In Grand Old Switzerland On March 21 and 22 the A Cappella Choir gave the operetta “In Grand Old Switzerland. The cast was as follows: Herr Nopps Herr Bolliger Julie Trudie Mrs. Miller Norbert Nyffeler Edw. Eichenberger Deryll Sprunger Gyneth Schindler Vera Nussbaum Donna John Hans -Fritz - Swiss Bovs and Girls Marjorie Habegger Daniel Eichenberger Palmer Liechty Earl Habegger - A Cappella Choir Herr Nopps, a mountain guide, and Herr Bolliger, a famous clockmaker, lived side by side in a little town in Switzerland. Trudie, the daughter of Herr Bolliger, and Julie, the son of Herr Nopps, were very much in love with each other. The fathers of these two opposed this and always tried to keep them apart. One day Mrs. Miller, an American travelling in Switzerland with her son and daughter, arrived at the homes of Herr Nopps and Herr Bolliger. Throughout this whole visit Trudie and Julie were kept away from each other as much as possible. Finally Trudie and Julie decided to run away to America with Mrs. Miller and her son and daughter. When their fathers heard about it they were very much dismayed and decided to tell Trudie and Julie the truth.—The truth was that it was all a game they were playing just to encourage Julie and Trudie in their love affair. So Julie and Trudie remain in Switzerland and Mrs. Miller and her children also lengthen their visit. The girls and boys of Switzerland, including Hans and Fritz who were very simple, were friends of Trudie and Julie. 19

There's Music In The Air Music has been called the universal language, and it may well be so called. For without music, how could we better express ourselves in moments of joy, or how could we better sooth our feelings in moments of sorrow and affliction? The man that hath no music in himself Nor is not moved with concord of sweet sounds Is fit for treason, stratagems, and spoils. So what would our school life be like if we would have no music whatsoever? We are indeed fortunate that our school is not deprived of this as some schools are. This year we have seven different musical organizations: High School Band, High School Orchestra, Beginners’ Band, Intermediate Band, Bovs’ and Girls’ Glee Clubs, and A Cappella Choir. Some pupils are in more than one of these organizations and are kept quite busy. However, upon being asked they would say that they would never give up what they have learned or the good times they have had. For we do have good times too (sometimes at the expense of our conductor) as well as a lot of hard work. On November 28 these different organizations gave a musical concert in the gymnasium of the school building. This spring we are again going to the band and orchestra contests. Some of the boys and girls went to the district solo and ensemble contest at Butler on March 29. Among those that won first division were: Harriet Sprunger, cornet soloist; a flute trio com- posed of Marie Schwartz, Marjorie Habegger and Pauline Girod; and a brass sextet composed of Bette Graber, Carmen Lehman, Harriet Sprunger, Norbert Nyffeler, Howard Baumgartner, and Edward Eichenberger, Jr. On April 1st these participants went to the state contest held at LaPorte. Here the flute trio again won first division and is going to the national contest at Flint, Michigan, on May 14 and 15. Elsie Jane Stauffer will also compete in this contest as piano soloist. Having won first in the national contest last year, she goes directly to the national this year. The band and orchestra contest was held on April 26 at Converse. Winning first, they went to the state contest at Hartford City on May 5. The orchestra members will go to the national contest at Flint, Michigan, on May 14 and 15, the same time as the national solo and ensemble contest. This year there is no national band contest. On Feb. 25th the different musical organizations again gave a musical concert in the gym; and on April 22 the Annual Spring Music Festival was presented, which also included the first grade rhythm band. On May 6 Berne again took part in the Ball State Music Festival at Muncie. The Girls’ Glee Club and High School Band are the two organizations that represented us this year. On May 10 the A Cappella Choir attended the Spring Choral Festival at North Side High School. Each school sang two numbers, and for a finale all the groups sang four numbers in a mass group. 18
