Up a narrow flight of stairs in a narrow little room, As I lie upon my bed in the early evening gloom, lmpaled on my wall, my eyes can dimly see The pattern of my life and the puzzle that is me. From the moment of my birth to the instant of my death, There are patterns I must follow, just as I must breathe each breath. Like a rat in a maze, a path before me lies, And the pattern never alters until the rat dies. The pattern still remains on the wall where darkness fell, And it 's fitting that it should, for in darkness I must dwell. Like the color of my skin or the day that I grow old, My life is made of patterns that can scarcely be controlled. by Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel Printed by permission of CHARING CROSS MUSIC COMPANY Copyright 1955 6 5211azzs: 2fHf2EzQfafz eewsnfiiisssfez-z1.if-w.1: 1: 1 Dedication Mr. George Smith is a teacher with a unique way of imparting his own vast knowledge of the English language, literature, and contemporary drama to his students. Head Advisor: MRS. DOROTHY H. ROCKEFELLER Bernards welcomed us as freshmen in the fall of '64, We soon became accustomed to our new en- vironment, and capably led by President Debbie Talbot, Vice President Bruce Appeldoorn, Secretary Mary Castrilli, and Treasurer Jim D'Agostino, we began to function as a class. Our first significant en- deavor was sponsoring our own Freshman Clash Dance. ' As sophomores, we returned to Bernards anxious to tackle our new responsibilities. Under the spirited leadership of President Sean Kelly, Vice President Chris Hopper, Secretary Mary Castrilli, and Treasurer Lynda Young, we gave the traditional Baby Party for the incoming freshmen. Keeping the sophomore tradition, we transformed the December bulletin boards into The Night Before Christmas. Our greatest Sophie accomplishment proved to be the January Sophomore Dance. Q ln our Junior year, our officers were Kip Reilly, Presidentg Steve Munro, Vice Presidentg Mary Cas- trilli, Secretary: and Cyndi Werring, Treasurer. Nearly one hundred couples were transported to An Evening in Paris as we proudly presented our memorable Junior Prom in December, No doubt '67-'68 will be our most memorable year at B, H. S. Class officers John Zimmerman, Presidentg Christy Knauff, Vice Presidentg Mary Castrilli, Secretaryg and Mark Wuerfel, Treasurer, carried out class activities despite the hindrance of an incomplete school building, We held the Senior Dance in October, organized one of the largest pre-Ridge bonfires B.H. S. has ever seen, and appropri- ately ended the year with the unforgettable Senior Prom. We have seen ourselves improve both scholastically and individually during our four-year stay at Bernards. We are appreciative of the efforts of the faculty and administration who have made these unique experiences possible. Look out, world! B.H. This can be seen in the theme, taken from a contemporary song, and also in the attempt to modernize the layout and the artwork. The task of assembling a yearbook was not an easy one and the editors and the staff of the Bernardian have labored diligently to make this book a successful one. Ellen Ward, book sales managerg Janet Selover, activitiesg Lynda Young, special featuresg Sandi Runyon, editor-in chiefg Sue Willis, senior editorg Shirley Wortrnan, adsg Sue Hopkins, photographyg Barbara Janchus, secretaryg Liz Spofford, treasurerg Sandy Chambers, store managerg Mary Castrilli, sportsg Gene Haulenbeek, art, Faculty Ad- visors: Mrs. Jones, Miss I-Iosmer. Council Voices Opinions ond Desires of Student' At any time during any day this year our dynamic Student Council president, Debbie Talbot, could be seen in the library conferring with Miss Young about her newest idea. Under Debbie 's direction, the Student Council presented its annual freshman orien- tation, the Student Council tea, and a dance in September. The Council, which was named an honor council by the Annual Student Council Con- ference in January, also presented the Alumni tea for graduates of Bernards High and hopeful seniors, and the traditional Leadership Seminar to inspire the school 's leaders to bigger and better things. A new style of Homecoming was seen this year high- lighted by the return of the 1917 football team. The Council 's newest project was the institution of a scholarship fund for a deserving senior. The Keynote Is Harmony Under the direction of Mr. Lon Cass, the Bernards High Band continued to improve its marching and playing ability. After a successful week at band camp where the freshmen were initiated into the hardships of marching band life, the band proved to be one of the best participating in the New Brunswick Band Festival. Attending all football games, the band performed intricate precision drills to music such as Jazz on Parade and a dance step to Music to Watch Girls By. During the winter months the band presented concerts and participated in an exchange concert. 94 95 Directed by Mr. Cass, the Dance Band played many of the standard hits of the past and also worked on several popular songs including Lara 's Theme from the movie Doctor Zhivago and Winchester Cathedral. They were also exposed to some music theory of the style and structure of popular music, which Mr. Cass considers an important part of any music course. Jozz Flows Through Our Hcalls Assembly Bond Explores Ensemble Music 1 1- :1 , By playing for the pep rallies and assemblies, the Assembly Band helped boost school spirit. This activity gave reg- ular band members the chance for additional prac- tice in ensemble playing, and the opportunity to perform a valuable service. Exclusive Male Organization Proves Popular Boys' Glee, as a new vocal group, began its first year by presenting selections at assemblies and concerts. The boys represented all classes, yet all did not belong to the Concert Choir. In the future, this group hopes to enlarge as interest grows among the talented males at BHS. John G. Under the spirited leadership of co-captains Ted Palmer and Steve Scott, the Mounties fittingly ended the season by scoring a tremendous upset over their arch rivals, Ridge High, thereby crushing all hopes of the Red Devils for an undefeated season. Coach Ferry, aided by assistant coaches Buckley and Mangiafico, administered the valuable direction which was used by the squad to give every opposing team a rough going over. Throughout different times in the games, the team showed a threatening offensive attack and a powerful defense but failed to combine the two forces well enough until the final game. Bernards usually manifested a powerful first attack, but was finally defeated because of unlucky breaks and un- expected errors. Bernards put everything worthwhile together and threw away all errors in the Ridge contest. Con- sequently, they dominated the game in a brilliant victory, 13-6. Spirit, aggressiveness, some un- veiled talent, and a new offense, devised by Coach Ferry, were all contributing factors in overwhelming the Ridgers. Top individual honors were taken by Kip Reilly who was picked for the first team All-Mountain Val ley Conference. Rob Ward made the second team, and Ted Palmer and Bill Richardson were given hon- orable mention. Next year the team will have several returning lettermen and underclassmen composing the strong and S1lCCCSSfHl J. V. and Freshman teams. Horriers Sweep Own Invitotionol Undoubtedly one of the highlights of the sports year was the achievement of the Cross Country team. Under Coach Mather the team was involved in re- building its members, since graduation had taken six of our top seven men. With the help of some excellent talent from the underclassmen, the team compiled a most impressive 10-O mark. Competing in the Seton Hall I invitation, the team placed in a tie for third place among a field of some 25 teams. At our own Bernardslnvitational Meet, the BHS boys completely eliminated the ac- tion in both Group I and II by scoring an easy victory in the varsity race. At the Somerset County Meet the team placed second to strong Group IV powered Somerville and lost its two year hold on the county title. After placing first in the Central Jersey Qual- ifying Meet, the team went to Pennsauken to com- pete in the State Championships. Bernards found the competition much tougher than usual and could manage only a third in defense of its title. The BHS harriers were led by senior captain Paul Vornhagen, who completed his fourth year of varsity competition. Other seniors who helped to strengthen the squad were Gary Aheam and Gene Haulenbeek. Most of this year's starters were under- classmeng from the junior class came Steve and Don Arntz, John Rush, and Rick Leonard. They opened the season at home with a fine show- ing against a tough Middlesex team, losing by five points. They then evened the record to 1-1 by defeating Chatham Twp. and entered the Delaware Valley Invitational Christmas Tournament. The team played very impressive basketball by beating Phillipsburg Catholic and North Hunterdon to win the consolation bracket of the tourney. After this early sea- son success the team failed to continue a consistent style of play and did not get its fourth win until they beat Roxbury at home the next to the last game of the season. Outstanding individual effort was shown this year by senior Ted Palmer who was one of the team 's leading and its best defensive player. Another standout and team 's best hope for the future is junior John Rush. Under the direction of Coaches Keller, Melitski, and Stevens, the team compiled a record of 8 wins, 2 losses and 1 tie, placing second in the Mountain Valley Con- ference. The grapplers were fourth in the annual Bridgewater-Raritan Christmas Tournament and third in the district 18 Championships. ln the first match against Madison, Bernards fought hard, but lost in the last match. Undaunted by this, our wrestlers retaliated with victories over Manville, Belvidere, Dunellen, Middlesex, Net- Cong, Delaware Valley, Roselle Park, and of course, Ridge. Against Randolph Twp. the team tied in a last minute thriller. Its second loss of the season came at the hands of an extremely strong Bound Brook team. In the contest against our Ridge rivals, there was no question from the start of the match which was the superior team. Individually, there were several high honors attained by our grapplers. In the Bridgewater-Rav itan Tourney, Lou Abbondanzo and Roy Van Ars- dale placed first. Along with Van Arsdale, Jeff Bolash took first place championships in the Districts. Second places were won by Abbondanzo and Stuart Rowley, while John Zimmerman, Rickie Leonard, and Lee Bullman took thirds. Van Arsdale placed second in the Regionals after winning two straight matches, and Bolash claimed fourth place after losing in the second round.
