The qualities of the year are captured within its pages for the generations to come. The 1988 Eagle is a canvas for the year, and the staff which designs this book struggles to com- pile all of the memorable events of that year. Bermudian Springs High School experiences its share of special days and every days. The theme of the 1988 Eagle has been dedi- cated to each day of 1988: A year in the life of an Eagle.” V Theme 3 Typical Day At Bermudian A Sampling Of Student Life L The source of our nourishment See what lunch does. When we look back through our years here at Bermudi- an Springs, we will not only remember the special events like the dances, pep-rallies and assemblies, but also what went on here every day. The teaching, learning, working, and interacting that went on within the walls holds the true memories. So many times we complain about the lunches, class- es, and homework we must face every day. When we look back, however, we will surely see that we actually had it pretty good. This is a behind-the-scenes look at what goes on every- day here at Bermudian Springs. Our spirit is not only reflected on the field or court, but also in our everyday interactions: the typical day. Tomorrow's leaders today What's cookin', good lookin'? 4 Typlcal Day Teel the brain waves in Biology. Shoot for two. Bat 'em and smile. Mow's it growln'. Wade? Another hour, another class Say aahh! Typical Day 5 Days Of Style We've Got The Look This year's fashion ranged from denim to lace. The familiar look in the halls was lace ribbons in hair and scarfs draped over the shoulders. It was these accessories that spiced up even the dullest outfits. A more casual but popular look was denim. Denim showed up in the form of jackets, dresses, shoes, and pocketbooks. Denim was popular this year be- cause of its casualness and versatility. Other familiar looks were flannel and concert shirts, flannel shirts were worn in numbers because they too were comfortable, and they provided warmth on cold days. Concert shirts were worn to express individual views of favorite rock groups. Mot only did the student body express themselves through their dress, but also through their hair- styles. Hair sculpturing became popular. The terms stripes and Bosworth became defined. Some athletes even got their initials or jersey numbers shaved in their hair. Mo matter what was worn, one was sure to be in style because diversity and variety were in this year. (top) Laurie Larson models the look of head-to-toe lace. (bottom right) The comfortable versatility of flannel is displayed by these busy workers in the library. (above) Iced denim is the fabric of the year used in jackets, skirts, dresses, and jeans. 6 rashion (above) Sweatshirts decorated with organization motifs are consistently the style in casual wear. (right) Hairstyling of the year: stripes, letters, and numbers became the style in cuts. (above) Brand-name sneakers are always the style; Nike and Reebok are the popular makers. (top left) Styles in flats saw the popularity of texture, the return of penny loafers and traditional docksiders with a twist: designer colors. (bottom left) Draped scarfs: the perfect accessory for a solid sweater. (below) Famous makers of jeans, candy, and beverages got into the business of full lines of sportswear this year. Looking Ahead Building For A Future Day Bermudian Springs High School is looking to the future—in our students and in the institution itself. Renovations to the high school will begin in the sum- mer of 1988. The school, built in 1960, needs a few changes because of the growing student body. The following are some of the tentative plans: One end of the interior courtyard will be enclosed. The second floor of the enclosure will be a new library, while the first floor will be a new computer room. Also Rooms 126 and 226 will no longer exist. The original library area will be converted back into classroom space. The chemistry and biology labs will be renovat- ed with modern equipment and furniture. The current weight room will be expanded to accommodate the growing number of students striving to keep fit. A re- medial gym will be added in order to make room for extra physical education teaching stations and for those students with special needs. The home econom- ics suite will be redesigned, and the music room will be changed to double its present size. Room 127, currently the health room, will be joined to an addition for large group instruction. The future of Bermudian Springs is looking bigger and better. Mew facilities will make for new learning experiences for the up and coming graduating classes of Bermudian Springs School District. The Class of 1992, next year's freshmen, will see a new era unfold at B.S.H.S. during their four years here. 8 Future Seacard Seacard Seacard Seacard- Seacard. Seniors ll Spirit Week Days Filled With Fsyching Up This year the Student Council planned anoth- er great Spirit Week. On Monday students roamed the halls in either sweatsuits or their Sunday's best for Dress Up or Dress Down Day. Tuesday was Class Colors Day. Stu- dents displayed class pride by dressing in col- ors such as blue, lavender, aqua, or silver. Wednesday was a down-to-earth Farmer Day. Thursday was a chance for students to express their true selves with Bermudian's first Goofy Day. Friday was Jersey or Red and Gray Day. Everyone crowded the halls with school spirit. Friday night, following the Homecoming pa- rades, the Eagle cheerleaders put on one of the best pep rallies ever. They were accompanied by the famous Boogaloo Crew. The five members, Don Chupp, John Chupp, Chris Sheffer, Nathan Stoner, and Lee Wicker ignited the crowd with their Boogaloo Chant. The cheerleaders had a contest to see who would lose her five lips first. Losers Theresa Glad- felter and Tracy Rupert were each punished with a pie in her face thrown by Bill Wheeler and Rick Eisenhart. After the pep rally, the students and alumni moved to the field where a bonfire sparked even more spirit for Saturday's Home- coming festivities. Spirit Week 13 Homecoming Day '87 An Exciting Moment - A Beautiful Day Saturday, October 10, 1987, was filled with activity from deco- rating cars to psyching-up for the game. All four classes compet- ed in the annual car decorating and poster contests. Surprisingly enough. Freshmen captured first place for their car. Juniors went on to win first place in the poster contest. The 1987 Homecoming Court consisted of Missy Basehore, Wendy Boyer, Theresa Gladfelter, Tracey Myers, Angie Reynolds, Lisa Smith, Kim Tyson, and Tammy West. The 1986 Queen, Angie Black, crowned Tracey Myers as the 1987 Bermudian Springs Homecoming Queen. Theresa Gladfelter followed as first runner-up and second runner-up was Kim Tyson. The Cagle football team fought to the final seconds of the game, but came up two points short against the Waynesboro Indians resulting in the score of 12 to 14. Homecoming '87 drew a close at the Annual Homecoming Dance. This homecoming will surely be remembered by many as one that brought out the true meaning of Eagle pride and spirit. Homecoming 15 Last Days Seniors Count The Days Of Their Last Year Well, this is it folks!” The Class of 1988 is marking off the days of its last year at Bermudian Springs High School. Soon the Seniors will be saying last goodbyes to their alma mater. Through four years of growing up and growing together at B.S.H.S., the Class of 1988 has pro- duced many leaders, movers, and doers. Such am- bitious personalities will move on to greater heights of excellence. These key people have created the spirit and pride that Bermudian is noted for, and they have provided role models for the underclass- men. Each and every Senior has contributed to the environment at Bermudian. Memories flood the minds of the seniors as they reflect on graduation. Remember the first day of school? Remember being a little freshman? It seems so long ago.” Each day of the past four years has been a build- ing block. The foundation that has been laid at Ber- mudian Springs High School will remain with the Seniors as they attend college, pursue careers, mar- ry and raise families. Bermudian Springs High School will live on and be remembered forever by the Class of 1988. 16 Senlors Seniors 17 While posing for the Who's Who picture of Friendliest , Wendy finds herself frustrated by John. Class Advisers: Mr. Lloyd Wagener and Mr. Doug Myers. Who's Who In 1988 Whenever Kim Tyson and David Smith have faced a problem or an obstacle in life, they have overcome it through academics and various extra-curricular activities. Also these two seniors have shown strength and leader- ship. It is for these reasons that the Class of 1988 has voted them Most Likely to Succeed. There are two members of the Senior Class whose musical talents have out-shone us all. Jason Kutz and Kim Miller are these two mem- bers who have been voted as the Most Musi- cal. Whether it is the band competitions, con- certs, or the spring musical, Jason and Kim can always be found enthusiastically leading the way. This year's school spirit rose to new heights, and you can rest assured that Don Chupp and Angie Balek were a part of it. It has been through Angie's spirited success in cheerlead- ing and Don's continuous support of school ac- tivities that the Senior Class has recognized these two individuals as the Most Spirited.'' Most Talkative, best describes John Peters and Tanya Harbold according to the Class of 1988. John and Tanya have a real knack for the cut of conversation. Whether it be talking during a study hall or debating with a teacher, it seems these two always manage to get their word in. John White and Wendy Boyer have been chosen as the ''Friendliest'' by the Class of 1988. These two seem to have an unique ability for making friends and includ- ing everyone in on the fun. So if you happen to see a small crowd in the halls, you just might happen to spot John or Wendy at the center of it. Whenever you are having a rotten day, sometimes just a smile can cheer you up. Jeff Showers and Angie Reynolds have grins that can brighten the gloomiest days. That's why Jeff and Angie have been chosen as having the Best Smile.” Once their infectous grins have split their faces, you can't help but smile back. Whether it be football, volleyball, basketball, softball, or track, you can bet to see either Gary Stambaugh or Tracey Myers involved. Through hard work, determination, and dedication, Gary and Tracey have been able to excel best at their own games. They have both overcome numerous injuries to earn the title of Most Athletic,” by the Class of 1988. Everyone has days when nothing seems to go right. These are the days when it is best to find Mike Rohrbaugh or Michelle Wentz. With their cra- zy antics and wild jokes, these two can brighten anyone's gloomy day. This is the reason the Class of 1988 has chosen them the Class Clowns.” Ronald Leroy Arnsberger (Ron) . . . February 21, 1968 . . . Career ambition is to be a machinist . . . Seen with everyone . . . Under the student direction of Drum Major Jason Kutz, the Eagles proved that Bermudian Springs is not a small school to be shrugged off. The Eagles took first place in two of their four competitions—snagging special trophies in High Marching and Maneuvering, High Percussion, and High Music Execution at Susquenita's competition. At States, the Marching Eagles took fourth place out of the six bands competing with a record score of 81.85. Also at States, our band received the High General Effect Visual trophy. As the band wrapped up its marching season, they prepared fora trip with the chorus to Walt Disney World in Florida. The Band and Chorus were invited for a six-day trip over Thanksgiving vacation to participate in Magic Music Days. Several concerts were also presented through the year by the band, including musical presentations celebrating Christmas and Spring. 1987 EAGLE MARCHING BAND Jason Kutz, Drum Major, led the Eagle band to victory. Band 65 Magic Music Days Band St Chorus Go To Florida The Senior High Band and Chorus received a Christ- mas present a month early this year. Over Thanksgiv- ing vacation 132 students, 13 chaperones, and 47 par- ents boarded five charter buses to travel to Florida to perform in Walt Disney World's Magic Music Days. The excitement of the students the morning they left was equal to that of fans viewing a sporting event. It was cold on Wednesday, Movember 25, but no one could wait until they could get out of their sweats and into their summer clothing. Riding a bus for twenty- two hours was a new experience for most, but time was passed by playing games, listening to music, talking, and trying to sleep—but to no avail. The band and chorus arrived in Orlando, Florida ear- ly Thanksgiving morning. The beautiful summer-like day was spent at River Country, a water park adjacent to The Magic Kingdom. That evening they had an un- forgettable Thanksgiving dinner. After finally getting a good night's sleep at a Kissim- mee motel, the band and chorus left on Friday morn- ing for Walt Disney World. Preceding Disney's ’The All America Parade at 3:00 p.m., the Eagle Marching Band paraded down Main Street U.S.A. (lined with ap- proximately 65,000 tourists) with three other compet- ing bands from Indiana and Michigan. For the remain- der of the day, the group spent enjoying the Disney magic offered in Walt Disney World. Friday night be- fore they were ferried back to the buses, the band and chorus watched an electro-synthemagnetic musical light parade and fireworks over Cinderella's Castle. Saturday, November 28, was a busy day for both the band and chorus at Epcot Center. In the morning the Eagle Band marched through Epcot Center and then performed part of their 1987 field show at Showcase Plaza. The band set the stage for the performance of the chorus later that afternoon at 3 p.m. The chorus performed eight numbers (patriotic and Christmas) in Showcase Plaza enduring the 90 degree temperature. Three of the many highlights of their stay at Epcot Center were the gigantic golf ball, Michael Jack- son's Captain E-O 3-D movie, and a laser light show choreographed to symphonic music, dancing foun- tains, and fireworks. After the spectacular aerial show, the weary students were ready for another good night's rest. The next day, Sunday, was the last day spent in Florida before the trip home. The students were al- lowed to go to The Magic Kingdom or Epcot Center. The remaining day was too short. Everyone was trying to find time for the attractions they missed, such as rides, concession stands and souvenir shops, or just picture-taking. After an exhausting but highly enjoyable weekend, the buses were boarded for the ride home around 6:15 p.m. Layers of clothing were donned as the buses moved north for the 22-hour trip back. The five buses stuffed with Disney memorabilia ar- rived back at the high school about 4:00 p.m. Monday. Everyone was ready to get home and relax. The overall consensus was that the trip was worth the summer-long fundraisers and months of practice, but went by too fast. The everlasting memories created were recorded via film and sou- venirs. This memorable trip was made possible through the hard work of many faculty members, chaperones, parents, and invaluable community support along the way. 66 Florida A Talented Group Chorus Performs At Disney World Much anticipation and excitement was found in the Senior Chorus this year. The ninety-eight member chorus had a busy schedule. On November 21, our chorus hosted and per- formed at the Adams County Chorus Festival. Another highlight of this year was the chorus traveling to Florida over Thanksgiving. The Chorus left November 25 and returned Novem- ber 30. While in Florida, they performed at Walt Disney's Epcot Center's Showcase Plaza. The trip was made possible through several fund- raisers—such as, hoagie and barbecue chick- en sales, car washes, bake sales, donations, and a lot of hard work. Amidst all of this, the Chorus still found time to practice and perform for the Annual Christ- mas Concert on December 13. Another highlight of the year was the presen- tation of the Eighth Annual Spring Musical. From January to March the Chorus was busy getting ready to perform My Fair Lady.” It debuted on March 24 and continued through March 26, 1988. Then to end the busy year, the curtain closed on the Spring Concert on May 14, 1988. This was the last chance the seniors had to show their talents with the senior solos and the rec- ognition of the senior chorus members. The chorus' success is owed to the choral director, Mrs. Jane Johnston. Under her direc- tion, the chorus continues to excel in their talents. ______ Madrigals: (Bottom Row) Chris Boyer, Mindy Hinkle. It has been a year of hassles—damaged film, delayed photographs, and pressing deadlines, but the dedica- tion of the staff pulled the 1988 Eagle yearbook through the tough times. I would especially like to thank the following people for their hard work and devoted time: Missy Basehore, Nathan Stoner, and Don Chupp. Their talents and willingness to take on responsibility creat- ed a great support system and wonderful leadership for the rest of the staff. Led by Mead Coach, Dave Dries, the team started during the summer preparing for the up-coming season by conditioning and lifting weights. The squad, although they had a rocky start, was never outmatched by any opponent. The team battled and never gave up. Because of this, the record of 4-5-1 regained Bermu- dian's respect in the B.M.L. as a tough, hard-hitting football team. The highlight of the season was the come-from-behind victory against Biglerville at home. They were very competitive in the B.M.L. ending up with 10 wins and two losses. They were second to De- lone Catholic. However, they got revenge when they beat Delone Catholic for the first time, during District III Playoffs. They went on to earn the District III title by defeating Steelton, Delone Catholic, and Hanover. All saw plenty of action. Junior playmakers included Terry Kline, Brian Oswald, Ja- mie Railing, and Nathan Stoner. These players worked hard in the off season to reach their highest potential. Through dedication, they had helped the team to continue improving. The three-point field goal was new to high school basketball this year. Terry Kline and Gary Stambaugh led the team in this category. One highlight of their season was their win over Boiling Springs to cap- ture the first place trophy at the 5th Annual Christmas Tournament for the third straight year. Another moment to remember was John Peters scoring 35 points against Gettysburg. The squad endured long, hard practices, and a grueling twenty-two game schedule. Team members spent the season reinforcing fun- damentals and establishing team cohesion, pride, and continuing their winning tradition. The Eagles rose to the occasion and won two of the three overtime games. Five times the freshman Eagles came from behind after trailing in the fourth quarter to win the game. Beth Brillhart, Beth Kuhn, and Laurie Larson gained valuable experience in their first year. Kath Heid was also a positive factor. Jacqui Basehore adjusted well to the point guard position after Patty Myers moved up to Varsity. Jode Lemmon and Kathy Grim did a good job at strong forward and post. Sherri Smith became experi- enced at shooting guard and made a strong contribution. The team improved its man defense and shooting percentage. The attitudes were very positive, and the girls adapted to playing different positions and adversities. This experience will prove to be important to the future of the Varsity. The team members have developed fundamentals and have learned the importance of team work. The team worked on overcoming immense timidity in offense, and in turn their defense improved considerably. One highlight of the season came on February 18 when our Eagles took on Biglerville at Bream Fieldhouse on the campus of Gettys- burg College. The long hours were soon forgotten at the sight of the red, white, and blue ribbons that were received after evaluations. The camp instruc- tors taught the girls new cheers in order to continue improving upon their abilities. The squads set a good example for the cheerleaders to come. Those who remain will be challenged to maintain the excitement and spirit of the past year. Kim Miller The Basketball cheerleaders kick off a Jennie takes time out to smile for the chant. camera. Cheerleading 115 To the Class of 1988: At no prior time in our history has there been a greater emphasis placed on the value of one's edu- cation. Suddenly everyone is looking at the schools in their community with a critical eye wondering whether or not the schools are adequately preparing its young people. With each high school commencement exercise, we in the schools hope that we have done our jobs well so that our graduates might succeed. Yet we know that our responsibility is shared with others, especially parents, and that the student's attitude will play a major role in his or her success. To the Class of 1988 we can offer a promising outlook based on achievements of past graduates. However, the hightest goals are reached by only those who use the tools we have provided to their fullest potential. You have my best wishes in your attempts to at- tain your ultimate lifetime goals. W. Reese Lichtel Superintendent To the Class of 1988: The world you face as high school graduates is more complicated, more challenging, and even more exciting than ever before in history. Many op- portunities for success will avail themselves to you during your lifetime. Education will be the door to these opportunities, and your willingness to contin- ue to learn will be the key that unlocks that door. Calvin Coolidge reminded us that, The school is not the end but only the beginning of an education.'' Best of luck with your future plans. Herbert A. Phelps Supervisor of Curriculum and Instruction 118 Administration To the Class of 1988: Each day of your life builds upon the ones that preceeded it. That is why each day should have some real quality, some meaning, some experience that will undergird that particular day for the many that will follow. Too often we fail to set our sights and establish reachable goals that provide the impe- tus for striving to do well every day. Many of you have been working diligently in build- ing a firm foundation while others keep piling up day after day with nothing to bind them together and are in danger of having them collapse like a house of cards. To those graduates who have availed themselves of the many opportunities provided by your school over the past twelve years to build that strong base, I salute you. To those of you who have been simply piling up the days, I exhort you to find meaning and purpose and build a quality life. To each of you 1 wish the best of luck hoping that, just as this yearbook reflects your past, you will be able to reflect upon your life and say, well done. Robert M. Reed Principal To the Class of 1988: As your graduation from Bermudian Springs High School approaches, keep in mind that your educa- tion is really just beginning. Your commencement will mark the end of one phase of your education, but, in turn, it will mark the beginning of a learning process that will last for the rest of your life. Indeed, your success will depend upon the zeal and enthusi- asm with which you pursue future learning opportunities. Your education at Bermudian Springs was de- signed to enable you to build a solid foundation upon which you could construct a successful learn- ing future. The knowledge, skills, and values that you have acquired throughout your years at Bermu- dian Springs are the tools with which you can build a successful life. Your success, however, will depend upon your ability and willingness to continue to learn, and as a result, grow. Your educational foundation is solid. Your future awaits you. Knowing you as I do, I am sure that you will pursue the road to continued learning and ulti- mate success. My sincere best wishes to each of you. John J. The 1987-1988 Bermudian Springs Jr. High Girls Volleyball Team experienced and enjoyed a very successful year. The 9th graders, with an 11-3 record, had one of the best team records for their age group. From the beginning of prac- tice in February to the end of the season in May, this has been a fun team. The excitement gener- ated was due to the desire, loy- alty, and discipline that are part of the game of volleyball. The team responded to the rigorous skill training and the mental as- pects of the game. I'm excited as a coach to watch these ladies develop and grow as a team. I'm sure if they continue to work hard, they will add to the Bermudian volleyball tradition—a tradition that for these ninth graders is not far away as we are now gearing up for the upcoming fall season,” commented Coach Spertzel. It is a story of England's leading phoneticist (Professor Henry Higgins) and a poor cockney girl (Eliza Doolittle). Professor Higgins is challenged by his linguistic friend. Colonel Pickering, to turn this ungrammared girl into a proper speaking English lady. After successful trials with the professor and a good break- through in her language, Eliza is put to a test. She is taken to the racetrack with some very elite English people. The most crucial test is the Embassy Ball, where she is an object of much admira- tion and amazement. Songs from the musical include: The Rain in Spain, I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face, “Ascot Gavotte, and Wouldn't It Be Loverly? This year's cast included many students of the chorus and band.
