Through the eyes of the student, one picture may tell a whole story. The 1979 Eagle Yearbook Staff has chosen the theme “A Picture Paints a Thousand Words” to help everyone remember the events and happenings over the past year. Eagle 1979 is made up of every student here at Bermudian by having his or her picture placed in the yearbook. The 1978-79 Eagle Staff wishes everyone a happy year and hope for your satisfaction upon reading this. Thank you 3 Editor - Diane Myers Eagle Yearbook Staff 1979 Layout Staff - Editor; Tony Adams. Don’t forget the times you went to the Bandroom to practice, every chance you got. Helen Stambaugh and Mark Ehmry have really worked their way to the top. They are both fine musicians and therefore have been chosen “Most Musical.” Most Athletic Aches and pains and determination! That’s what has made Karen Myers and Dave Boyer the great athletes they are. They’ve put a lot of time and ef- fort into the sports program here at Bermudian. And justly so, have been voted “Most Athletic” This year the senior class has chosen by vote, classmates falling in the categories of: most musi- cal. most dramatic, most artistic, most likely to succeed, most agreeable, most fun. shyest, most athletic, bookworms, class clowns and most spir- ited. The students pictured on the next few pages are ones that the class feel are the most outstand- ing. They have added something “special” to the class of “79”. 10 Class Clowns Sarah Myers and Phil Keifer have brightened up many a classroom with their crazy, hilarious antics! They carry that unusual characteristic for making people laugh. For this reason they have been voted “class clowns”. Class Flirts Here's two people who don’t lack in affection or friendiness. So if you ever feel an arm slip around you while walking down the hall don’t be alarmed its prob- ably just one of our class flirts Lisa Speece or Jeff Smith, the two most lovable people around. Shyest These two you’ve seen peeking around the corner many times to make sure no one else was in the hall be- fore they've made a dash for their room. Who are they you say. Why they’re our class shyest Hoa Nguyen and Marion Miller who aren’t bad at all once you get them to talk. 11 Most Fun Lori Leer and Greg Starner have been voted “most fun” simply because - they are! Their pleasant, humor- ous ways can brighten up your worst mood or most bor- ing class. They really deserve to be voted “Most Fun.” Most Spirited Rah-rah-rah, sis-boom-bah may be the words you hear chanted by Val Auchey and Mike Stambaugh These two have been voted “Most Spirited” for their eagerness to help make our teams the best in the minds of others. Even when the skys are dark and gloomy they’re sure our team will come out 1 instead of 10. Bookworms These two aren’t worms they are just a couple of peo- ple who love to read books. And who do you think these two worms become when they pull their little noses out of the book. Why it’s Danny Hoover and Tammy Myers our Senior class Bookworms 12 Most Dramatic Our plays wouldn’t be anything without the hard work these two put into them to make them a success. We owe a lot to them, the rest of the cast and the director for the great plays we had throughout our High School years. Who do you think our Scarlet O’Hara is why it’s Kathy Wadel and her leading man Redd Butler who else, but Danny Sebright. Most Likely to Succeed There are always those students among us who really seem de- termined to achieve their goal. Dawn Keefer and Tom Chupp were voted “Most Likely to Succeed” because of their eagerness to suc- ceed in life. Most Artistic Lori Reese and Mark Holsopple have come a long way. They can still remember the days of finger paints and paint by numbers. But with the help and assistance of good art teachers along the way they have educated their talents to the point of excellence. This is the reason the Senior Class has voted them “Most Artistic.” Most Agreeable You know, there are always some people who can make the best of everything, and get along with just about everyone. Roxanne Herman and Dave Williams are two such people. Their likable per- sonalities have shone on a lot of us and for that reason they have been voted “Most Agreeable.” 13 14 15 16 Homecoming was really in the air as students made posters and signs in preparation for this greatly anticipated week. Everyone was buzzing with excitement. Would the powerful Eagle team win the game on Saturday? Who would be this years Homecoming Queen? The week would soon tell. Friday night came and so did the rain. As a result only the East Berlin parade took place. The York Springs parade and the bon-fire were cancelled because of the inclement weather. Homecoming began on a happier note the next day as the Eagles came soaring through the clouds to attain an 18-0 half-time score. Festivities began as the brightly decorated cars chauffering 8 lovely young ladies entered the field. Who were these beautiful girls? Why yes, of course, they were this year’s Homecoming Queen candidates. Michael Bennett, this year’s announcer, introduced us to: Lori Leer, Michelle Stambaugh, Lori Reese, Karen Myers, Kathy Wadel, Lisa Speese. Diane Myers and Helen Stambaugh. The tension could be felt as Kathy Wadel was announced 2nd runner-up then Lori Leer 1st runner-up. Then the moment everyone had been waiting for, Helen Stambaugh was crowned the 1978 Homecoming Queen by Sandy Forsythe last years queen. The Eagles went on to be victorious by beating the Blue Devils 34-0. That night everyone arrived at the school dressed in their Sunday Best. Everyone than discoed to the tunes of Osiris. And so, another happy Homecoming has come to an end. 17 Homecoming Lori Leer and escort Nevin Lehman Michelle Stambaugh and escort George Marks Lon Reese and escort Tim Magargle Karen Myers and escort Doug Black 18 1978 Sandy Forsythe and escort Jim Keller Kathy Wadel and escort Dan Shank Lisa Speese and escort Brian Wallace 20 Class Of 79 Class Colors: Ice Blue and Silver Class Flower: White Rose tinted Blue Class Motto: Today We Follow Tomorrow We Lead President: Dave Boyer Vice-President: Kathy Wadel Secretary: Helen Stambaugh Treasurer: Doug Black Advisers: Mrs. Topper. In view of past events it has been a frustrating yet rewarding experience. I have been in a position to see the entire class grow in wisdom and in knowledge with all the pressure anxieties and triumphs that high school places upon them. I feel that the Class of 1979 is now ready to accept the responsibilities of life and succeed in any facet in which they may enter. Dave Boyer 32 Anthony Allen Adams September 20. 1961 . . . Tony. Gary Reed SO Join the crowd 51 To The Class Of “79 It is extremely important that you occasionally look at the pictures and read the words written about you in this yearbook. You will want to reminisce, of course, but perhaps these pages will also help you determine whether or not you are making any headway toward the goals you have set for yourself. Others will be watching the course you run and will be able to note whether or not your ambitions are realized, your dreams ma- terialize and your goals are attained. Do not be satisfied with your present lot in life. Be determined to improve yourself and strive to reach the limits of your abilities. Be able to look at the picture you are painting with your life and be satisfied with the results. Best Wishes Robert M. Reed, Principal Although you the Class of “79 will have faint memories of the past, you will more remember those productive days of your senior year. The hard work that was done will be reminiscence at future reunions. Your yearbook theme, “A Picture Paints A Thousand Words , is what the world is all about. The picture that you paint of yourself to others will hallmark their feelings and trust in you. You soon will be entering into the future of your choice. None of you will paint the same picture; how- ever. the impression that you make will determine your success. Good luck! Gerald J. Soltis Assistant Principal 54 Sincere wishes of “Good Luck” are frequently be- stowed upon graduates at commencement time. While each person is affected to some degree with luck, good or bad, it is usually not the major impetus in one’s at- tainment of chosen lifetime goals. Persons who develop the proper attitudes and persevere in preparing them- selves for adult life are more likely to see their “dreams” come true. Schools have the dual responsibilities to teach basic skills and to disseminate knowledge. Knowledge is the end product of learning, and aside from the basic know- ledge needed, it is more important to learn how to think. The volume of knowledge is infinite and with changing technologies not all concepts can be taught before they are encountered. It is therefore, critical that each person be able to rationalize in a manner which will help to untangle the complicated life situa- tions he or she will experience. Basic education should be a process of building a foundation for further learning. While formal education may end with graduation from high school for some students, learning is a process which ends only at death. It is our hope that we have done our part in presenting you with the opportunities to establish a basis for con- tinued learning. Education is America’s investment in its youth and the country’s insurance for the future. W. Reese Lichtel Superintendent Board of Directors - Row 1: Kenneth Hankey. Gary Shank. The function of Student Council is to improve the school and community in anyway possible. The task of doing this is very difficult to accomplish without the help of the entire school. If Student Council is to succeed in its goal, the need for underclassmen to become more involved in school activi- ties is very important. One could come to school two weeks before the first day and see the football team hard at work, the band sweating away on the practice field, the cross coun- try team running its course, maybe even the field hockey team hard at work looking for a winning season and quite possibly, the cheer- leaders getting ready for that first big game. One may easily gauge the success of the season by the enthusiasm put into the opening summer practices. The enthusiasm is there this year as is the suc- cess. Who doesn’t remember a cheerleader and all the spirit they promote at games? Cheerleaders are usually remembered for having a big mouth, being loud and having a never ending energy used to make the Eagles strive for a victory. For football season this year our cheerleaders increased their number from seven to twelve and for basketball and wrestling they divide. So if you heard more noise this fall, there’s your answer. Under the supervision of Ms. Linda Topper our cheerleaders work very hard at supporting their teams as well as pro- moting school spirit. Our cheerleaders the are the backbone for Eagle s Spirit. We’ve awakened some fellow Blue Mountain League teams to the “tough defense and “quick of- fense of the Bermudian Springs Eagles. Randy Morris and James Brown both brought pride to our school. Forsythe 112 Gymnastic Team What kind of attitude do the members of the girl’s gymnastic team have after a 2 hour long grueling practice of straining every muscle in their bodies? They feel great! After 3 years of hard work they have finally received the recognition they de- serve. This year has been their busiest and their best. They have had many meets and are proud of their achievements. Most team members have placed in one event or another. Deb Perry has been selected to represent B.S.H.S. in the Tri-County Cham- pionships, which is a great honor. These girls are good, and hope to get better. Dec 18 Waynesboro J.V. Jan. 18 Carlisle J.V. and Cumberland Valley J.V. Angular Meet 27 Tri-County Novice Meet 1st row J. Behney. G. Wolf. A. Becker. K. Heid. C. Cook Alot of changes took place this year in the girls basketball program. The major change, was the new coach, Mr. Lenker. Hustling and shooting are the key factors of this indoor sport. These along with hard work, devotion and ambition make for a good team. The girls learned many new plays and moves to help them in their games this year. The varsity team consisted of two seniors, four juniors and three soph- omores. These nine girls worked hard to bring home some wins for Bermudian Springs. 114 9th Grade Managers: J. Asper. M.
