The Eagle i Growing was the theme chosen for the 1981 Eagle Yearbook. This yearbook is designed to help show how the students have grown over the years here at Bermudian Springs High School. Throughout this book are pictures and poems depicting the theme. We, the staff hope that this book of memories and cherished thoughts bring many hours of enjoyment to its readers. Growing A single seed divides — separates and becomes two One bends and stretches and becomes larger and larger One shrivels and strives to find life One is nourished and grows into a beauty One is neglected and becomes a weed. One is loved and cherished and is you. One is hurt and bitter and is me. Sue Martino WHO’S WHO IN THE CLASS OF 1981 The Senior class has chosen Sue Martino and Troy Wolf as the “Most Musical.” This talented duo has helped to make our music department a success by providing leadership and enthusiasm. Whether they’re singing in the chorus or playing in the band, Sue and Troy help to “keep the beat going.” We know these two Seniors as Jeri LaRue and Jeff Starner. But, with a little makeup, special costumes, and a spotlight, they can be anybody they want to be. These two have portrayed many different characters in the dramatic productions over the years. They’ve done a good job, and have been voted “Most Dramatic.” As for the future, Jeri and Jeff — break a leg! If a picture paints a thousand words, then Chris Stroh and Sherry Showers certainly have a lot to say. Much thought and patience goes into each work of art. They’re sure to create a masterpiece some day, as the Seniors have predicted by choosing them to be the “Most Artistic.” 6 I’m sure everyone will certainly agree that these two remarkable Seniors have put many years into hard- thought training to learn the skills of success. They sure have learned their skills well and are ready and eager to put them to work! Just look where this train- ing has gotton them — at the top, already! Who could this be? Why Diane and Robert, of course. They sure do make our Senior class a whole lot more complete! We wish them loads of happiness as they excel in life! Being a good athlete takes a lot of hard work, skill, and many sacrifices. Bill Aiello and Jenny Carson have certainly made many. With their good sportsmanship and determination in sports, they have shown true school spirit through out the years. That’s why they’ve been voted Most Athle- tic.” Who do we find sneeking around around corners as quiet as mice, yet as clever as fox? Their quiet and bright personalities sure do add something to our class! Shy? Well, not really once you get to know them — try to strike up a conversation with them sometime, you’ll find they’re right nice to talk to! Know who they are? Karen Reynolds and Ivan Stock- ham of course. We sure do wish them the best to come in the future! 7 Up, down, winning or losing, some people always stand behind our team. Carla Lehman and Jeff Schoolcraft have this quality, and have been voted “Most Spirited” for their unending support. Did you ever notice you have a hard time arguing with some people? It’s not that you can’t win, but there is nothing to argue about. So for their warm, kind, personalities, Andy Becker and Doug Campbell have been voted “Most Agreeable.” A dull class, a boring study hall, a quiet lunch, sets the stage for these two to let their talent run loose. They can brighten any part of the day with their crazy antics and humor. For this reason Kim Byers and Dave Luther have been chosen “Class Clowns.” 8 Bobby Wolfe and Kobie Gruver are two people who like to be extra friendly. They have been known to be seen through out the school with different people and that’s why they were nominated Class Flirts. Whatcha readin’?” These next two have been asked this question repeatively for they are the class of 1981’s bookworms. If someone wants a good book to read, just ask for a recommendation from Patti Timmer or John Trone. Did you ever notice that some people can brighten up your worst mood or most boring class? Brad Inskip and Tami Miller are two of these people. You never have to worry about being bored when your with these two because their pleasant and humerous per- sonalities never lead to a dull moment. Thats why they’ve been voted Most Fun.” 9 Bill Aiello I L Ivan Stockham To love is to scatter raindrops On a dry deserted land To care is to proffer moonbeams In the hollow of your hand To dream is to see an orchard Where only weeds have grown To give is to share a heart That once was so alone To help is to offer springtime Which promises new life After a bitter winter That shadowed someone’s life To grow is to always be Looking for a better way. It started with a rowdy pep rally Friday afternoon and the tradition Homecoming parades. The traditional thundershowers failed to dampen the spirits of those in the parades, and the dreary weather made the bonfire seem even warm- er. Saturday, October 11, was a brisk but sunny day. The Eagles started out slowly against Greencastle, and the score was tied 14 — 14 at halftime. The halftime ceremonies were highlighted by the crowning of the 1980 Queen. Everyone sat in tense silence as the results were announced. Second runner-up was Rhonda Ensor, and Winona Dissinger was first runner-up. Then the announcement came, introducing Andy Becker as the 1980 Homecoming Queen. Spirits were soaring at the start of the second half, and so were the Eagles. They fought hard and played well and walked off the field as winners. An exciting 28 — 20 come-from- behind victory! The day ended on a good note with a dance held in the gymnasium. Music was provided by the groupe called People.” Results from the spirit weeks competition was the Seniors taking first followed by the Juniors, Sophomores and Freshman. Homecoming 1980 will be long remembered. 1 st runner-up. During our years here at Bermudian Springs we were able to take on the challenge that the school had to offer us. Now, as Seniors we will have to take on the greatest challenge of all, life. As president I know that the class of 1981 will meet and conquer this challenge. SENIOR DIRECTORY William Anthony Aiello July 5, 1963 . . . We arouse them and shape them Into mocking monsters: our own hideous anxieties. Let my tomorrows lie naked, For in their nakedness is innocence. And let my tomorrows lie sleeping, for in their sleep come dreams. And in their dreams come vision and hope vision and hope. I.w. wagener 38 39 Academic Life Graphic Arts Mechanics? Blocking and rushing to the tune of Another One Bites The Dust our Eagles met one contender after another. Under the close and deter- mined eye of Coach Dennis lezzi, they were guided to many victories, lezzi, a newcomer to our school, took no time in becoming a true Eagle believer. The many long, hot, and weary practices paid off big with a great team effort guided by Brad Inskip, Bill Aiello, Doug Toston, and the other starting members. Add to that the numer- ous points accumulated from the precision kicks by Scott Dick and the many defenders who bit the dust under “Big Mombo” Jeff Schoolcraft and red hot Bill Aiello plus a super tough offensive line and you have the ingredients that made B.S. a number one contender in B. They had enough girls for varsity, but many times the ju- nior varsity played short. The girls hung in there really well. They put forth their best efforts in spite of these con- ditions and prayed for rain. This year the team had some alumnae come back for practices. The former players helped the girls better their skills by using the ones they learned over their years at B.S.H.S. 67 Cathy Thompson 68 69 Basketball consists of drives, fast breaks, foul shots and the whole bit. And our Eagles did a fine job of keeping the tradition of the game going. Though it was an extremely tough season, they never gave up and never forgot why they were out on the court. With only one starter returning, it was a season of rebuilding. Under the coaching of Eugene Segro and the veteran leadership of Todd Black, the Ea- gles had a prideful and respectable season. Being part of Student Council re- quires a great deal of time, dedication, and hard work. This year’s Council has tried many new things and did their best to ensure the success of each new activity. I have had the opportunity to be the president of this Student Council I would like to thank our advisor’s and other members of the faculty for their help with our various activities, and the entire student body for their participa- tion. I hope that in the coming years, students will become more involved with their Student Councils. Involvement will guarantee the success of a council. They began the 1980 campaign on October 4, appearing in the Big Springs Sounds of the Valley field compe- tition. The marching Eagles captured second place by compiling 56.7 points. The band also proved to be quite dominating on the street by placing first in both the Dillsburg and Gettysburg halloween parades. They also appeared in the East Berlin and Hanover halloween parades as well. The highlight of the season came on November 7. when the band traveled to Hershey Stadium to compete in the state championships. There the band performed their show one last time to bring home a respectable seventh place out of nine- teen competing bands. It was the first time a Bermudian Springs Band ever competed at a state level. Congratulations to the band and to Mr. Dietz for a very fine marching season. National Front Row 1. K. Harbold, J. Hunt, L. Lobaugh Hard concentration for good strategy is what the Eagle Chess Team do for a win. Under the direction of Mr. Dixon and two returning members the team worked hard for a good season. The two returning seniors contributed their leadership and wish the team a good season next year. John and Mark hard at it By the time a young person graduates from high school, he or she will have bridged the gap from childhood to the early stages of adulthood. During these years, a signifi- cant amount of growth will have occurred in each individual but in many ways the growth period will have only begun. Growth is defined as the gradual development toward ma- turity and maturity is described as being fully developed. We must assume therefore that the human being never reaches full maturity and in turn, the growth process con- tinues as long as the brain remains functional. Members of the Class of 1981 will mature at varying rates over the next few decades as each individual seeks to “become oneself” at his or her own pace. Those who prepared well for this independence through discipline and learning, will survive the initial years of adulthood better than those who were unprepared. Nevertheless, the unending nature of the maturation process provides a con- tinuing opportunity to attain independence, even though a slower pace is pursued. Keeping in mind that a person neither becomes fully mature nor completely independent, each individual must constantly endeavor to grow toward those ends. Self-sat- isfaction will come only to those who continuously strive to become better. W. Reese Lichtel Superintendent Row 1: E. Phillips, G. Shank, N. Nickoff, Row 2: M. Worley. D. Hoffman, M. Lott. P. Lerew, G. Bloss. G. Anderson School Board Administration 114 To The Class of 1981, It has been said that growth is the only evidence of life. As you know there are many kinds of growth; some very evident, such as your physical growth; and some not so evident, such as your mental growth. Both of these kinds of growth have been measured regularly during your school years. How- ever, most of you have reached the end of your phys- ical growth. But never let it be said that you show no evidence of life just because a formal education is ending for many of you. Education and learning are lifelong processes and I challenge you to grow as long as you live. Best Wishes, Robert M. Reed, Principal As you graduate, your education from Bermudian Springs will have formally ended. But, in your young life, growth towards the future has only begun. Each day you will encounter a new challenge, a new experience. Your preparation for this day will aid in your decisions; however, new experiences that you will gain, hereafter, will also assist you. We all have a tendency to view growth from only a physical standpoint. As we must be aware, it is in- deed much more than physical and is never-ending. Time is not the only ingredient that produces growth. It can also be proportionate to the effort involved. Effort is the difference between good and great. Bermudian Springs will always remember you for your academic, athletic and social contributions. Take what is has given you and develop yourself to become a better person. Gerald J.
