprunger. I. Jim Sprunger, will my energetic ways to Judson Lehman. I, Julia Sprunger, will my love of “hosses” to Conrad Nagel. I, Sam Sprunger, leave to all future students the desire to get on the good side of Miss Blue (and stay there). I, Alverda Steiner, promise to lend my charming smile to my sister in future years. I, Jerry Stucky, leave my athletic ability to future basketball stars of Berne High. I, Margaret Webb, leave my ability to write long letters during school without getting caught to Maggie Lehman. I. Barbara Yoder, leave my first grade job to anyone who can’t handle high school studies. We do hereby constitute and appoint David Schwartz, president of the Junior Class as the sole executor of this, our very last will and testament. Schindler 22 CLASS PROPHECY One score, less ten years ago, Berne High School sent forth into this nation the class of ’47, crammed full of education and dedicated to bring forth glory to their Alma Mater. Now we are engaged in a great class reunion, seeing whether this classmate or that classmate, assembled from far and near, has succeeded. We are met at “Larry’s Gridiron” on Highway 27 on this night of our reunion. As we walk through the mirrored hall which leads to the spacious dining room we are met by the suave headwaiter, “Monk” Hirschy. As we are seated the lights dim, and in the spotlight we see Dorothy and Melvin still stepping the Arthur Murray way. Well, who is the center of attention over there? We break in and find it is none other than Julie Sprunger with a gang of male admirers eyeing her new frock. Thud! Oh, oh, a collision! Down to the floor goes a waitress under a shower of dishes, tray and all. Two people run to the rescue. Give her artificial respiration,” cries registered nurse Vera Habegger. Most emphatically no!” replies Dr. Stucky. “Presumably her tibia has constrained her fibula to emerge through her epidermis.” Wait a minute! Maybe it’s my case,” shouts mortician, Max Habegger. The ringing notes of a piano bring silence to the room again as Maestro Paul Baumgartner favors us with “Polonaise,” the favorite of our high school days. What are Altie and Alice so engrossed in? By the expression on their faces one can plainly see that it is a deep discussion of today’s domestic problems Our attention is now being drawn to the Master of Ceremonies, Jim Sprunger, who these days divides his time between a little printing shop and the “muck”. He announces that the reunion is complete except for two members, Robert Burley, now a missionary in Africa; and Coleen Schindler who is being busied by a blessed event. Roger Beitler changes the atmosphere considerably. Since he deals with an economics class each day, he looks at things economically and says, “If we would consume some food from the producer my appetite would stop pestering me.” The dinner commences and we enjoy a delicious concoction which was discovered by Dessie Habegger in her daily routine of farm chores. It just so happens that a naughty chicken got in her way and caused her to spill the milk in the chicken hash. Mona Sue and Mary Hewitt are slyly devoting their attention to transforming their paper napkins into airplanes. It must be the influence of their elementary school pupils who perform such acts in their kindergarten classes. John Smith, president of Smith Brothers, still vacations in Michigan each summer. We hear him relating some of his tall fish stories to his neighbor, engineer Fennig. Painter Stanley Luginbill, who also has an ear in the discussion thinks Mr. Smith tends to color his story a bit. Beth Centz leisurely sits back in her chair, undoubtedly recalling her globetrotting experiences for a large newspaper. We see Sam Sprunger lazily draped over a chair still in a daze even after graduating from Goshen College. His better half surely must be of some assistance in bringing him down from the clouds. Math Teacher Webb sits debating whether her class is perpendicular to the radius or if it equals the square of the hypotenus. These figures surely do get a person down. Across the room we see Flossie Beer who has just flown in from the city where she appears daily on the radio programs, Jethro’s Other Wife and Hearts in Discord. Rosie Beitler demonstrates to her friend, Barbara Yoder, a new way of handling her horse’s canter but she still thinks a Chevrolet rides smoother and therefore uses it to haul her family of three around town. Barbara changes the subject and states that she really isn’t sorry that she completed her nurse’s training even if she did get married the day after graduation. The conversation continues along domestic lines as their neighbor Evelyn Sprunger says that she enjoys being the wife of a pilot. We hear neither complaints nor remarks from quiet Mildred Hartman but we know she is satisfying the empty stomachs of the patrons at the bigger Palmer House. Conversation is now broken by the announcement of a vocal solo by Mary Ellen Nuss-baum who was recently soprano soloist for the presentation of Handel’s Messiah. Mary K. excuses herself and leaves early to tend to her youngest son who has the mumps. It seems that the majority of the girls have turned to the most common and suitable profession for women, homemaking, as Alverda Steiner shows by her discussion of a new bungalow complete with nursery. With the singing of the Berne High School song we part from our old friends, confident that the success of all the classmates, the entertainment by our classmates, and the renewing of friendships with our classmates shall not perish from our memory. We Rule Next Year We started our junior year with enthusiasm to make a new record for ourselves. We have done our best to achieve our goal set before us. For our first class play we gave, “Every Family Has One,” under the direction of Miss Blanche Stone This play proved to be a hilarious success. Oh, the troubles that were brought out in that play! For our political standpoint we think we have done pretty well for ourselves. We chose David Schwartz, president; Marilyn Smith, vice president; Arthur Muselman, secretary; and Waneta Nussbaum, treasurer. These officers have shown themselves worthy of our choice. This year we published one issue of the school paper “The Berne Bear Facts.” We hope that the juniors of next year will also publish this paper. It proved interesting reading for everyone, including teachers. On May 9, we entertained the seniors at the annual reception. Everyone was all dressed in their pretty formals and neat pressed suits. A good program was given for the seniors and delicious food was served. Good luck to all future juniors! 24 We’ re Nearly J uniors As sophomores, we chose Thomas Zehr for our president. He was supplemented by Marjorie Rawley as vice president. Claudette Nagel as secretary, and Frederick Sprunger as treasurer. These officers have proven to be very capable of their positions. As a class we want to encourage all future sophomores to make the best of their school days and to keep the name of sophomore in glory. Don’t worry, freshmen, we aren’t going to wear out all the teachers for you. Remember, they have a whole summer to recuperate back to their normal strength for you. The sophomores worked up a play to present to the student body. It will provide us with some experience for our junior and senior years. We acquired the name of freshman. We have elected LaMar Wnteregg as president, Waneta Zimmerman as vice president, Duane Lehman as secretary, and Joan Moser as treasurer. We don't let the name “Green Freshies” bother us for we are striving to make our class the most exciting that the Berne School has ever had. We had a very good start toward our goal, too, for we had an enjoyable party at the C. C. C. Camp. We hope that all our parties will be as good as this one was. We are looking forward to our next three years in high school with great anticipation. We are ready to discard our present positions in hopes that the eighth grade will enjoy it as much as we have. There are several smaller groups within the larger ones. Among them are a String Quartette, a Clarinet Quartette, Woodwind Quintette, and a Girls’ Trio. On January 20, 1947, the music department sponsored a program at the Berne Auditorium by students of Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. They gave us a short program at the school also. The Band, Orchestra. A Cappella. Girls’ Glee Club, augmented by a Junior Choir from the grades gave a very fine Christmas program to a small but appreciative audience. Another musical program is to be given in April sometime after the District Contest. On March 29, 1947, there was a State Solo and Ensemble Contest at C. C. H. S. in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The following events were entered: several piano solos, a violin solo, two vocal solos, a string ensemble, a clarinet quartette, and a woodwind quintette. BAND Last summer the band started having rehearsals again during the summer months. We hope that this will improve our band. They gave several concerts and marched for a Fireman’s Convention. During this school year the band marched for the Annual Colt Show in October. Also they gave their untiring service for each basket ball game. Early in February they played for a Lyceum program and in March a Youth for Christ Rally. ORCHESTRA The orchestra, composed of forty-three members, practiced three times a week— twice, full orchestra and once, string section. Under the excellent instruction of Mr. Burkhalter the orchestra has made a lot of progress since the beginning of the school year. Several of the members entered in the All-District orchestra, which played for the Northeastern Indiana Teachers’ Association at Ft. Wayne in October. The recording that the members of this large orchestra made were played over the radio. Places where the orchestra has performed are: the junior and senior class plays and the school programs. As several members of the orchestra played in the All-District orchestra, so also, he entire A Cappella sang with the All- District Chorus. The stage of the Quimby Audi-orium was filled to capacity with seven hundred students from this area, who sang n this large choir. The choir, as did the orchestra, performed for the Northeastern ndiana Teachers Association in Fort Wayne. Here a recording was also made and ilayed over the radio. The A Cappella sang for a Youth for Christ Rally and two P. T. A. meetings. GLEE CLUB This year in place of the Training Chorus, which formerly met on Monday and Tuesday mornings of each week, the Girls’ Glee Club was reorganized. The Girls’ Glee Club sang for the Christmas program. We hope that someday there will again be a Boys’ Glee Club in Berne High School. Yes, it was a great job with many things included — picture taking, copy-writing. typing, financing and cooperation from all. It is our desire that this annual be a success due to our endless efforts of planning, preparing it, and watching it grow. The many hours that we have spent have been a pleasure for us, as we hope the annual will also be for you. BOOSTER CLUB The Booster Club, which was organized in ’45, stands for the sole purpose of boosting the members of Berne High. During basketball season, the club not only boosted the teams, but also had charge of the concession stand, the profit being used for Booster Club Pins awarded each year to the new members. H. S. this year! The cheerleaders, thinking Berne should have a better yelling section, started the Cheering Club. Any student in High School or Junior High School may become a member of this club if they put their whole heart and spirit into yelling at the games. Special pep sessions were held throughout the year where new yells were taught to the club. They in turn would yell these yells for the rest of the high school at the regular pep sessions in order to have a better yelling section. Thus, the yells were learned much more rapidly. LATIN CLUB Miss Beth Blue, Latin teacher, started the Latin Club several years ago. The club is composed of first and second year Latin students. The club is a state organization and many schools throughout the state of Indiana have a club much the same as the one here in Berne High. The new members may purchase a pin which signifies their membership. This year the second year students enjoyed a three course dinner at the school. The second year students also initiate the first year students into the club each year. The play takes place in the home of the Reardons, a typical American family, who are really normal, but hilarious. Laura, the mother, is a social climber who tells tales about her glorious ancestry. She is very happy because she thinks she has finally matched her attractive daughter, Marcia, with wealthy Sherwin Parker. Penelope, the youngest Reardon, is rather bothersome with her sling-shot and piano. Warry, the only son, is positive he is the coming Eugene O’Neill. Mr. Reardon would rather tinker with an automobile than anything else, and Nana, the wise-cracking grandmother, is only interested in Bing Crosby and getting rid of the Parkers, who have come to visit them. An upset occurs when cousin Lily decides to come to the wedding—but what a surprise when another Lily appears. At least Warry, who fell in love with her, became happy. Because of Nana’s witty brain and with the help of Lily, the Parkers finally fled, leaving Marcia with the boy she really loves, Todd Galloway. So Nana turns back to her Crosby records and the whole family is once again a happy one. Senior Class Play Miss Beth Blue, teacher of English and Latin, directed the senior class play, A Date with Judy. The play was based on the radio story by the same name. Although it took a lot of patience and endurance on Miss Blue's part, she did a wonderful job. Julia Sprunger A DATE WITH JUDY A delightful comedy A Date with Judy,” was given by the seniors this year. Maybe it was a little hair-raising to follow Judy Foster and her friends, but everything finally turns out fine. The play starts out with Judy and her friend, Barbara, trying to beat Tootsie Whiteman out of being queen at their club party, bv earning money for the Community Relief Fund. But since Mr. and Mrs. Foster are both opposed to their ideas, they don’t seem to get very far. When Barbara turns against her. Judy calls on Mitsie Hoffman for help. Together they enter contests, write a story, and make a failure out of everything. Oogie Pringle doesn’t seem to appeal to Judy till the night of the party, since boys her age seem so “young.” One bright idea after another comes to Judy’s mind. They involve Mr. Martindale, a Broadway producer, who is sick of Broadway and also Mrs. Shlutzhammer of the P. T. A. who gets the wrong speech. During the mixup Mrs. Hotchkiss plus Eloise, her daughter, decide to pay a visit to the Fosters and make everything worse. Randolph, Judy's younger brother, is the comedy of the play. He hates girls till good-looking Rex O'Connor brings his sister, Susie, over to see him. Surely it was fate that brought little Susie to Randolph! Hannah, the maid, has a good heart even though she is prone to lose her temper at times. Although things seem never to come back to normal, Judy finally becomes oueen but only by sheer luck. Once again life is wonderful! Oh but we mustn't forget Mr. Foster, who has a flat tire to contend with. But Oogie and Judy go merrily on their way to the party and so he doesn't mind that so badly. Basketball Squad 1946-47 The 1946-47 team was composed largely of boys who had no previous varsity experience. The team was also small with no player exceeding the six foot mark. What they lacked in height had to be made up by team play, individual cleverness and speed. The following is the roster for the 1947 team of four seniors and six juniors. JERRY STUCKY—A veteran of three years’ varsity experience. He played center and was especially adapted at retrieving rebounds from both bankboards. He was also an excellent defensive player and scored his share of points. Stucky is a senior and played on two sectional championship teams. JOHN SMITH—a veteran of two years of varsity experience. He and Stucky served as co-captains of the team. Smith was probably the best defensive player on the team and also held up his end of the scoring. Ilis favorite shot was a •‘one-hander around the foul circle. He is a senior and played a regular guard position. MAX HABEGGER—had no previous varsity experience but improved rapidly during the year. He got his share of defensive rebounds and also offensive rebounds. His favorite shot was a one handed push shot from out in front. Max is a senior and played one of the regular guard positions. SAM SPRUNGER—another senior with no previous varsity experience. Sammy was a hard worker and a very agres-sive player. Playing at a forward position, he was very successful in faking and dribbling around his defensive opponent for a short or layup shot. He was a part-time regular and a most valuable reserve. LARRY LIECHTY—a junior, held down one of the regular forward positions although he played guard manv times. Larry is a fine passer and a good shooter. He should develop into an excellent scorer and team player in his senior year. All he needs is more experience. DAVID SCHWARTZ—a junior became the other regular forward at the close of the season. He is one of the steadiest players on the team and makes very few mistakes. He is a good defensive player and is improving rapidly in scoring. What he lacks in size is overcome by his determination. DUANE ELLENBERGER—another junior was a most valuable substitute forward and played in almost every game. Duane didn’t score much but played a fine defensive game around the basket. He was a good team player and should develop into an offensive threat next year. LEROY SPRUNGER—a junior and is the smallest player on the team. LeRov is a eood shot and a hard driver. When he was inserted into the line-up he seemed to add pop and zeal to the whole team. He should be a very valuable and a good scoring guard next season CHARLES McCRORY—a junior who did most of his playing this year on the second team and was usually the high scorer. Charlie” has a lot of drive and determination which a good ball player needs. He plays a guard position and will improve in another season. JAMES SHOEMAKER—played regular center on the second team most of the time. But when inserted into the first team line-up usually did a good job of rebounding and ball handling. Jim was not a high scorer but he fed to the boys who did score. He is a junior. RONALD KREHBIEL—as a freshman who saw occasional first team action and shows promising for the next three years. Walter Graber. Coach Shuck. Second Team When the Berne Cubs wound up their schedule this year they had a record of five wins and fourteen losses. This record may not seem too impressive but it provided the underclassmen with the much needed experience that it takes to make good teams in the future. The Cubs were composed of mainly underclassmen except for three Juniors who played a part-time role. On December 14, the Cubs participated in a second team tourney held at Portland. Winchester defeated the Cubs by a score of 25 to 16. From the Cubs, Coach Shuck will be able to draw the material that will build some fine teams in the next few years. 55 INTRAMURALS Berne High provides an intramural league for the purpose of providing those who do not take part in varsity competition, with some form of exercise. This years league was composed of four teams. At the end of the season a tourney was held. In this game the Whites defeated the Reds 45 to 22 for the Championship. 56 BASEBALL ’46 - ’47 The Berne Bears had a very successful season, winning all nine of their games. The Bears will lose only two players through graduation this spring. These two players are Jerry Stucky and Roger Bcitler. The starting nine were: catcher, C. McCrory; pitcher, D. Ellenberger; first base, J. Stucky; second base, L. Sprunger; third base, R. Beitler; shortstop, D. Schwartz; left field, L. Liechty; center field, A. Muselman; right field, R. Liechty.
