The Eagle Bermudian Springs High School York Springs, Pennsylvania 17372 1983 Volume XXI The 1983 Eagle staff would like to dedicate Volume XXI of the Eagle to the farmers and produce growers in our school district who contribute generously to the yearbook fund each year by serving as patrons in the adver- tisement section of the yearbook. Many have a genuine interest in and concern for the abilities and interests of the students here at Bermudian; a number of them are either parents or grandparents of Bermudian students, and some were even students in the Bermudian Springs School District at one time themselves. To these people, the yearbook staff would like to say Thank you for the continued interest and support of not only the year- book, but all Bermudian Springs School Dis- trict activities. Far from the frantic and manic pace where plastic tubes of neon dance frenetically in dead-end monotonous design; Far from the dark and smoke-filled caves where dissonant tones of music bounce perfunctorily from stone deaf walls; I chance upon an open space: an alien dimension of symphonic silence and slowed serenity. I savor the solitude of greens and browns in infinite symmetry and perfect tune. And I applaud the anonymous artist whose foresight has afforded me this momentary sensory pleasure. Beverly Sweger A Rural Setting in Adams County Doug McCauslin and his hogs get acquainted The Harold King farm outside York Springs 2 The Miller farm outside of East Berlin The countryside, quiet calm and serene. A fresh breeze slides over me as the leaves in the trees whisper softly. Here and there, I see a white dandelion drifting by me or I catch the fresh scent of a wild flower. In the distance, I see an old wooden fence creeping around as if to trap this beauty for itself. Now, as the sun sets, I see the cows trudging homeward in their single- file line and I am left in the twilight quiet, calm, and serene. And each year, just when the water seems to be covering the tops of everyone's heads, a miracle occurs - nobody drowns I Somehow, the work always seems to be finished in time for the deadlines and every- body receives their yearbooks in May. This year was no exception. There was the usyal procrastination resulting in last minute, after-school meetings the week before dead- lines and huge headaches for the editors. The big question running through everyone's minds was, ''Is all of this really worth it? Now, while leafing through this book, all of the staff members should agree that yes, it was all worth it! — The editor 1983 Eagle Yearbook Staff: Typing Staff : K. Sheffer, editor- (standing), T. Mummert MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED Pat Shank and Cindy Guise have been chosen Most Likely to Succeed due to the fact they have the uncanny ability to triumph over any struggles they may face. These two are always in line for new and exciting challenges and with their hard work and skills, they will surely succeed in everything that life has to offer. Pat and Cindy have set the example of reaching for the stars in the Class of 1983. Good Luck I Who's who in t he class of 1983 BEST PERSONALITY SHYEST Did you ever wonder at people who were witty, charm- ing and like a breath of fresh air ? Whether they're seen in the halls, sitting at a desk or walking down the street, they always have a cheery smile and a friendly, Hello, just for you. The Senior Class have found two such people — Sam Mummert and Mary Grim have the Best Personalities. Believe it or not there are some shy people in the Class of 1983. Tim Fetrow and Pam Yohe have been voted Shyest because their quiet and pleasant personalities add to the senior class. Once you strike up a conversation with these two though, you'll find them to be rather outgoing. MOST FUN There always seems to be a huge flock of people laughing and being rowdy around Dana Bollinger and Rick Wrights. And, no wonder, with their fun-loving personality and love of ex- citement who can resist being in their company and enjoying every minute of it. For this they have been voted the Most Fun of the Senior class. MOST ATHLETIC Aches and pains, seat and determina- tion. That's what has made Drew High- lands and Beth Lehman the great ath- letes that they are. Through the years, these two shown a lot of loyalty, effort and self-discipline. They have played an important part in making sports at BSHS successful. For this they have been chosen Most Athletic. Who's who in the class of 1983 CLASS FLIRTS Every class has some individuals who have an extra air of friendliness about them. The Class of 1983 has two such people — Carole Inskep and Scott Clark. They can always be found with an arm around a classmate or an out-stretched hand to a friend. Most of all, they spread a cheery smile and affection to everyone. So if you catch someone giving you the eye or seeming overly-friendly when they say Hello , you know its got to be Carole or Scott. 7 V !f-. • v •. I • - : MOST MUSICAL Bermudian Springs has a great deal of musical talent and a lot of people who aren't afraid to express them- selves in music. Two people who are higher on the music scale are Dave Thomen and Kelly Stoner. These two can always be found putting in extra hours behind the music stand refining their many musical skills. Who's who in the class of 1983 BOOKWORMS Try to pull Jodi Brough or Scott Eisenhart away from a book and you're asking for trouble. These two can always be found spending their time in the library or sitting alone concentrating on an excit- ing story. Because of the many hours they have spent with their nose in a book, they have been chosen Bookworms . MOST ARTISTIC If a picture paints a thousand words, Clifford Crone and Michelle Myers must have a lot to say. Put a pencil or a paint brush in their hands and they bring everything around us to life. Their hard work and vivid imaginations have painted a beautiful picture on the easel of life . MOST SPIRITED The Senior Class is overflowing with spirit and the two individuals most respinsible for this lively enthusiasm are Angie Taylor and Dave Snook. At pep rallies, on the sidelines or in the midst of athletic competition, they can be found giving 110% of their time and effort in doing all they can for BSHS. Who's who in the class of 1983 CLASS CLOWNS Some people seem to be unable to control their crazy antics and zany sense of humor. They can liven up a dull class, quiet lunch, or even a boring study hall just by walking into the room. Leo Cook and Lisa Harman possess this special talent for making people laugh, and for this reason the seniors have chosen them as Class Clowns . Their presence at BSHS has made everyday school life easier to handle. 9 Rural Travels On a brisk and breezy day, I watch the dandelions blow away And wonder where their solo flight Will take them traveling through the night. No map to guide them as they fly Across the fields beneath the sky. One journey each is all they dare But none seem worried, nor seem to care. Each one descends to its home on earth Where it sleeps through the winter and in the springtime gives birth . . . Spirit Week was full of life and constant action. During this week each class showed their spirit by wearing their class colors and spirit badges such as rain- bows, expressing a class motto and buttons, expresing throughts such as Kiss me I'm a SENIOR. On Friday everyone got in on the action of decorating lockers. At first there was resitation, then imagination went flying as crepe paper streamers canopied the halls. Beautiful tissue flowers as well as signs in class colors decorat- ed individual lockers. Spirit was surging through the veins of all involved, even some of the faculty members. The Senior Class added an extra touch by hanging a Senior Lane poster which the Senior Class members hurriedly decorated with their signatures. At the end of the day the results of the locker decorating contest were announced: first place - the Sophomores, second place - tie between the Senios and the Juniors and fourth place - the Freshman. The car decorating contest was a smashing success as well. Each class decorated a car to be used at halftime for the Homecoming activities. The spirit and pride of the week came to a climax as the football team defeated the Canners. juniors start to work on their lockers Even B Club takes a part 15 Homecoming 1982: EAGLE SPIRITS SOAR AS FOOTBALL TEAM CONQUERS THE CANNERS. Every Homecoming is met with a flurry of excitement and an atmosphere of spirit is in the air. The traditional Spirit Week got the whole student body into the festive mood with each class displaying their class colors. New this year was a locker decorating contest where each class displayed their creative talents on their group of lockers. The Sopho- mores won first place. Seniors and Juniors tied for second and Freshmen placed fourth. Then the long awaited for October second dawned bright and clear with the Eagles facing the challenge of the Bigler- ville Canners. The crowd backed our team to the end and the Eagle football players fought and played tough. Their determination paid off with shutting out the Canners 13 - 0. Halftime celebration held its own sense of excitement and anxiety. The eight Senior Homecoming Queen candidates arrived in cars decorated by each class and a float built by the Senior class made its debut. Finally, the time came for the crowning of the annual Homecoming Queen. Retiring queen Beth Boyer was on hand for the coronation of Sally Balek as 1982 Homecoming Queen; first runner-up was Mary Grim and named second runner-up was Dana Bol- linger. After the football game, everyone ran home and prepared themselves for the Student Council-sponsored Homecom- ing Dance. The entertainment was provided by a DJ from Q106. This year's Homecoming was a memorable event and each student will remember it for a long time to come. As we look upon our past years here at Bermudian Springs, hopefully we can all see the challenges we have conquered. As we look to the future we should use our achievements as the corner stones on which to base our future successes. They represented our school and community to the fullest extent. Under his first year of coaching the Eagles, Coach Gerard Lawrence, along with Coaches Dries, Goff and McCllum, led the team to a victorious season. The Eagles lost their opening game against Chief Logan but bounced back to win the remaining nine games. This year the Eagles took the Blue Mountain League title; the first time Bermudian has done that in any sport. The team worked hard the last two weeks of the season, determined to win the play-off game against Holy Name. The Eagles held their own but unfortu- nately the game ended in the opponents favor with a score of 0-7. Still, we can be proud of our Mighty Eagles. This year there were sixteen seniors on the squad. They taught their lower class teammates how to win, be proud of themselves, and never settle for anything less than being at the top! The Seniors great leader- ship influenced the entire team. There will be plenty of talent returning for next year's season, and we know that we'll be well repre- sented. This year was no exception when it came to the Ninth Grade Football Team. Through the coaching of Mr. VanArtsda- len, Mr. Spertzel and Mr. Heineman, the team was taught knowledgeable skills and abilities. Each game was played with determination and aggressiveness. The team should be proud of their four - two record, because each member put forth their best. Much time and work was put into their practices and sign making evenings. We know for sure that their effort and spirit was well appreciated. We've got spirit 59 Cross Country Under the guidance of Coach Larry Redding, the 1982 Cross Country team commenced training before the start of school. With a lot of guts and indurance, the team competed admirably in the B.M.L. Each member put forth great effort and determination in every meet resulting in three well- deserved victories. Rick Wrights, the only senior and first year member, ad- ded depth to the team. Also, Dennis Myers deserves recognition for his victorious season. He placed fourth in the B.M.L. Conference, 11th in Districts and 18th in States. Added to the team this year were four girls who put forth their most. It is hoped that next year more girls will be out for the team. Determination and enthusiam played a ma- jor role in both teams' wins this year. The girls had an opportunity to perform in a night game against Littlestown. This was the first night field hockey game in Adams County. The team would like to have more. Coach Powell, assisted by Mrs. Tate worked hard to make the teams shoe improvement as the season went along. The gruel- ing season ended with the Varsity having a 3 - 7 record and the Junior Varsity having a 5-3-2 record. There will be eight return- ing lettermen to aid in a winning season next year. Under the direction of new coach, Mr. Kirkpatrick and a lot of new talent the Eagles got off to a promising start. Mr. Fisher was the coach of the junior Varsity squad. Both the J.V. squad under the coaching of Mrs. Reever, and the Varsity squad un- der the coaching of Mr. Dismuke, did well this season. The girls spent many grueling hours pre- paring for the season, at basketball camp and at the many afterschool prac- tices. The cold, snowy, wintery day of December 19, certainly added an extra special touch of the holiday spirit to the atmosphere of the annual Christmas Candlelight Concert. The program began with the audience participating in singing the Christmas Carol Silent Night , as the Senior Chorus made their en- trance into the auditorium. The Chorus, directed by Jane Johnston, presented several selections to the audience, one of which was directed by student teacher, Tony Wastler. The Madrigal Group performed two songs also. Following the Madrigals, the band, directed by William School, pre- sented four numbers. The concert came to an end with the band and the chorus joining together to perform the traditional Hallelujah Chorus from Handel's Messiah. From student council exchanges with other schools, student forums, and student council conventions have come many new ideas for projects of service to our school and community, such as sponsoring a day for those students eligible to register to vote, providing assemblies and movies for students, organizing a dance-a-thon to benefit St. Jude's Children's Hospital, sponsoring dances and organizing Homecoming activities. In order to continue and improve upon these activities, it is imperative that the cooperation and support of each and every student, faculty mem- ber, administrator, and the members of the community be present for each activity the student council undertakes. Only with this kind of support and the dedication of each member of the student council can the objectives of the organization be met to the satisfaction of all concerned. Under the able command of rookie field commander David Thomen, and with excellent leadership and juidance pro- vided by the senior members, the band started its season on a high note, (no pun intended) Despite sunburn, insect bites, and sore mus- cles, band camp went extremely well. Everyone worked diligently to learn the field show in record time. Overall, the band had a very suc- cessful and rewarding year. The Eagles took high honors in both parade and field competi- tion. The highlight of the season came on the weekend of November 13-14. On Saturday night, the band garnered top marching laurels at the State Championships in Hershey. On Sunday, the band travelled to Philadelphia for the East Coast Regionals, where they competed against bands from eight other states. This marks the first year that the band was qualified for tegional competition. Much of the credit for the band's renewed spirit must go to Mr. William School, the new director. He instilled a sense of pride, enthusiasm, and self-confidence in each and every member of the marching unit. There was a new attitude evident in every minute of rehearsal-an attitued of optimism and hope for the future. Our only hope for the future is that Mr. Bill will remain at Bermu- dian Springs for many years to come. He has become both a great leader and a great friend to all who know and admire him. Our chorus here at Bermudian certainly pos- sesses these qualities. They put a lot of time into practicing to put on various concerts throughout the school year. This year the chorus will use its talents and show its utmost determination even further while presenting the musical Fiddler on the Roof. Shank 98 Clubs FFA Clubs have always played a major role in the life of the student body. They provide everyone with a multitude of oppertunities to experience things not taught in class. Clubs such as F.B.L.A. and F.F.A. give students the opper- tunity to get involved with their future careers now. Tennis Club and Dance Club are just two of the clubs that let students sharpen their skills at one of their favorite forms of recreation. The Wrestlerettes and Varsity Club help give the Eagle Atheletes the support they derserve. The Stage Crew and B Club help out on school productions and at the sporting events. Parlez-vous Francaise? The French Club does, and they become more fluent in the language every day. The Newspaper Staff keeps the entire student body up to date with its monthly publication The Eagle Eye. In the Home-Ec room F.FH.A. is cooking up a storm learning all aspects of household engineering. Over in the library, the members of the Chess Club are pondering their next move and the dedicated musicians of the school get a chance to blow their horns in Stage Band. Everyone learns a thing or two in his or her own respected club, but more importantly, everyone has fun. Row 1: D. Shank, J. Behney, M. Keckler, D. Laughman, D. Hippensteel, B. Keech, C. Behind the scenes, the EAGLE EYE staff is made up of a group of young, energetic and dedicated students. You can easily pick out the staff members - they're the ones running around with a notebook in hand interviweing people, snapping pictures, or printing in the graphic arts room trying to meet the month's deadlines. Yet the students aren't the only ones responsible for the school newspaper, they are advised and supervised by Mrs. Tate and Mr. Gutacker. Typist - S. Henry 104 Eagle Eye '82-'83 Photographers: S. In return, we have felt an obligation to preserve an environment of mutual respect and cooperation among all of the clients of the schools. It is our hope that, in so doing, we have given every student the right to obtain a quality basic education. Graduating seniors, as they leave our schools to enter college or a career, may find that this spirit of cooperation is not universal. They, therefore, must be able to adjust to the varied environments they will encounter in their travels; improving conditions where they can and adjusting to those which cannot be changed. We have been very pleased with the accomplishments of past graduates and we are confident that the Class of 1983 will represent our school district equally well. W. Reese Lichtel Superintendent W. Reese Lichtel Superintendent School Board Members (Seated) M. Worley, C. Shank, M. Lott (Standing) ). Lerew, G. Bloss, A. Altobelli, D. Hoffman, N. Hickoff, E. Phillips Robert Reed Principal To The Class of 1983, First, let me congratulate you for having completed twelve years of schooling. There is, however, a difference between finishing high school and getting a high school education. Even you may not know for certain to what degree you have accom- plished the latter at this point in time. Secondly, you will soon discover the importance of one course or another, the value of teachers and friends, the meaning of experiences lived. It is really the beginning of a more self directed part of your life and all that has gone before will serve as a base for that which is to come. You have had the opportunity to study and learn, to win and lose and to experience every emotion of which a young adult is capable. But no matter what you have done, what you have seen and heard; no matter what others think of you now, be it good or bad, you will be challenged every day to succeed. I think you are ready to become productive citizens of the community but please take nothing for granted. For as Demos- thenes cautioned, Every advantage in the past is judged in the light of the final issue. Best Wishes Robert M. Reed Principal To The Class of 1983: Congratulations, throughout your high school career, you have proven yourselves worthy leaders who have represented our school very well. Throughout your years of education, you were given guidance in preparation for graduation. You have met many challenges and have proven to have the stamina to withstand these obstacles. Many more challenges will confront you and will require additional vigor. In the future, continue your determination towards success, and you will continue to be rewarded. There appears to be a strong correlation between work and success. The harder you work - the more success you will receive! Good Luck. Gerald J. Jody Asper Morning . . . silent as an empty stage: A single leaf floats gently through the air, like the notes of a mellowing musician. A small stream runs smoothly through the forest, like a dancer performing grandly for the audience. A young fawn showers briskly in a pool of water, like an actor anxiously awaiting his cue. As chipmunks chatter to each other in an early morning rehersal; And squirrels begin gathering nuts in preparation for Winter's opening. Suddenly a fanfare sounds overhead, breaking the silence of honking, as the geese fly south. Shafts of sunlight break brightly through the trees, like spotlights---searching, blinding the animals for a moment. But soon they adjust confidently to the challenge of a new day: a new performance. An autumn day The lingering sun shines A warm remembrance of siimi Upon my shoulders. A wayward breeze carries the of woodsmoke Leaves crunch and crackle ber lome. The sweet scent of wild flowers as enticing as perfume. Yellow straw stacked in the barn sleeps contented until winter's use. Cows graze lazily in green pastures as peaceful as their surroundings. Tired wheat fields, damp from the morning dew, stretch in the fresh air. Suddenly the sun rises over the horizon warming and lighting the earth. The rooster slowly ruffles his sleepy feathers and sounds his alarm. Everyone awakens as the day begins. Leo Cook Kandy kicks the winning field goal Blue Mountain Football Champs Bermudian Springs won its first Blue Moun- tain League title, which was well deserved. It was the first title in any sport for Bermudian. The game was against Gettysburg, one of our toughest schools. Randy Tosten's 36 yard field goal during the first quarter gave Bermudian the 3-0 victory. The team put forth much effort and many hard hours of practice which paid off in the end. The Eagles were coached by Mrs. Powell and Miss Mendler, who pushed the girls to do the best to their ability. But in the long run it was worth all the hard work and sweating be- cause the Eagles started out winning. They won their first two games and lost the third but they still looked on for victory and more wins in the seasom. The softball team ended its season with a 4 and 5 record. And looks very promising for next year since has only three seniors graduating. The softball team with all of the returning girls will be the team of the future. 1 iB Heid, K. Harbold, J. Wolf, D.
