This Is Why---------- We Seniors of 1941 have endeavored to show you life in our school as it actually exists. The teachers at work, the activities we enjoy, the sports we play, and classes we attend are all pictured so that you may see Berne High School in action. As students move through life, there will be many times that they will look longingly back to their school days. Pictures, snaps, comments, and explanations, all will help to recall the days gone by. After all, this annual is really your memory book, and here we hope you will find memory sketches you will never forget. Our Yesterdays, 1941, is presented in the form of a letter from the Class of ’41 to all of you. This letter is divided into four main parts: the administration; the activities; the sports; and the classes. We have arranged the sections in this order because we feel that this is the order in which they appear in our school year. Things really start with the teachers and faculty. As soon as we have settled to routine, the different literary and musical groups are organized. A little later the athletics take the center of the stage. Finally, the classes, about which the school revolves, begin to see the day of final report cards. Each pupil then feels he has climbed another rung on his way to the “top.” The seniors see the diplomas, caps and gowns, and the life ahead of them. Just as you will find this book recalling happy memories from your school life, so shall we in the future years find this book a happy reminder of “Our Yesterdays.” 2

To You - - - This issue of “Our Yesterdays” is dedicated to Freeman Burkhalter, in appreciation of the time and effort which he has so unselfishly given in developing the musical talent in the Berne Schools during these past years. We wish to expiess in this manner our sincere thanks to him for the hours he has spent with us, both in and out of school, and for the help he has given in enabling us to enjoy playing, singing, and listening to good music. 3
