Although I rest in fragrant powers, To highest heaven their gladsome flight; Though moons are full and stars are bright; And winds and waves are softly sighing, While leafy trees make low replying; Though voices dear in joyous strain Repeat a jubilant refrain; Though rising suns their radiance throw On summer’s green and winter's snow, In such rare splendor that my heart Would ache from scenes like these to part; Though beauties heighten, And life-lights brighten, And joys proceed from every pain — I shall not pass this way again. I love the beauty of the scene, Would roam again o’er fields so green; But since I may not, let me spend My strength for others to the end — For those who tread on rock and stone, And bear their burdens all alone, Who loiter not in leafy bowers, Nor hear the birds nor pluck the flowers, A larger kindness give to me, A deeper love and sympathy; Then, 0, one day May someone say — Remembering a lessened pain — “Would he pass this way again. .......£va Rost York Bffi.'fc' ;l L Ah ■ ■' WmmJn Mm M rm, W w w JAMW 'iM M $: 0 3 ;-j- «.a? Tharlngcr The Bernalillo Spartans varsity football team suffered another one of their heartbreaking losses last Satur- day against West Las Vegas, 29-8. The first quarter was, for the most part, competitive. But in the second quarter. West Las Vegas decided they had had enough of competition and ran away with the ballgamc. With an incredible series of scoring drives, Vegas accumulated 20 points in five minutes late in the second quar- ter. Vegas scored on runs from five, seven and four yards out. In the second half, they would score again on a 49-yard touchdown pass and a field goal. In the meantime, the Spartans pro- duced nothing but penalties. They were cl urged with 265 yards worth of penalties in the first half alone. When they weren’t being penalized, the Spartans were afflicted by turnovers. “We moved the ball real well between the 30-yard lines, said Spar- tan coach Chris Jaramillo. But when we got near the goal line, we just couldn't punch it in. The Spartans did eventually punch it in late in the fourth quarter, saving the shutout. A 65-yard passing play from Berna- lillo quarterback Bill Baker to Cary Fierro almost went for six points, but Fierro was stopped three yards short of paydirt. Shortly after, senior Brian Perez ran in from a few yards out finally putting the Spartans on the board. Perez would run in again, giving the Spartans a 2-point conversion. Perez rushed for 85 yards on 12 car- ries on the day and Fierro caught three passes for 135 yards. Despite only one win on the season, the Spartans remain optimistic. “We’re still keeping after it.” said Jramillo, who is already preparing for next week's game against frontrunner Espanola. '•They're a good team, it'll be a challenge, said Jaramillo. “But we’re not giving in. The game will be Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Espanola. Spartans end By Jay P. Tharlngcr Under dark clouds and threats of run, the Bernalillo Spartans ended a gloomy season Saturday by losing to the Albuquerque Academy Chargers, 21-0. The Spartans finish 1-9 on the season. Although outsized, the Spartans played perhaps their best defensive game of the season by hilling hard and hitting quick off the line. The Chargers stuck primarily to a running game, rarely picking up more than four or fise yards at time. But as the day wore on, those runs would get longer and longer. With 42 seconds left in live first half, live Chargers pul their first points on the board on a run from three yards out. Thirty seconds remained in the half as the Spartans took over possession and took to the air, only to have their passing game backfire. On 2nd-and 10, Spartan quarter- back Bill Baker threw an interception on a missed pattern pass down field. The Chargers returned the ball far enough down field to add a field goal with 11 seconds remaining. The half ended 9-0. The Chargers penetrated the end zone once again early in the third quar- ter from 3 yards out. The extra point was good for the 160 lead. Confident with the lead, the Char- gers took to the air in the fourth quar- ter. somewhat successfully. Bernalillo sophomore Pat Lovato dark season took advantage of the air bom ball by nabbing two interceptions on two con- secutive Charger possessions. But however strong the defense, the Spar- tan offense couldn't produce the points. Working deep in their own end, and from the shotgun, a high snap sailed over Baker's head and out the back of the end zone for a Charger safety. Midway through the fourth quarter the Chargers added three more points on a field goal from 14 yards out to win the game 21-0. The !9$7 Spartan football team did hive a rough reason Everyone who participated deserved more credit than they've received. Our Team had to put up with tremendous amounts of ridicule and criticism throughout the season. Remarks and comments were made about our previous game, and a majority of them weren't exactly supportive. So. how bad did you lose this week t We've heard it aff. and yes. it does get frustrating after a while. Sure, we could have given up. but we're not quitters, ft would have been very easy for anyone of us to turn in our equipment and join the critics. We would have enjoyed just going home after school to relax, but instead we showed up at practice. Repetition and execution of plays is boring and is even more difficult when the team Isn't winning. Sometimes the desire and dedication wasn’t at the level in which it should have been. Those who did believe in us. such as the coaching staff and a few loyal fans, knew what we went through. In my opinion. Chris JaranuOo did an outstanding job coaching and helping the team maintain a positive attitude. With aB the work he has done for us. most of which has gone unappreciated. I know he wrB be rewarded by his efforts sometime in the future. Considering the unexperienced group he had to work with, he showed the same enthusiasm that another coach might with a championship team. Thai's probably the main source of motivation that kept us all from losing hope. The whole football team were winners themselves, because they never ga vr up and they supported each other when no one else would. B Baker ,1 114 BHS Spartans win first, 14-12 By Jay P. Tharlnger The Bernalillo Spartans have won their first varsity football game of the season. And it took a gutsy fourth down play to do so. The Spartans defeated Zuni High School Saturday, 14-1}. “Zuni has a good, physical ball club, said Spartan head coach Chris Jaramillo. “It was an incredible vic- tory for us. Zuni had the lead going into the fourth quarter, 8-6, as they picked up a Spartan fumble on the Bernalillo 12-yard line. The Spartan defensive lino knew how important it was to keep Zuni out of the end rone during these final criti- cal minutes. But they couldn't. For the first three downs, the Spartan line kept Zuni from reaching paydirt stopping the outside run. On a 4th-and-one quarterback sneak, Zuni was seemingly stacked up at the goal line and the Bernalillo bench was certain they had held. But the referee felt otherwise, signaling a touchdown. Zuni's extra point was blocked but they had increased their lead to 12-8. Late in the fourth quarter, it looked as though the Spartans would be hand- ed tbeir fifth straight defeat. Senior fullback Brian Perez received the Zuni kick off anl returned the ball to their own 36-yard line. Then their series began. On first down, quarterback Bill Baker threw an out pattern to Bernalil- lo sophomore Shane Mortensen who dropped the ball. “He was thinking touchdown, even before he caught the ball, explained coach Jaramillo. Second down was just as effective, going for another incompleti on. . Third down was even worse u the Spartans were caught holding and pen- alized 15 yards. Their next play, a 3rd- down and 25 pass attempt to junior Jerry Gurule was caught, but out of bounds. Two minutes remained and Berna- lillo was 70 yards from the end zone. So, with 4th-down and 25, the Spartan offense pulled out all the stops. The play was sent in, a Pump Five; a fake pass to the outside, then long. Baker drew the defense away from corner stage with a pump to the right then connected with junior wide receiver Andy Chavez who covered 70 yards and went in for the touchdown. Their extra point was blocked, but that really didn't seem to matter at that point. Zuni still had 1:50 left cn the clock to strike back. But tbeir balloon had been deflated and they couldn't pro- duce a first down. From that point, all Bernalillo had to do was run out the clock. “We were optimistic going into this game,” said Jaramillo. The team's attitude all week was tremendous. The Spartans play on the road again Saturday against West Las Vegas. Kickoff is at 1:30 p.m. 115 The varsity volleyball team worked very hard and accom- plished a lot. They grew close and fond of each other. That's part of being a team. This was Vicky Garcia's first year as J.V. volleyball coach. She's very tough and believes in self discipline. Her team had a great season. Hopefully she'll be back to coach the varsity next year. The J.V. football team was tough and rough. Their offense was the best and their defense dominated. Most of these young men will make up the varsity next season and the football team will be 1. Goodbye to the senior football players. They made the year great. They showed leadership to the underclassmen. Maybe someday they'll make the pro's. These tough girl's will be back to make up the varsity next season. They did a great job this year considering they were all 1st time players. Lot's of ACTION, lots of SPIKING! 116 Fall Sports Banquet 1987 It was a year to re-build the team. Because the team gradu- ated last year, we started over aaain with new players and coaches. The skills and teamwork improved greatly during the season, next year promises to be a good season and time to go farther with our skills. - Soccer Coach Ron Olson B.H.S. The girl's cross coun- try team had a very suc- cessful season. The girl's improved week by week, and injuries did not slow them down. We did not have any depth, so a seri- ous injury to any of the girl's would have hurt us tremendously. We won the first place trophy at our invitational the second place tro- phy at the Santa Fe Indi- an School Invitational. These meets were a good preparation for the district meet to take the district championship. Our fantastic freshman, Pheadra Valesquez took first place, Rita Tenorio second, Cynthia Sando- val fourth, Donna Ten- orio fifth, Michelle Can- delaria eighth, and Dawn Blue Sky was tenth. The most valuable runner for the season was Pheadra Valesquez. She also placed seventh individ- ually in the State Meet. The two graduating sen- iors are Donna Tenorio and Dawn Blue Sky. We are looking forward to continuing our fine tradi- tion of winning next year. - Coach Roger Hamel I would like to com- mend the senior volley- ball players for their out- standing sportsmanship leadership, and positive attitude. Tomacita Pena is commended for the most valuable player. Rochelle Garcia and Ju- lie Amette for most im- proved players. I enjoyed coaching these girl's and wish them the best in their fu- ture plans. - With Love, Rita L. Madrid, Head vol- leyball coach Thanks for the 5 years in cross country. It was fun taking on all the challenges, we hope that in the years to come the Spartans will always be a challenge to run against. Thanks to coach fiowden and coach Hamel for the encouragement and support Good Luck to the future Spartan runners. Gotta Run! - Donna Sr Dawn 117 A Time To Remember Senior fullback Brian Perez played a crucial part in the Bernalillo - Santa Rosa game, but then, he always played crucial parts, he scored from 25 yards out and lead the spartans in yards. Thanks for a great season Brian, Goodbye Goodluck. The football team presented their manager, Henrietta Willie, with a red white pullover, embroidered with her nickname. Hanks worked hard to keep up her team and manage it. Chris Jaramillo coached his team to a great season. Even though many games weren't won, the coach kept his cool and was enthusi- astic. Job Well done! Donna Tenorio was part of the heart-n-soul of the girl's cross country team. Being a senior runner she showed outstanding leadership and pride. She's an awesome runner. 118 Gary Ficro was a leader this year and next year he'll be back to help spark the team on the field and for sure they'll have a great season. Roger Hamel had a fantastic first year as head coach for the girl's cross country team. His girl s were dlstnct champions and took 5th at State! GOOD JOB COACH! 119 LEFT-RIGHT COACH, CLARENCE GRIEGO. The Social Studies department at BUS must play a vital role in the eudeation of our students. We live in such a history laiden area of the world dating back before the time of recorded history and yet we are very much a part of the modern world today. Our department strives to relate the past to the present. We attempt to answer the questions: ‘Who are you? Where did you come from? how did we develop the world we live in today? Where are we headed? How can we avoid the mistakes of the past?'' We want our students to understand that the world is made up of more than just the three cultures of the Rio Grande River Valley. We must learn to respect, understand, and live in peace with all the people of the shrinking world. -Jim howden 15.1 Your Teachers Will Aways Be There, When You Need Them Pat Aguilar, Special Ed.
