Our Cheer Leaders Marie Schwartz Merlin Stucky Isabel Schug Thomas Sprungf.r Here Comes The Team The Bears started the season this year with a new coach, “Lakie” Glendening, who came to Berne from Albion. He was not employed until a short time before the opening of school. Because of this he had no time to work with the basketball team in advance of the season. As a result of this the Bears opened up the season lacking a knowledge of his type of playing. After a rather dismal start the Bears started to come along rapidly, and by the end of the season were winning their share of games. In the sectional tournament it was again the Bears’ luck to draw their rivals, Decatur, in the first game. Berne was defeated by three points. The Bears finished the season with a record of 8 games won and 13 lost. This record was made against schools of much larger enrollment then Borne. The starting five usually consisted of E. Habegger, McKean, G. Habegger, Baumgartner, and Lieehty, with Schwartz, and C. Habegger contributing much to help the Bears along. L. L. GLENDENING, Coach—'‘‘Lakie” to us, deserves much credit, for it was no easy task to come into a new school and coach a new team. He worked as one of us, not as one above. His swell personality combined with his good sense has won our admiration and respect. We are proud to have him as our coach. ROY SCHWARTZ, Captain-elect, a good team player and hard worker. Although sacrificed in many games for height, he made no complaints. A good sport, never shot when a teammate had a better chance. We’ll miss him.—L. L. G. LYNN LIECHTY—In the “thick” of everything, a good offensive man and a “pillar of strength” on defense. He developed into one of the best of pivot men. Handled the ball cleverly and could hit the “bucket.” Third high scorer of the season. Just developing—too bad he is graduating.—L. L. G. GLENN HABEGGER—Glenn’s first try at varsity ball, developed rapidly. His height was a decided asset to the team. He was “regular” in every way. We could use him next year.—L. L. G. 24

Athletics What would a school be without athletics? “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” So it is that sports in the school not only build up the school spirit and pride but also furnish a means of strengthening the physical bodies. Sports encourage clean play and cooperation. Can we not say that athletics are indeed worth while? 23

Go Get 'em, Berne Bears ROBERT McKEAN—A fast, clever ball handler, plenty of ability and an eye for the basket. Lack of experience his greatest liability, speed his greatest asset. A good man.—L. L. G. HOWARD BAUMGARTNER—One of DICK LEHMAN—A freshman who came along rapidly toward the close of the season, joining the Bears for the last few games. A great underbasket man who will score many points next year. You will be hearing much of this boy the next three years. Berne’s leading scorers this year, should do still better next year. The best defensive man the team had, he saciificed many points by playing backguard this year. A junior this year, he and Habegger should form the nucleus for next year’s team. EARL HABEGGER—The other leading scorer of the tarn this year was this speed boy. The fastest man on the team with a never-give-up spirit. Always in the game for all he had, his favorite trick was to steal the ball and dribble the length of the floor to score. You'll see a lot of him next year. JOHN SPRUNGER—Only a sophomore who was of much value to the team late in the season. Teaming up with Dick Lehman next year, he should be of great value to the Bears. Very tricky under the basket, what he lacks in size he makes up cleverness. CLIFF HABEGGER—A sophomore who came to Berne from Monroe and proved invaluable to the Bears. A great scrapper with grand team spirit, will probably team in with Lehman, Sprunger, E. Habegger, and Baumgartner, to complete next year’s team. RAYMOND MAZELIN—Although not much of a scorer, he is a great help on defense and rebounding. His experience with the Cubs this year should help him next year. One of the biggest men on the squad. As he is a junior this year, next year will be his last year. JIM BIXLER—Last, but not least, our manager. ‘‘Bix” proved to be a faithful manager always unruffled and pulling for the Bears. Only a sophomore, he will be around yet for two more years. 25
