The Eagle Bermudian Springs High School York Springs, PA 1982 Volumne XX Time is remembered Reflections of Time Remember the time we first learned to walk And soon afterwards we learned how to talk; Not a thing was safe from our fingers then; Before they knew it, we were counting to ten. Remember the day we first started to school? Our parents kissed us good-bye and made us feel like fools; They saw we had nametags, and made us promise to be good, And while crossing our fingers, we told them we would. The next six years flew by us so fast; Before anyone realized, they were over and past; Gone were the recesses and blackboards to erase; We were moving up to a more important place. When we got to high school, we were in for a shock; The bathrooms didn’t have doors, and the lockers didn’t lock; The notes never ended, and neither did the tests; But we kept trying to do our very best. Somehow we made it through these years, Forming life-long friendships with teachers and peers; Of the time we spent together and the time we spent apart, We will hold many memories forever in our hearts. This is why we chose “Time” as the theme for this year’s yearbook. Like sand through an hourglass, time can not be slowed down or stopped, however, “The Eagle” gives the reader a glance back into the past and recall special memories of the 1981-82 school year. The staff sincerely hopes this book will be cherished for years to come. Wagener Who’s Who in ’82 Everyone dreams of some day becoming rich and successful. Traci Lobaugh and Mark McClain have been voted “Most Likely to Succeed” because they have worked hard at their studies and have earned not only good grades, but also good friends. With their efforts and skills they will be a big success in life. Remember in fourth grade when Mr. Mickey taught us all to play those plastic recorders and we all thought we were the next best thing to Boots Randolph? Well, thanks to Jeff Howell and Michele King, Bermudian can now brag about its terrific musical talents. Singing in the choir and playing an instrument in the band takes a lot of practicing, sour pitches and two left feet. For their “oom-pah” spirit, Jeff and Michele have deservedly been acclaimed, “Most Musical.” There are certain people in school who are known to be “extra friendly and seem to get along with everybody. Scott Wolfe and Missy Thompson have been voted “Class Flirts” because they never miss a day without being unnoticed. Being an athlete takes a lot of hard work, practice and a determined spirit. Whether it’s a touchdown on the football field or a goal in the hockey cage, you can count on two seniors being there to score for the team; Sandy Shive and Denny Shultz. Sandy and Denny have always exhibited the ability to go that extra mile when it comes to sports. For their athle- tic talents, the senior class has recognized them as Most Athletic.M There are always faithful followers as well as partici- pants in activities. Marlin Ensor and Stacy Thoman have mastered both. These two people will always be found putting all they’ve got into supportive action for our Eagles. We have voted them Most Spirited.” Jim Hoak and Beth Boyer are the kind of people everyone enjoys being around. You’ll never exper- ience a dull moment or lonely hour with these two present. They are just naturally talented in the area of being fun.” We have nominated them Most Fun.” Well. B.S.H.S. no longer needs a social directory. If you wanna here the latest gossip, just see the Ann Landers and Jack Ander- son of Bermudian; Tina Hartlaub and Jeff Long. Tina and Jeff always seem to be on top of the latest rumors and social talk of the school. That’s why the senior class has voted them, Most Talkative.” Hey, did you hear about ... ? There are some people who can have fun no matter where they are. Whether in a busy chorus rehearsal or boring study hall. Steve Lecrone and Suzie Stevens have the talent to keep you laughing in the aisle. They have been chosen class clowns. Well, we asked Liz and Roger to at least pull their noses from their latest novels for this picture, but I’m afraid that we were unsuccessful. Some people, like Elizabeth Myers and Roger Fahnestock, just love a book, and for those of us who are less knowledgeable about books, this couple can recommend anything from Shake- speare to Vonnegut. That’s why the senior class has nominated them. “Bookworms.” Hey. did you just see someone peek around that corner? Why. there is someone there! It’s Robin Linebaugh and Ron Becker, the senior classes’ “Shyest” couple. Well, not really. Robin and Ron are down right nice once you can get them to talk! There are some people who seem to agree and get along with just about everyone. Joel Garcia and Kathy Holtzinger are no excep- tion. With their warm and kind per- sonalities, they have been voted “Most Agreeable.” 8 Marlin Ensor Mary Ellen McElwee Kathy Holtzinger Wanda Ardrey Kevin Reynolds Don Speelman jC Time. Mr Wagener and Mrs. Johnston take a break. 1981 Homecoming Queen. Beth Boyer Andy crowns the happy Queen. Beth Boyer reigns as 1981 Homecoming Queen I was in a stupor as for what to write delineating 1981's Homecoming activities. Glancing through old accumulated yearbooks, the past memories just could not compare with the warm feelings that I’m sure this past Homecoming has left on all of us. The week before Saturday. October tenth, was a flurry of class colors, paper, paint, and friendly competitiveness between classes. The final results of the poster contest were announced at a very spirited pep rally; Seniors were first; Freshmen, second; Juniors third; and Sophomores, fourth. As Friday came to a close, the air grew frosty and cold, but not chilly enough to melt the warm spirit of the Homecoming candidates, band, football players, and cheerleaders as they paraded through our hometowns. The parades were followed by an enthusiastic bonfire that set high hopes for the next day’s game. Homecoming dawned crisp and sunny as the game kicked off at 1:30. By halftime, fingernails were being nibbled away as control of the football was sporadically passed from the Eagles to the Waynesboro Indians. By halftime, the score was tied at 0-0. Then the band stepped onto the field in all white as the Homecoming candidates were chauffeured into the stadium. Dale Heineman. our announcer, introduced to us: Beth Boyer. Tammy Griest. Traci Lobaugh. Lynne Pennypacker. Missy Shelleman. Sandy Shive. Sharon Thoman. and Stacy Thoman. Fingernails went down even farther as Sandy Shive was announced second runner-up. and Sharon Thoman first runner-up. By this time the anticipation was unbearable as Beth Boyer was finally crowned Homecoming Queen of 1981 by Andrea Becker, retiring queen from last year. Then the tension grew unbearable as our Eagles superbly scored seven points against the scoreless Indians, the game coming to a heartstopping climax in the end. Everyone rushed home to prepare themselves for a fun night of music and dancing in the gym that evening. The entertainment was provided by D.J. Rex Walter as everyone relaxed and did a few turns on the dance floor. Homecoming this year turned out to be a superb success. The great memories we’ve accumulated from this year's Homecoming will be some of our most treasured high school experiences. I will always cherish these memories. School, as everyone knows, is not an easy step in life. However, it is a very important one. It is the stepping stone to everyones future. As graduation approaches. I know that every Senior Class member has the ability and knowl- edge to make their life a success. Dennis lezzi, brought a lot of pride to the community and school district. When the season opened, it looked as if Bermudian wasn’t going to be a contender this year. After losing the first two opening games the Eagles didn't look too impressive, but they turned things around. The Eagles, with their pride at stake, won their next six straight games. Suddenly they found themselves sitting alone on top of the Southern division with a good chance at taking the crown. But. as it turned out. the Eagles tied the Gettysburg game which meant they had to beat their arch-rivals, the New Oxford Colonials. The Colonials took advantage of the many Eagle mistakes and ended their hopes for the championship. The last game of the season, with no pressure on their shoulders, the mighty Eagles totally dominated the Canners of Biglerville and ended their season with a respectable 7-3- 1 and second in the Blue Mountain League. Eagles place second in division. Varsity Team Row 1: M. Ensor Row 2: J. Hoak. J. Hunt Row 3: A Hartzell. S. Lecrone. D. Shultz Row 4 S. Wolf. D. Speelman. B. Russell. B. Smith. T. Brown Row 5: D. With their attitudes and abilities, they can build up their knowledge by gaining experience for the upcoming years at B.S.H.S. Through all the hard practices, which paid off. the team ended up with four wins and three losses. The coaching of VanArtsdalen Spertzel. McCullom led the team to a winning season. This is definitely spirit week. The week of October fifth was designated “Spirit Week” by the Student Council. This was the time when football season reached its height of excitement. Monday, the freshmen flaunted their class colors of laven- der and white by wearing clothes of that color. Tuesday was the sophomores chance to display their class pride in Burgandy and cream. Wednesday, the juniors covered the school in silver and blue. Thursday, the seniors surprised everyone with their meticulously decorated green and white lockers. The seniors also wore their class colors, mint green and white that day. Friday proved to be the climax of the week with an exciting pep rally, where the results of the poster contest were announced. The Christmas spirit was brought into full swing on December 13 with the Christmas Candle- light Concert. The program began with the cho- rus processional and audience participation to the Christmas favorite “Silent Night.” The Cho- rus proceeded to entertain the audience with several selections, two of which were directed by the student teachers. Virginia Patterson and Charles Thompson. One song featured two so- loists. Tyra Pyles and Eric Smith. Following the Senior Chorus, the Senior Band played three numbers. The audience joined in singing Christ- mas carols as the Senior Chorus retook the stage. The highlight of the show was the Chorus’ crowd pleaser “Fruitcake.“ which showed each section “doing their own thing. Elizabeth Myers Time and pleasure. I feel that Student Council President has been a very challenging and rewarding experience for me. It has helped me learn how to accept and handle a lot or responsibility. As Student Council President. I have had the opportunity to work with the entire student body and some of the faculty members. I have learned that it takes the support of every student and also the support of the faculty and administration to make any activity a success. However. I feel that Student Council is a very overlooked organization. The mam reason may be that people don't realize exactly how much Student Council really does for the student body. The Student Council has many yearly obligations. It sponsors all of the Homecoming activities including the Homecoming Dance, parades, bonfire, poster and car contests, etc. It has also succeeded in putting a juke box in the cafeteria to provide lunchtime music. These are only a few examples of Student Council's accomplishments that I think should be recognized. This past year I have had the pleasure of working with a very dedicated and hardworking Student Council. I hope in future years students will learn to understand more about and realize the importance of a good and successful Student Council. I also hope students will get more involved with Student Council activities. To any student who has the ambition to run for Student Council, and all of the future Student Council members. I wish the best of luck and success. Respectfully Beth Boyer Student Council President Student Council — Row 1 Mary Grim. Traci Lobaugh. Beth Boyer. Angie Taylor Row 2 Becky Lescalleet. Amy Spangler. How can I believe There’s no look remembered in your eyes No memory of our goodbyes. But when I sleep You are keeper of my dreams. There we wander, hand in hand, down the corriders of night as you show me the way to loveliness. A gold disc moon hangs in the sky powdered with stars. I am breathless at the beauty your voice unfolds. Night wanes and, one by one, stars dis- appear leaving the heavens jeweless and dark. I am alone in that silk and soundless sea. I awake — will I still believe I can view the sunrise — sunset too without a thought of you. L.W. Wagener Administration and Faculty School Board and Administration Devote Their Time Formal public school education, through high school graduation, occupies only approximately one-fourth of each person's life span and success in life will depend more on what is achieved after high school graduation than before. While formal schooling may end for many with high school commencement, education through experience will continue. Life is a continuing series of'experiences which formulate and revise the thoughts and actions of individuals. Experience is the key to goal setting; knowledge is the vehicle with which goals are achieved: and time is the resource needed to thor- oughly mix the knowledge and experience into success. As Helen Keller said, We can do any- thing we want to if we stick to it long enough. I am confident that your education to date has provided you with the foundation for future growth, and that much of your remaining lifetime is devoted to the pursuit of honorable goals. W. Until now you have been required by dependen- cy and by other restrictions placed upon young adults to conform to the wishes of many. Graduation from high school is an achieve- ment, won by you. which begins to lift the bur- den of restrictions. I congratulate you upon completion of high school. I also caution you to weigh the many circumstances which will influence the impor- tant decisions with which you will be faced. By all means, guide your own destiny and do not be untracked by the proddings of those who have little or no stake in your future. You decide what is best for you. Do not let things happen to you by chance when a firm decision is needed. You decide. Charles Dickens wrote that “there is no more miserable human being than one in whom nothing is habitual but indecision. Robert M. Reed High School Principal To The Graduating Class of 1982 As you graduate this year, much time and effort has been devoted to accomplish this goal. As you have discovered, time is essential to properly mold your outcomes correctly. In the future, permit yourself ample time to make sound decisions. Be patient, not in haste, and your finished product will be complete. Remember, if you become impatient, how long it has taken you to be where you are now. Good Luck! Gerald J. This event was spon- sored by the Student Council. 1 South Pacific” On April 2 and 3 at 8 pm the Senior Chorus successfully presented the popular musical and love story, “South Pa- cific. The setting was a South Sea Island during World War II. The scenery of palm trees, flowers, and grass skirts certainly added a touch of tropical reality to the atmo- sphere. The plot of the story centered around the courtship of Nurse Nellie Forbush French planter Emile De Becque, and the love between Lt. Joseph Cable and Liat, an innocent Tonkinese girl from the island of Bali Hai. A note of comedy was also added to the story by a Tonkin- ese dealer. Bloody Mary and Seabee Luther Billis, who were constantly in battle over everything from grass skirts to shrunken heads. The story depicted the love between people and the ter- rors of war. It climaxed with the tragic death of Lt. Joseph Cable which made Nellie and Emile realize their unending love. Seabees check out Bloody Mary's wares T. Lobaugh, S. Lecrone E. Smith, K. Miller, J. Murtorff French Girl 3 The 1982 softball season started with much enthusiasm and much effort put forth at the many practices, drilling on the basics, and preparing for the first game of the season. This year the team had an assistant coach. Randy Griest. who helped coach the J.V.'s as well as assist Coach Powell. There were many close games, but. as usual, the opponents always seemed to pull ahead in the end. The J.V. team had its chance up to bat at the three games scheduled, and in the Biglerville game Bermudian had its first and last softball victory of the season: 11-9. Although the varsity team record ended as 0-14. the spirit, enthusiasm, and hard work of each girl never ceased. It was a season which each senior and underclassman will remember for years to come. There were many games which the girls came close to win- ning. but unfortunately the opposing teams always managed to pull ahead in the end. Under the precise coaching of Bob Spertzel and LeeAnn Friedman, the teams always showed great skill and spirit in the face of defeat. With another year of experience under their belts, the returning members of the volleyball team hope to make the 1983 season a victorious one. Varsity — Row 1: S. Balek. J. King. T. Lobaugh. D. High hopes and hard practices started the season in the right direction. Although the team didn't win any games, they fought hard and came close to winning many times. Improvement showed from game to game and kept the team from being discouraged. With many members returning next year, each with another year under his belt, next season should prove to be very promising. Robert Forsythe Baseball team — Row 1: R. Forsythe. D. Speelman. J. We who knew you seldom saw the darkness within your fragile winter walls. Withdrawal now — impending night desends — and we watch helplessly, hoping. wondering why we never tried harder to reach inside your helplessness as you slid deeper into the icy arms of December — all alone. Bev Sweger Robin Kay Linebaugh April 27. 1964-January 21, 1982 16 A Passage I remember one day not long ago I went to a place of my childhood where once sparkling waters trickled and laughed over mossy black rocks. Flowing past a small boy who knew of forts and butterflies and forgotten flowers. Who could hear the wind’s songs and the hoot-owl’s lament while specks of sun played through the canopy of leaves on the crystal stream ... My memory’s mirrors no longer reflect. The creekbed has long been dry. Overgrown, cluttered with confused and tangled brush like the corridors of my mind; dark and shadowed by overwhelming present thoughts that blindingly erase the once simple world of a small boy’s forts, and butterflies.
