He has gained the respect and affection of the faculty and the stu- dents for his unselfish participation in school activities over the years. He has always been ready to help at football games, dances, and numerous other events. Because of his many contributions, he will always be held in high esteem and fond memory by the students of Bernards High. Future Is Main Concern in Guidance The past success experience in scheduling was once again repeated in late spring. Follow- ing the pattern of the past few years, students were allowed to choose their own courses and plan their schedules accordingly. Students were aided in their future plans by the many services offered by the guidance department. With the aid of college catalogues, vocational handbooks, and college conferences, students were able to investigate the many opportunities available to them in today's world. ' YV esponsibilit Stressed in Languages This year, the Foreign Language Depart- ment stressed individual responsibility on the part of each student as a means of learn- ing to fully understand all aspects of a lan- guage as well as discipline helped students to attain this responsibility. Individuality was expressed in the IV, V, and VI levels of lan- guages through projects, original poetry, and other literature developed bythe students. A new machine, the Language Master, located in the frequently used Resource Cen- ter, helps students to study grammar and other aspects of a language, or may be used for pure enjoyment. Carol DeVido, a senior, deserves a great deal of credit for her true dedication to the New Iersey Classical League at which she was elected Consul CPresidentJ in May, 1974. Individual Help Aided Students in Mathematics The math department this year worked together to give each student a complete and thorough understanding of all aspects of math by administering individual help. In addition to making help available after school, the depart- ment also developed a geometry class that moved at a slower pace. The availability of pocket calculators aided many trigonometry and calculus students. Student enrollment in Mr. Roeder's computer orientation was again high. Consequently, the department tried to combine more actual math in this course to make this course more benefi- cial to math students at B.H.S. The music department is one of the few in the school where everyone has a chance to join and develop his individual talents. Some type of activity is offered to all - women's or men's choir, concert choir, marching band, or concert band to name just a few of the diverse areas explored in this department. In band this year, several interesting events took place. Pit orchestra became a class, thus providing the spring musical with a strong instrumental section. The band was also involved in a Christmas event. Meeting Santa Claus on Olcott Field, they escorted him down- town playing Christmas carols. Later that week, the band went caroling in a bus to various homes in the area. In the choral department, the annual Christ- mas concert was truly given a festive holiday spirit. Following the concert in the auditorium, alumni and friends gathered on stage to sing the traditional Hallelujah Chorus from Beetho- ven's Mount of Olives. After this, members of the choir and the audience re-grouped in the cafeteria for refreshments and a candle-lit carol sing-along. It provided great enjoyment for all and will hopefully become a BHS tradition. KEVIN BELLOSA, B.M.E.. Murray State U., orchestra director M. Courses in industrial arts were slightly revised this year. Relating the classroom knowl- edge to practical experiences became the emphasis in these classes. With the aid of movies, books, slides, and brochures, students were able to create projects which won them recognition. Paul I-Ieimlicher and Carl Roth built grandmother clocks, in hopes of selling them. Steve Dunne built a grandfather clock. Mark Williams did excep- tional work and built a hydro-plane boat. Snacks, donuts, and hot chocolate as well as cold breakfast cereals were made available for purchase during all the morning study halls, and of course the students had access to the vending and milkshake machines throughout the day. Tatergems, little french-fried potatoes, were among BHS appe- tites. Another area at the school that again lived up to its reputation was the library. In addition to maintaining a wide variety of contemporary and well-known books, Miss Young made the newly purchased microfilm machine available to the students to aid them with research pro- jects. 36 Cashiers, L to R: Karee Hassold, Nancy Dodge. To decide the victor of the meet, the highest scores of the first and second year team are compared to those of other schools. Besides participating in competitions organ- ized by the New Iersey Chemistry League, four of the best representatives of the team went to May's State Science Day at Farleigh Dickinson. Being a member of the team means hard work, but Mr. Hague, the advisor, feels that it also provides an excellent and unique opportu- nity for those who plan to continue in science. '51, Equestrians Horse fans were at last given a chance to form their own club at BHS, this year. The 32 members are divided into three groups - beginner, intermediate, and advancedg the first two groups participate in lessons at Coppergate Riding Stable. These two groups are divided in half so that on alternating weeks, half of the members goto a mounted lesson while the other half receives theoretical instruction con- cerned with topics such as stable management, grooming, and tack. Six people of the more advanced group performed a drill team exhib- ition for the entertainment of the crowd at the Thanksgiving Day game. Other activities that the group organized included a guest speaker, Major Von Vichy, who gave a lunging demon- stration, and the group also made tentative plans to ride in the New York St. Patrick's Day Parade. 1: Pam Lazor. With only a small group to work with, the music is more dif- ficult than is ordinarily found in a high school choral group. Men's Glee serves as a foundation group and gives young voices a chance to rehearse in preparation for future musical experiences. This year, mostly secular music and a few spiritual pieces were performed. This group is another fine example of the excellent choral program at Bernards High. Mila, fl? 1 zzz Q, s Glu., L to R. S. Versatilit Brings Recognition to Elite Group A select and unusual group, the Madrigals provide diversity in their musical program. A group of thirteen singers is chosen from the Concert Choir to compose this elite singing ensemble. In addition to a wide range of music from negro spirituals to renaissance pieces, Madrigals perform to a number of different audiences. Besides the regular concerts at the school, they have appeared at the Governor Morris Inn, various churches, and at a program for the AAUW. In the major concert of the year at Delbarton, Madrigals performed several selections including a few by Debussy, once again showing their versatility and quality as an outstanding part of our music program. 1 .... 2 Combine inspiration and concentration to produce great music. an 3 . eBand L toR Rowl B Troy K Randolph L Matera Mr Cowan I Bradshaw D Templin, P. M Dance Band Performs j M Contemporar Selections Another integral part of the music depart- ment, the Dance Band, focused on yet another aspect of music. Contemporary music was the foundation of this group, and a wide range of selections were chosen for each performance. This group consisted of select concert band members, and because of its superiority, the music was more difficult and intricate. The Dance Band often performed at assemblies, and also entertained and enthused audiences at both their Mid-winter and Pop's Concerts. Small Group Makes Crowd Smile The twirling squad was limited to four select girls this year, and the end result was excellent. Because the group was so small, the girls per- formed more complex and daring routines with no fear of honking a neighboring twirler. One of the highlights of the band's half-time per- formances was You Make Me Smile, which featured the four twirlers who entertained the crowds in their new uniforms with their dance routines and flashy twirling techniques. nuncil L to R: E. Male Club Encourages Girls to Ioin Although the name might imply competition, the weight-lifting club is part of the Bernards High intra-mural program. Actually, the club is geared towards weight training rather than lift- ing. lts goal is basically to promote general physical fitness and also help rehabilitate those students who may have been injured. The new universal gym provides a wide variety of equip- ment for use by the club. Mr. Hinderer runs the program in the fall, Mr. Picker and Mr. Mount in the winter and Mr. Ellard in the spring. This organization is open to all students in grades 7- 12. Even though this club is predominantly male, Mr. Picker hopes that more girls will join in the future to brighten up the place. Ladies Auxiliar Aids Wrestlers This group of dedicated girls is the support- ing force behind the wrestling team. Along with the cheerleaders, they help to build the team's confidence and raise the school spirit by filling the halls with posters and attending every match.
