THE EAGLE BERMUDIAN SPRINGS HIGH SCHOOL YORK SPRINGS, PENNSYLVANIA VOLUME XXII THIS THE 1984 EAGLE IS DEDICATED TO EDU- CATION AND, MORE SPECIFICALLY, TO BERMU- DIAN SPRINGS HIGH SCHOOL. BERMUDIAN’S VENERABLE TRADITIONS AND STYLE OF EDU- CATION ARE BLENDED TO FORM A COMBINA- TION UNIQUELY ITS OWN. AND WE, THE 1984 YEARBOOK STAFF WOULD LIKE TO RECOGNIZE AND THANK EVERYONE WHO HAS CONTRIBUT- ED TO THIS SPECIAL COMBINATION: THE AD- MINISTRATION AND FACULTY WHO HAVE IN- BUED BERMUDIAN WITH A SENSE OF MENTAL ACUITY AND LEADERSHIP; THE AREA RESI- DENTS WHO HAVE SUPPLIED BERMUDIAN WITH MORAL SUPPORT AND CITIZENSHIP; AND MOST OF ALL THE STUDENTS WHO HAVE PROVIDED BERMUDIAN WITH THE PHYSICAL AND SPIRITUAL STRENGTH NECESSARY TO EN- DURE, A STRENGTH WHICH REMAINS WITHIN US AS WE BOLDLY FACE THE UNCERTAINIES OF TOMORROW. They hate been chosen “Most likely to Succeed” in the class of 1984. Allan and Jenni have worked hard through their stud- ies and other challanges that they have come across at their time at Bermudian Springs. It seems that if there is any obstacle that gets in their way these two are always coming out on top. They let nothing stand in their way or hold them back from living life to the fullest. Allan and Jenni are known for taking every opportunity to succeed to the limit. Allan and Jenni have learned a lot at Bermudian and have accomplished many things that they will be proud of in their future. All their efforts and hard work will not be put to waste as they go on to further their education and lead a very productive and successful life. CUTEST COUPLE MOST ATHLETIC Hand holding, walking to class together, little smiles, and certain ‘7 adore you” looks are only a few of the reasons why Robin Anderson and Todd Herman have been chosen by the Senior Class as “Cutest Couple.99 Robin and Todd’s relation- ship is rare and is one that we all dream will happen to us someday. They are both lucky to have each other. From way back when, Joe Weaver and Chris Sebright have been found to be involved in some kind of athletic activity. Withstanding the grueling pain and tiresome practices. W hen the going gets tough Chris and Joe keep going, putting in that extra mile of hurdles or extra hour of jump shots. For their hard work and determination they have been chosen “Most Athletic” by the senior class. SHYEST There are two people in the senior class that always seem to keep in the back- ground of things. The reason they aren V at the head of the attention is because they are extremely shy. For this reason Angie Williams and Todd Auckey have been voted the “Shyest” of the graduating class of 84 by their classmates. When you first begin to try to have a conversa- tion with either of the two, you might find that your doing all the talking. But when you do get a conversation going with An- gie or Todd you will Find out how nice and friendly they really are. CLASS CLOWNS MOST SPIRITED Picture a dreary day. You are in a somber mood and there just doesn't seem to be anything in the world that could cheer you up. Suddenly, two people have you laughing so hard that tears are rolling down your face; and you are in a fit of hysteria by something they said or did. There are two such people in the Class of 1984 that have these qualities who were chosen as “Class ClownsKelly Harbold and Mike Duncan. With these two crazy, hilarious people around, there is definitely never a dull moment. Kelly and Mike have such a keen sense of humor that it is impossible not to laugh along with them. If you would happen to hear someone yelling ecstatically or giving their total support at sports events on the sidelines or in the stands, you would probably be hearing either Carolyn King or Steve Kline- dinst. These two people have been voted “Most Spirited” by their classmates. Carolyn and Steve are always able to get the cheers started and keep them going. Whatever the sports event you can always count on them to be giving their all in rooting for our team. They both let everyone see or hear how much spirit they really have. They know just when the crucial moment is and know how to let the team know their behind them. MOST ARTISTIC Each person has their own special but different way of expressing themselves. There are two people in the senior class that are able to use their vivid imaginations and artistic abilities to do so. These two people are Rick Cashman and Tina Phillips. They have been voted the “Most Artistic” of the senior class. CLASS BOOKWORMS In the class of 1984 there are two individuals who spend tremendous amount of time reading and they are Diane Weidner and Doug La Rue. You can almost always find them in the library doing research or you see them somewhere with their noses in any type of book from Dostoevsky to Vonnegut. If you were need to know something about a book, an author, or some- thing interesting to read, just go to Diane or Doug and they can give you advice on any of these subjects and for these reasons they have been voted “Book- worms ' of the senior class. MOST TALKATIVE Before homeroom, most students stand around their lockers and converse, but some students talk a “little ” more than others whether it makes sense or not. Jody Keech and Earl Linebaugh always have something to say. When your in class, the teacher is always asking someone to be quiet, you know who he's talking to. Jody and Earl always say “Hi to you in between classes, and always strike up something to talk about. 8 MOST MUSICAL BEST PERSONALITY CLASS Every senior class has two people that always seem to be humming a new song or tapping their feet to a song in their heads. This year, these two people are Tyra Pyles and I)oug Wolf. Tyra al- ways had an interest in music as a child, listening to the sound of music at least five times. Doug can trace his music interest back to his preschool years. His mother knew he would be a drummer when he started banging on kitchen pans and pots. Tyra and Doug have a talent in which they can use to entertain people. Someday these two may be seen on T. V. or heard on the radio. FLIRTS Vo matter where you are or what you are doing, there always seems to he someone who just makes everything so pleasant. They have such a welcoming air about them that a person is automatically drawn to them. There are two people like that in the Class of 1984. Michele Lawrence and Jeff Painter have been chosen as having the “Best Personality “by their classmates. These two really have out-going personal- ities and make everyone feel comfortable and part of some- thing. With their personalities Michele and Jeff are likely to get along in any situation. Did you ever take notice to two individuals in the Class of 1984, who just can't stay away from each other. or for that matter, any member of the opposite sex? People who always have a flirtatious gleem in their eyes and walk down the hall with an out-streched arm around a fellow classmate. For this reason Corey Trostle and Renee Smith have been chosen “Class Flirts.“ They give true meaning to “reach out and touch someone. “So whenever somebody comes up behind you and slips their arm around you, you'll know its got to be Corey or Renee. 9 BEST DRESSED Because of their chic way of dressing the two people in the Senior class that are most likely to catch someone's attention in a crowd are Andrea Hunt and Dan Showers. They have been chosen by their classmates as “Best Dressed. Mo matter what the occasion may be, these two are always noticed for their outstanding and stunning appearance. Their clothes are up-to-date and the latest fashion styles. Andrea and Dan dress as they want and their excellent tastes are reflected by the unique outfits they wear. Although Andrea and Dan come to school looking sophisti- cated and deb inair, they also have a personality to match their outward appearance. They can be found in a crowd of a million. As soon as anyone sees either Andrea or Dan they are impressed with their superb taste in clothing. BEST SMILE Have you ever noticed when your walking down the hall, some people al- ways ha e something to smile about. Even on a rainy Monday Kim l.au and Colin Campbell smile. Kim has a cute innocent smile and Colin has a devious grin that can't be missed. These two have a wav of making stupid situations seem humorous. Their secret to always being happy is taking an “It doesn't matter attitude. Kim and Colin are always seen together, showing off their pearly whites. 10 IN MEMORIUM THEY GAVE THEIR SONS’ TO THE LOVING CARE OF GOD, WHO WALKS FOREVER BY THEIR SIDES TO HOLD THEIR HANDS AND BE A LOVING GUIDE. THEY GO PLACES WHERE WE CANNOT TROD. GRANTED TO THEM MORE JOY THAN SORROW, MORE HOPE THAN DOUBT, MORE LIGHT THAN DARK NO THOUGHT OF YESTERDAY NOR OF TOMORROW. MAY AN ENDLESS SCOPE OF NEW HORIZONS MARK THIS FINAL VOYAGE FROM EARTHLY CARE WHERE THEY WILL FIND HAPPENINGS WE CANNOT SHARE. L.W. WAGENER Kenneth F. Why do I get so upset over words? After allthey are just words. But oh! how they can hurt, cut deeply, and leave such a scar! But worse than cutting words are no words at all. The silence, the aloneness . . . How can I bear it? My head throbs with tension; for I know no answers. And waiting . . . For things to happen And hoping they never will. Why must I be pulled two different ways, behind and ahead? Behind me is innocent childhood; safe, comfortable, predictable. I'm past that now . . . but how I have longed to return to .. . In a moment of tumultuous uncertainty, I'm afraid to go ahead. Ahead of me lie mysteries. I'm afraid of the unknown; of facing it alone. But alone it must be. For I am what I am; Or what I must be. “That’s life ' people say. I don't know what Life is . . . I'm still searching desperately. For life’s meaning, I realize, life is Hope . . . Then a Bonfire at the High School. The students showed their spirit and shared their hopes of winning the football game with their schoolmates and friends. The following morning preparations were made for the big day. Students from the ninth, tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grades were putting specially planned decorations on their class car. Student Council was setting up for their bake sale, and the Homecoming Candidates were being photographed by Roberts Stu- dio. The bleachers were filled with supporting fans. Bermudian students, including the band and cheer- leaders, teachers, and alumni and football players families were all giving the team moral support until the final second. It was a tough and close game, but in the end it was 27-21, Waynesboro. The halftime festivities included the coronation of the 1983 Homecoming queen and the announcement of the winners of the car contest. Freshmen were 1st, Sophomores were 2nd, Juniors were 3rd, and Seniors were 4th. The Homecoming Candidates were Robin Ander- son, Jeannette Becker, Jody Bruggeman, Carolyn King, Tyra Pyles, Chris Sebright, and Renee Smith. The retiring queen, Sally Balek, crowned Robin An- derson the 1984 Homecoming Queen. Tyra Pyles was first runner-up and Renee Smith was second runner- up. Although the loss of the football game was a dissa- pointment there was still anticipation for the Home- coming Dance, which was a modest success. Mark Juliana from W.F.O. Studios D.J.’ed and everyone there had a good time. HOMECOMING 1983 16 Corey Trostle returns the kickoff. H e should serve man-kind. Hail to thee Bermudian Springs. Hail to thee both red and grey, Here we learn to be courageous. As you help us on each day. Thank you for the education, That true concepts do provide. And for training that’s unending. As we meet the world so wide. And as we go through life’s long journey. To an end we can not see. We’ll not forget our Alma Ala ter. In a land so rich and free. Donna Romer Black 51 CLASS Scribbled numbers screech across my ears, scraping and seeping deeper into my irritated mind. Crazed calculations create greater confusion in my tired amorphous thoughts. Probing problems aggravate my puzzled pencil as their meaning becomes more meaningless. Rigorous operations stomp and stagger like daggers in my brain, singeing and searing my senses. Chris Sebright One of the more colorful classes at Bermudian is Mr. Ristine's Advanced Biology. To the left, Cyndi Lupo removes the lungs of her fetal pig named Janet and above Karen Brothers and Mike Bloss examine the liver of their pig. (ft did not have a name.) Probably the best known classroom in the school is that of the Suspentional Tutorial Assis- tance Program, tThis black and white photograph does not do justice to its yellow walls.) sart 53 LIBRARY The library is probably the quietest room in the school (except maybe during 1st period on Thursday mornings). Almost everyone comes in at least once a year to research a report or essay, and Mr. Kowalski and Mrs. Blocher are always their to lend a helping hand. ■Q V 3- v„. STUDENTS OF B.S.H.S. Even though Bermudian has a relilively small en- rollment it has no such thing as a “typical” student. At its diverse student body is one of the many things that makes Bermudian what it is. 56 WHAT’S IN AND WHAT’S OUT IN 1984 FAVORITE CARS: Mustang, Trans-Am, Camero, Corvette LEAST FAVORITE CARS: Pinto, Volkswagon FAVORITE T.V. The season lasted from mid August to No- vember. During a normal practice miles were usually covered, sprints and other strenuous calisthenics were used to build up their endurance for their meets. The Boys Cross Country team had a season of 3 and 7. This record does not depict the time and effort these athletes put into their sport. This year Dennis Myers, a senior, had several notable accomplishments. He placed 2nd at the BML Meet, 1st in Districts and 23rd in States. Two varsity runners will be returning next year. The gaining support from last year's four girls to this year's team is hoped to continue. The runners had to put in much effort in their season to make up for the lack of runners. Powell and C. Tate Hockey conditioning began on the 18th of August. A combination of skill and enthusiasm won the first league game for the girls. The teams high hopes carried them through a frustrating season, and they took it upon themselves to work as a team. Each game demanded more and more and the girls attitudes changed to a more serious one. Under the coaching and support of Mrs. Powell and Mrs. Tate the varsity record was 4-4-2. The jayvee record was 2-7-1. The team will lose only 3 senior so 8 letterman will be returning and a better season next year is anticipated. 65 fighting for the hall taking the ball down the field Ron l-T. Duncan, D. Spa hr. D. Only a handful of girls came out for the team, which often resulted in a weak bench for the Junior Varsity Team. On November 4, 1983, Bermudian held it's first Halloween Dance. The dance had to be held after all Hallows Eve due to other events that happened around that time hut not one of the people in the record had lost their Halloween spirit. Alumni Mark Juli- ana. of W.F.O. Studios, spun records and kept everyone up. dancing, having a good time. Kim Lau dressed as a witch, Rick Cashman as Kermit the Frog, and Lori Nel- son as Miss Piggy, all won prizes in the Costume Contest, which had dozens of en- trants. Feeling that the males in the school were being discriminated by not having a contest of their own comparable to the events as Homecoming and Sweetheart Queen Contests, Student Council sponsored the hallo ween contest. The 5 entrants in the first ever contest were Daryl Silsley, Mike Duncan. Jeff Painter, Colin Campbell, and John Cook. The highlight of the dance was the crowning of the king who was Colin Campbell. 1983 I la Ilo eon king - Colin Campbell CHRISTMAS CONCERT On Sunday, December IS, the Senior High Chorus and Band performed their Christmas selections for 1983. Everyone tv as in the Christmas spirit that day-you could just feel it in the air. The chorus started the concert with the traditional song “Silent Sight” in which the audience participated along with them. The candles that each chorus member held added a special glow to everything. A select group, the Madrigals, sang two selections after the chorus. The band came on to perform their musical numbers with the sound of quality. Then the chorus and band did a combined number called “Festival of Carols.” The combination of chorus and band talent made the song meaningful. Lastly, a song that has been a tradition at Christmas concerts was sung. “Hallelujah Chorus” was the cue for the alumni to come forth to sing along, and there was an enormous turn out. This song ended the concert on an excellent note, and everyone left with the spirit of Christmas in their heart. It’s time for the program to begin 94 Amy looks for her place in the music The Madigrals sing All eyes on the director? The Future Business Leaders of America (F.B.L.A.) and Dis- tributive Education Clubs of America (D.E.C.A.) organizations with other schools to help students become more familiar with the business world. The “B” Club supports the athletic teams by sponsoring Parent’s Days and providing refreshments at the games. The Press Club publishes the school newspaper “The Eagle Eye” which keeps everyone up-to-date on what’s going on. A new club activity is Intramurals, where students compete against one another in such sports as Basketball and Soccer. Other Bermudian Sports related organizations are the Varsity and Tennis Clubs. Members of the French Club learn about the customs, foods and language or France. The Chess Club spon- sors a tournament every year to determine the best player in the school. And for the musically inclined there is Band and Chorus, and Jazz Band. Bermudian has something for everyone, and many benefit from their club experience. 97 STUDENT COUNCIL As Student Council President, have had the opportunity to work with some of the school's most talented people in helping to organize and run some of the school's activities. This year in addition to the traditional events - Homecoming, the Christmas and Sweetheart dances, the Red Cross Blood Drive - we spon- sored some new ones such as the Halloween dance and King contest and the Beach dance and by adding new activities and keeping old ones, we have met the wants of this generation's students without losing Bermudian's heritage. We were not perfect in our endeavers, but we did do our best to improve ourselves, we sent delegates to Student Council Ex- changes, Forums, and Conventions. And we tried to develop better relations between the Student Body and the Faculty and Administration, because only with unilateral cooperation can the school be best served. The band’s first field competition at Susquenita was marked by a first place trophy for the Eagles. This was an omen for the future events to follow. The band’s opening song was “El Tigre, ” a fiery song that psyched up the crowds. Then “Here’s That Rainy Day’’ was presented next, featuring Dave Hoff on trumpet. This mellow mood was broken when the concert song “In the Stone’’ was played. The band was supported throughout the year by the member’s parents, and this support shown in the band’s final number. In the final song “Over the Rainbow,’’a homemade rainbow (made by the parents, and especially Mr. Gerald Mickey) was displayed at the song’s climax. With each performance the band continued to improve under field commander, Roger Miller. At Northern’s and Southwestern’s field competition’s the Eagle’s ruled. This momentum built during the parades in Dillsburg (2nd), Get- tysburg (1st), and Hanover (5th). The band finally peaked on a cold November 5th afternoon at the state competition in Hershey Stadium. Energized by the largest crowd in the stadium they took third place. Field Commander R. Miller Executive Council: 1st Ron - M. Duncan, I). LaRue Back Row - R. Miller, M. Boyer, T. Pyles, T. You have endured through good times and had to earn a Bermu- dian Springs High School diploma which represents a significant ac- complishment in your plans for success and happiness in the adult world. Over the past several years, our high school diploma has become a more valued document as graduation standards have become increased and as high school graduation has taken on more importance to future employ- ers. Earning a diploma, however; is only a first step in reaching one's chosen goals in life. W hile it can be predicted that success is not likely to find those who have failed to earn a diploma, it cannot be assumed that graduating from high school will guarantee a lifetime of happiness. The degree of satisfaction achieved will depend upon the amount of effort and desire invested. We have found that, as a rule, our students who really have a desire to succeed will accomplish their goals. The school has provided these people with the skills necessary to compete in post-high school education or a chosen career and many students have chosen to take advantage of the education provided. It is my sincere wish that each graduate will achieve his or her chosen goals and will enjoy a lifetime of happiness. W. Reese Lichtel Superintendent School Hoard Members: Row I Dean Hoffman-Treasurer. Mel in Worley-Secretary. Cary Shank-President. Earl Phillips-Asst. Secretary, Row 2 Ceorgene Bloss. Andrew Altobelli. James Lerew, Neil Hickoff. Lois Patka. Board member missing: Mac Lott 11) To the Class of 1984: Robert M. Reed Principal Bermudian Springs High School will lire in your memories forever. You should be proud of what your school has given to you and equally proud of the legacy you leave as individuals and as a class. It is impossible for me, or anyone, to detail what your tenure as a student at Bermudian Springs means to you; for each person is unique in his capacity for learning, appreciating, culling the good from the bad, using one's talents, accepting or rejecting help and yes, feeling pride. Whatever you feel for your alma mater, and however much worth it has in your estimation, be careful not to bandy its name about for it is a good school and has done much for many. Likewise, I would caution those who would herald its name loudly to remember that no school is beyond improvement. Homer, the poet, wrote, How vain, without the merit, is the name.99 This brief quote has application for you in your future relationships with your school. I hope that you find in your endeav- ors a means of adding merit to the name of Bermudian Springs High School. You can do this by being happy individuals, by being industrious persons achieving goals which will bring you respect and honor. I challenge each of you to be successful and then your high school will bask in the glow reflected by the class of “84”. Best wishes and good luck. Robert M. Reed Principal To the Graduating Class of 1984: Currently each of you are undergoing an important develop- mental stage terminating pre-adulthood and beginning early adulthood. This early adult transitional period will find you questioning the nature of the world and perhaps, most important, your place in it. You will Tind existing relationships being terminated with close friends and groups. Although this period of your life may cause occasional sadness, it is also a preliminary step into the adult world. Now you must make important decisions governing adult living. Anxiety and frustration will confront you; however, you will overcome all of these obstacles because you have prepared well for this period of time. Best Wishes, Gerald J.
