This year's Student Council has tried to teak down this barrier, not only between the students and the administrators, but among the students themselves. Finishing with a fine 9-4 record , the team easily handled Hackettstown, Belvi- dere , Kenilworth , Dunellen, Bound Brook, Netcong, Ridge, Roselle Park, and Morris Catholic and lost some close ones to Manville, Dover, Middlesex, and Randolph due to injuries, Individual records also were excellent with Stu Rowley and Lou Abbondanzo both inishing undefeated, untied, and unmatched - 13-0, Single loss records were compiled by Dave Frank- linf12-13, Jin'1'MunroqO-13, and Joe Mini-Brute LaSpada Q7-1-15, The junior varsity also finished an excellent season with a 10-3 record - the best yet by a junior varsity squad - and will most probably supply next year's starting line-up, Highlights of the '69-'70 season were the capturing of four individual crowns at the Bridgewater-Raritan Christmas Tournament, a pin scored by Rosie Craig in 14 seconds at Belvidere, Stu Rowley's first pin at the Dunellen match, the capturing of three district crowns, and finally, above the rest, Stu Rowley's winning of the re ional crown and tak- ing fourtg place honors for the state of New Jersey in his weight class, Stu was a Christmas champ along with Joe LaSpada, Lou Abbondanzo, and Rosie Craig, and went on to win a district crown with Joe and Lou, Joe lost in the semi-finals of the regionals to this year's state runner-up and took a fourth, Lou lost a tough one in the semi's on a split referee's decision and took a third, but Stu went on to win regionals and place fourth in the state. Being only the sec- ond boy in the school's history to enter the state wrestling finals, this was indeed an honor for both Stu and Ber- nards High. The coaches are sorry to lose their boys, but know that next year they will have another twelve working out there on the mats to ring home the rewards they we 1 deserve, IIS delamination 2- :ia ii' aff -2 nw? -, 2 w we M if I-Wifi? if - fr.r:kQ'5fi 5' V . ,vgizlgaz-' ip. . gif fre fweife-wr riff L lu?- '91.i'P S1'af1 ' ' ' 1 r r rm-if r ,lf ,Z g sf-1 15' 'f -' r . - I Q P' .am ,sf 11. - 2, 'i11g1w' , . Not because this year's basketball team lacked for talented players: but because this squad, as well as its predecessors, was never quite able to combine the appropriate ingredients of the competitive recipe to yield the cake of victory rather than the crumbs of defeat. The 4 team finished with a disheart- ening 8 and 15 record, as it perpetuated , through novdeci- sion of its own, the heritage of disappointment which has come to characterize Bernards High basketball. Upon examination of this season's team roster, it would appear that the aforementioned record is a misprint rather than a measure of achievement. No team, one supposes, with this amount of individual ability could produce such a dismal account of itself, There was Matt Broderick, the captain, whose outstand- ing rebounding was invariably overshadowed by his prolific scoring. Ed Johnson, probably the most improved player on the team, proved himself a potent offensive threat, as well as being the most capable defensive player on the team. And there was John Maddaluna, the Mighty Joe Young of Bernards High basketball, who frequently brought ever thing down but the backboarc? when he rebounded. Supplementlng the efforts of the permanent starting three were a number of talented jun- iors who contributed amply to the team 's fortunes, including Bob Potts, Bruce Shaw, Jeff Rush, Kevin 'I'homas, Brian Bombergjer, John Hughes and John Au recht. All of these players, with the exception of Broderick and Don Bierbower, the only other senior, will re- turn next season, hopefully to produce different results. This team, to phrase it colloquiall , was better than their record, would indicate. The talent is present, indeed, it has always been there. The task before Coach Preston is to mold the diverse fragments into a structured, hannonious unit. Only then will the hol- lowness o empty platitudes be forsaken for the satisfaction of accomplished performance. Only then will the skeleton be removed from its musty closet, and buried with unadulterated pleasure. II9 Tmcla Om' to chalk up another Mate title .
