Indiana This Is Why---------- We Seniors of 1941 have endeavored to show you life in our school as it actually exists. The teachers at work, the activities we enjoy, the sports we play, and classes we attend are all pictured so that you may see Berne High School in action. As students move through life, there will be many times that they will look longingly back to their school days. Pictures, snaps, comments, and explanations, all will help to recall the days gone by. After all, this annual is really your memory book, and here we hope you will find memory sketches you will never forget. Our Yesterdays, 1941, is presented in the form of a letter from the Class of ’41 to all of you. This letter is divided into four main parts: the administration; the activities; the sports; and the classes. We have arranged the sections in this order because we feel that this is the order in which they appear in our school year. Things really start with the teachers and faculty. As soon as we have settled to routine, the different literary and musical groups are organized. A little later the athletics take the center of the stage. Finally, the classes, about which the school revolves, begin to see the day of final report cards. Each pupil then feels he has climbed another rung on his way to the “top.” The seniors see the diplomas, caps and gowns, and the life ahead of them. Just as you will find this book recalling happy memories from your school life, so shall we in the future years find this book a happy reminder of “Our Yesterdays.” 2 To You - - - This issue of “Our Yesterdays” is dedicated to Freeman Burkhalter, in appreciation of the time and effort which he has so unselfishly given in developing the musical talent in the Berne Schools during these past years. We wish to expiess in this manner our sincere thanks to him for the hours he has spent with us, both in and out of school, and for the help he has given in enabling us to enjoy playing, singing, and listening to good music. 3 Berne School B. H. S. SONG Hail to thee! Thou dear old home of schools. All honor, laud and praises e’er to thee we’ll sing: And glory to thy halls, forever shall we bring. Till far and wide shall be the fame of Berne High School. Ilail to thee! Thou dear old white and blue. Our colors we will ever love and ne’er disgrace; We’ll win in every fight and prove our spirit true, And all shall see thy name in every honored place. Then hail! all hail! to thee evermore. Thv name shall be remembered through the ages o’er and o’er. We’ll strive for our best and be faithful, just and true, All honor we shall bring our colors white and blue. B. H. S. There are many activities in the Berne Schools. Different organizations help the pupils to meet new situations and form new friendships. Our activities are carried out with the purpose of teaching each of us how to get along with others, and to enjoy the company of our classmates. What would school be like without these friendships? 9 Let The Blame Fall On Us Putting out this annual was not simply a matter of slipping a few snapshots between two covers. Everything had to be carefully planned, from the first word to the last picture. Pictures had to be taken and arranged. Accurate information had to be gathered and written up. Every page had to be completely accounted for. This year’s annual staff has tried to give you an informal, realistic view of school life. Informality is an outstanding characteristic of young people. It is this characteristic which we have tried to show to you. Editor - Edward H. Eichenberger Associate Editor - Gyneth Schindler Business Manager - Deryll B. Bette Graber, Ardythe Luginbill, Kathleen Inniger The first program was given in commemoration of Thanksgiving, the theme being “America’s Thanksgiving.” Twelve costumed people representing all walks of life expressed their thanks by talks, poems, musical reading, singing, and other special music. “Ancient, Medieval, and Modern Christmas” was the theme for the second program. The “First Christmas” was given in playlet form. The origin of medieval and modern customs was also given. “Outdoor Indiana” in our third program took us closer to nature as we visited the various State Parks. It was a Boy Scout meeting, and the Scouts wore all in uniform. The last program, “He Made America Sing,” gave the life of Stephen Foster in the form of a radio program. Foster’s many beautiful songs were given as musical numbers. 12 We Come - - Straggling In Deryll Sprunger. Roger Luginbill. James Goodin. Ronald Lehman Marie Schwartz. Vera Balsiger. Ardus Gene Sprunger. Elsie Jane Stauffer ARENA The theme of the first program was “Stars and Stripes,” which was given in the form of a playlet. As Betsy Ross sewed on the first flag and reminisced, the various numbers occurred. The second program “For Auld Lang Syne” gave us the story of the development and early life of Berne. Sketches, pictures, and many relics were on display. “A Plantation Party,” the third program, brought us a bit of the background and life of the negroes. Bales of straw, lanterns, a little organ, and the painted “darkies” with their southern dialect all added to the interest of the program The fourth program about Abraham Lincoln was divided into three acts: The first, “Lincoln’s Boyhood”; second, “His Love Affair”; and last “His Assassination.” This program was quite different from the rest, for a stage was set in one corner of the gym floor and the entire program was given in pantomime form. Although the Arenas did not receive the cup this year, they did try very hard and presented good programs and will in the future remember their motto, Excelsior. 13 Freckles Senior Class Play Freckles, our plucky young hero - Mrs. Walt Duncan (Sarah), who befriends Freckles Walt Duncan, her husband ..... Jr. Kathleen Inniger Pat Sprunger Deryll Sprunger James Sprunger Vera Nussbaum Robert McKean Lucille Sprunger June Fogelsoncer The action of the play takes place in the interior of the Duncan homestead in the midst of the Limber-lost country in Indiana. Here Harvey McLean operates a large lumber mill. To the Duncan house comes a lad named -Freckles.” That is the only name he had ever known. When just a baby he was placed in an orphanage and has been at the mercy of strangers all his life. When he is sent from the orphanage to work for a man who abuses and mistreats him he rebels and escapes in the middle of the night, determined to pursue his own course and make a new life for himself. He learns that McLean is hard pressed to find a man to guard his valuable trees and tackles the lumber owner for the job. McLean is loath to hire the boy because of his youth, but Freckles soon convinces him of his capabilities and because of his pluck and fearlessness he wins McLean over completely within a short time. But there are two men who work in the lumber camp who conspire against Freckles. They are Freddy Wessner and Black Jack, and they plan on stealing some of McLean's most valuable trees. They approach Freckles and ask him to join up with them but he remains faithful to his trust, refusing to have a hand in anything dishonest. In protecting McLean's interest Freckles almost loses his life but he manages to frustrate the clever plans of the timber thieves. In the end the mystery surrounding Freckles’ birth is cleared up in a startling and unexpected fashion. Freckles is then free to marry the girl of his choice. Angel, whom he calls his “swamp angel.” Since the author of the book. Freckles.” from which this play was taken, is Gene Stratton Porter who lived only about five miles from Berne, this comedy was especially enjoyed. 14 Welcome Home, Jimmy Mrs. Brooks, almost blind, who rents the Coolridge farm - LaVerda Sprunger Lucille Brooks, her daughter - - Ardythe Luginbill Peggy Sommers, a sixteen-year-old neighbor of Mrs. Brooks - Berneta Liechty Danny Banks, another neighbor, seventeen years old - Harold Nussbaum Val Gardner, a young lawyer - Howard Baumgartner Chesterfield McSwope, a friend of Val’s with nothing to do in particular. He and his bosom friend. Chesterfield McSwope, came to the Coolridge farm to tell Mrs. Brooks that her son Jimmy is in jail, but, because Mrs. Brooks is nearly blind and hasn’t seen her son for 15 years, she mistakes Val for her son. Val, seeing how happy he has made her, decides to stay and pose as her son. Melinda Preston, an old maid with a string of campaigns but no conquests to her credit, nearly breaks Val’s plans. Meanwhile Val gets Jimmy out of jail and falls in love with Allie Thomas, a pretty school teacher, who makes her home with Mrs. Brooks, and Chess does the same with Mrs. Brooks’ daughter, Lucille. Allie promises Val to marry him with the Coolridge farm included. This three-act comedy was given on October 22, 1940, and was thoroughly enjoyed by the public. For without music, how could we better express ourselves in moments of joy, or how could we better sooth our feelings in moments of sorrow and affliction? The man that hath no music in himself Nor is not moved with concord of sweet sounds Is fit for treason, stratagems, and spoils. So what would our school life be like if we would have no music whatsoever? We are indeed fortunate that our school is not deprived of this as some schools are. This year we have seven different musical organizations: High School Band, High School Orchestra, Beginners’ Band, Intermediate Band, Bovs’ and Girls’ Glee Clubs, and A Cappella Choir. Some pupils are in more than one of these organizations and are kept quite busy. However, upon being asked they would say that they would never give up what they have learned or the good times they have had. For we do have good times too (sometimes at the expense of our conductor) as well as a lot of hard work. On November 28 these different organizations gave a musical concert in the gymnasium of the school building. This spring we are again going to the band and orchestra contests. Some of the boys and girls went to the district solo and ensemble contest at Butler on March 29. Among those that won first division were: Harriet Sprunger, cornet soloist; a flute trio com- posed of Marie Schwartz, Marjorie Habegger and Pauline Girod; and a brass sextet composed of Bette Graber, Carmen Lehman, Harriet Sprunger, Norbert Nyffeler, Howard Baumgartner, and Edward Eichenberger, Jr. On April 1st these participants went to the state contest held at LaPorte. Here the flute trio again won first division and is going to the national contest at Flint, Michigan, on May 14 and 15. Elsie Jane Stauffer will also compete in this contest as piano soloist. Having won first in the national contest last year, she goes directly to the national this year. The band and orchestra contest was held on April 26 at Converse. Winning first, they went to the state contest at Hartford City on May 5. The orchestra members will go to the national contest at Flint, Michigan, on May 14 and 15, the same time as the national solo and ensemble contest. This year there is no national band contest. On Feb. 25th the different musical organizations again gave a musical concert in the gym; and on April 22 the Annual Spring Music Festival was presented, which also included the first grade rhythm band. On May 6 Berne again took part in the Ball State Music Festival at Muncie. The Girls’ Glee Club and High School Band are the two organizations that represented us this year. On May 10 the A Cappella Choir attended the Spring Choral Festival at North Side High School. Each school sang two numbers, and for a finale all the groups sang four numbers in a mass group. 18 In Grand Old Switzerland On March 21 and 22 the A Cappella Choir gave the operetta “In Grand Old Switzerland. The cast was as follows: Herr Nopps Herr Bolliger Julie Trudie Mrs. Miller Norbert Nyffeler Edw. Eichenberger Deryll Sprunger Gyneth Schindler Vera Nussbaum Donna John Hans -Fritz - Swiss Bovs and Girls Marjorie Habegger Daniel Eichenberger Palmer Liechty Earl Habegger - A Cappella Choir Herr Nopps, a mountain guide, and Herr Bolliger, a famous clockmaker, lived side by side in a little town in Switzerland. Trudie, the daughter of Herr Bolliger, and Julie, the son of Herr Nopps, were very much in love with each other. The fathers of these two opposed this and always tried to keep them apart. One day Mrs. Miller, an American travelling in Switzerland with her son and daughter, arrived at the homes of Herr Nopps and Herr Bolliger. Throughout this whole visit Trudie and Julie were kept away from each other as much as possible. Finally Trudie and Julie decided to run away to America with Mrs. Miller and her son and daughter. When their fathers heard about it they were very much dismayed and decided to tell Trudie and Julie the truth.—The truth was that it was all a game they were playing just to encourage Julie and Trudie in their love affair. So Julie and Trudie remain in Switzerland and Mrs. Miller and her children also lengthen their visit. The girls and boys of Switzerland, including Hans and Fritz who were very simple, were friends of Trudie and Julie. 19 And The A Cappella Choir First Row—Elsie Jane Stauffer, Pauline Girod, Berneta Liechty, Margret Allspaw, Jeanette Sprunger, Maxine Beavers, Elizabeth Hirschy, Virginia Heller, Helen Wittwer, LaVerda Sprunger, Lucille Sprunger, Carmen Lehman, Betty Mae Habegger, Ardythe Luginbill Second Row—Vivian Gottschalk, Vera Lehman, Vernelle Habegger. Sports encourage clean play and cooperation. Can we not say that athletics are indeed worth while? 23 Our Cheer Leaders Marie Schwartz Merlin Stucky Isabel Schug Thomas Sprungf.r Here Comes The Team The Bears started the season this year with a new coach, “Lakie” Glendening, who came to Berne from Albion. He was not employed until a short time before the opening of school. Because of this he had no time to work with the basketball team in advance of the season. As a result of this the Bears opened up the season lacking a knowledge of his type of playing. After a rather dismal start the Bears started to come along rapidly, and by the end of the season were winning their share of games. In the sectional tournament it was again the Bears’ luck to draw their rivals, Decatur, in the first game. Berne was defeated by three points. The Bears finished the season with a record of 8 games won and 13 lost. This record was made against schools of much larger enrollment then Borne. The starting five usually consisted of E. Habegger, McKean, G. Habegger, Baumgartner, and Lieehty, with Schwartz, and C. Habegger contributing much to help the Bears along. L. L. GLENDENING, Coach—'‘‘Lakie” to us, deserves much credit, for it was no easy task to come into a new school and coach a new team. He worked as one of us, not as one above. His swell personality combined with his good sense has won our admiration and respect. We are proud to have him as our coach. ROY SCHWARTZ, Captain-elect, a good team player and hard worker. Although sacrificed in many games for height, he made no complaints. A good sport, never shot when a teammate had a better chance. We’ll miss him.—L. L. G. LYNN LIECHTY—In the “thick” of everything, a good offensive man and a “pillar of strength” on defense. He developed into one of the best of pivot men. Handled the ball cleverly and could hit the “bucket.” Third high scorer of the season. Just developing—too bad he is graduating.—L. L. G. GLENN HABEGGER—Glenn’s first try at varsity ball, developed rapidly. His height was a decided asset to the team. He was “regular” in every way. We could use him next year.—L. L. G. 24 Go Get 'em, Berne Bears ROBERT McKEAN—A fast, clever ball handler, plenty of ability and an eye for the basket. Lack of experience his greatest liability, speed his greatest asset. A good man.—L. L. G. HOWARD BAUMGARTNER—One of DICK LEHMAN—A freshman who came along rapidly toward the close of the season, joining the Bears for the last few games. A great underbasket man who will score many points next year. You will be hearing much of this boy the next three years. Berne’s leading scorers this year, should do still better next year. The best defensive man the team had, he saciificed many points by playing backguard this year. A junior this year, he and Habegger should form the nucleus for next year’s team. EARL HABEGGER—The other leading scorer of the tarn this year was this speed boy. The fastest man on the team with a never-give-up spirit. Always in the game for all he had, his favorite trick was to steal the ball and dribble the length of the floor to score. You'll see a lot of him next year. JOHN SPRUNGER—Only a sophomore who was of much value to the team late in the season. Teaming up with Dick Lehman next year, he should be of great value to the Bears. Very tricky under the basket, what he lacks in size he makes up cleverness. CLIFF HABEGGER—A sophomore who came to Berne from Monroe and proved invaluable to the Bears. A great scrapper with grand team spirit, will probably team in with Lehman, Sprunger, E. Habegger, and Baumgartner, to complete next year’s team. RAYMOND MAZELIN—Although not much of a scorer, he is a great help on defense and rebounding. His experience with the Cubs this year should help him next year. One of the biggest men on the squad. As he is a junior this year, next year will be his last year. JIM BIXLER—Last, but not least, our manager. ‘‘Bix” proved to be a faithful manager always unruffled and pulling for the Bears. Only a sophomore, he will be around yet for two more years. 25 Season's Record 1940-'41 We . .47 They 17 We 31 They ...27 Berne 34 Monroe 29 Berne 27 New Haven 30 Berne 26 Geneva 32 Berne 37 Columbia City 45 Berne 31 New Haven 33 .28 21 Berne 32 Redkev . 25 26 Bluffton . 29 Berne 24 Union City .. 30 Berne 30 Hartford City 28 22 Portland 34 34 35 15 .31 33 Winchester 39 26 Dunkirk 18 36 Decatur 28 Berne 10 Garrett 27 SECTIONAL TOURNEY Berne 31 Huntington 50 Berne 23 Decatur 26 Front Row—Robert Liechtv, Lester Habegger, Wayne Stuckey. In the final game the Seniors defeated the Juniors by a score of 27 to 21. As the prize the school made a beautiful plaque on which the winner’s class numbers were painted. 26 Berne Baseball Team The baseball team faced the problem of producing a capable pitcher, as the team lost three pitchers by graduation. This problem was solved bv Howard Baumgartner, Dick Lehman, Roger Flueckiger, and Gaylord Stuckey. Backing these boys up were Lynn Liechty, catcher, Billy Emick, first base, Roy Schwartz, second base. Cliff Habegger, third base, Earl Habegger, short stop. Raymond Mazelin. left field. Glenn Habegger, right field, and Les Habegger, center field. The team made a good record, playing games with Wren, O., Winchester, Hartford City, Decatur, Bluffton, Portland. Gray, and Bryant. From the time we are freshmen up to the time we are seniors classes play a most important part. It is our application here that determines and molds our future. They thought it was a Freshman class; But, when they nearer to it drew, They saw it was a looking glass.” This was quite the case in the fall of 1937 when thirty-five innocents entered high school; for, you see, we were not the typical gieen group of Freshmen. We chose Roger Luginbill as our president; Deryll Sprunger, our vice president; Donald Lehman, our secretary; and Lynn Liechty, our treasurer. They led us through the nine months with a strong determination to achieve gieat things. The biggest event during this year was our Christmas party. We came back the next fall, and entered the Assembly as Sophmores. We snatched at the opportunity of being called upper classmen and—those poor Freshmen! Palmer Liechty led us through this successful year assisted by Roger Luginbill, Lynn Liechty, and Deryll Sprunger. We had two class parties. The first was in celebration of St. Valentine’s Day; the last, a farewell party for our classmate, Gerhart Muselman. By the third year, we changed our name to Juniors. Our number was decreased. This year, after careful planning (ask Howard Neuenschwander about this) we chose as our president, Edward Eichenberger; vice president, Marjorie Habegger; secretary, Roy Schwartz; and treasurer, Gyneth Schindler. Several members of our class presented our class play, “Laughing Irish Eyes,” on October 20, 1939. Everyone enjoyed it immensely. Even more exciting was the night when we entertained the Seniors with a reception. We are now on the last lap of our High School days as Seniors. Our class officers for this year have been Gyneth Schindler, president; Marie Schwartz, vice president; Deryll Sprunger, secretary, and Roger Luginbill. treasurer. For our class motto, we chose “Life is what you make it.” We picked the Talisman rose for our class flower, and tearose and silver for our class colors. We presented our class play, “Freckles.” based on Gene Stratton Porter’s book, on April 18. As we leave Berne High School, we take with us fond memories and experiences that will go with us the rest of our lives and help us to overcome the difficulties that we will meet in the future. 33 Class Will We, the Senior Class of Berne High School of the year One Thousand, Nine Hundred and Forty-one, being of sound minds, broadened by four years of education in the afore said high school, and realizing that the day of our'departure is near at hand do hereby declare and publish our last will and testament. The foregoing instrument was signed by the said Senior Class as their last will and testament, and at their request and in the presence of each other we now subscribe our names as witnesses. Ardus Gene Sprunger ’42 Howard Baumgartner ’42 34 In Memoriam As classmates of Robert Stengel we feel the need of expressing some tribute to the memory of such a splendid friend and student. To know what to say is a great problem, for finding words to express our sentiments on paper is indeed hard. Bob, as he was known to us, is missed by the students as well as the faculty, but he has left behind many pleasant memories. His kind personality and his studious nature are not soon to be forgotten. Bob was very active in Boy Scout work, and truly no finer scout can be found. How happy we are to say that Bob left us. living up to his Boy Scout motto, “Be Prepared.” To those who knew him. he leaves no regrets, but only pleasant memories. 35 Class Of 1942 First Rote—Helen Wittwer.
