BERMUDIAN SPRINGS HIGH SCHOOL America has plunged into the computer age and we are here to stay. The 1977 Eagle Staff has selected the theme of expressions in an attempt to remind everyone of the human being instead of the number. Numbers, like names, are easily forgotten or ignored. It is the faces and personalities that we love and remember. Be- cause Bermudian Springs is still one of those schools where every- one knows everyone else, we dread the inevitable of being just one in a crowd. The pictures and writings in this book are a collection of joyous, sorrowful, aggravating and proud moments which none of us could forget. We hope you will recall the smiles, tears, frowns, and giggles of this past year as you read the 1977 EAGLE. Throughout this publication we would like to put emphasis on the importance that a person be able to express himself. We would like to show how each individual's technique is a great aspect to common communication between people. The staff would like also to convey our hopes and wishes that everyone enjoys the book as much as we did the experience of compiling it. EAGLE STAFF 77 Literary Staff—Rose Miller, Editor, Diane Myers, Linda Stahler Marty Mummert--Photographer Typing Staff--Pat Cunning- ham, Editor, Doris Ensor, Steph Hertz, Kitty Carptner Jean Stevens Deb Becker—Copy Editor Kathy Stimer—Senior Editor As much as we would like to, none of us can forget butterflies in our stomachs, shaking knees and a panicked loss of direction when we entered Bermudian as seventh graders. With pounding hearts, quivering lips, and wrinkled brows, we have waited in excitement and nervousness for a first date or important exam. Feet dragging and shoulders drooping mark our losses and disap- pointments in academics, sports, and love. Victory and success are shouted to all by our sparkling eyes, grinning mouths .and swaggering walks. The Seniors of 1977 have experienced joys and sorrows, pride and anger, and rivalry and loyalty during their years at Bermudian Springs. Both the hassles and the fun will always remain clear in the minds of the Seniors. However, it is the companionship, happiness and love which will remain closest to the Seniors' hearts as they take their final exit through BSHS' doors. Mr. Kowalski, Mr. Davidson Denise Griest, Pam Toffey, Greg Davis, Kim Spahr OFFICERS President—Pam Toffey Vice President--Denise Griest Treasurer--Greg Davis Secretary--Kim Spahr ADVISORS Mr. Kowalski and Mr. Davidson As president of the Senior Class of 1977, I would like to express my deepest appreciation to all the faculty, parents, and friends who have helped us reach our hard earned goal, graduation. Now we will enter the harsh reality of the outside world. Some of us will go on to college, some will be married, and others will choose still other courses in life, but we will always hold within us the knowledge we gained within these walls. Looking back on the past twelve years, we will always remember the happy times we have shared here. The memories and experiences of growing up together will be cherished within our hearts forever. Although, there are times when we deny this statement, there are real examples to uphold this belief. The stiff lip and reddened face of a study hall teacher display a very human trait. Who can overlook the per- spiring forehead, twisting facial features and the pant of a teacher psyched by his own inspirational lecture? Most memorable are the kind eyes and soft voice of a helpful instructor. It is the sighs of relief, maniacal grins, upturned chins, wrinkled brows, wide-open eyes, and patient smiles which will long remain in our minds. We thank these teachers for being more than just teachers; for be- ing friends and fellow human beings. To the Class of 1977: In the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson made reference to the pursuit of happiness as one dream he had for the people in our country. While some people feel he spoke of happiness as an end product many others feel that the ability to pursue a meaningful life of one's choice was envisioned by Jefferson. In today's society it is clear that those who choose to believe that happiness is a result of fortune or happenstance are frequently left bewildered while those who actively pursue a self-established goal are those who find the most happiness. Each graduating senior will shortly be thrust into an adult world and experience the corresponding demands which are placed on each individual in today's society. Those who have developed a life-time plan and have established goals to pursue should, in the final analysis, find happiness more readily than those who have no goals. It is my hope that our schools have prepared you with all of the basic skills necessary to succeed in your chosen life- time goal. W. Reese Lichtel Superintendent Board Of Directors; ROW 1; Gerald Ebersole, William Wenger, Fred Ebeisole, Melvin Worley ROW 2; Kenneth Hankey, George Anderson, Mac Lott, Gary Shank, Earl Phillips 30 It is highly important in this technological age in which we live to be able to make right choices; to be able to distinguish good from bad; to be able to perceive a wise course of action and not be fooled by the sugar coating of seemingly attractive offers and opportunities. Much of the course work you were asked to accomplish over the past few years was aimed at having you develop crit- ical thinking skills, make value judgements, analyze, build within yourself the attitudes needed for successful and happy living. You will be faced immediately with the opportunity to use the lessons learned through the reading, writing and innumer- able calculations made which you may have thought of as ex- ercises in futility. Please do not be deceived by persons and things. Be con- templative, be aware, be alert, weigh carefully all evidence and be purposeful in reaching conclusions. Make the best of every opportunity you have. Aesop writing before the birth of Christ said Beware lest you lose the substance by grasping at the shadow. This is my caution to you, the graduates of the class of 1977. Best wishes in every endeavor. Robert M. Reed Principal As you the Class of 1977 conclude this phase of your formal education it marks the beginning of a variety of lifetime ca- reers for all of you. It is hoped that the experiences and re- lationships encountered while a student will not only prepare you for your planned career, but have provided an inspiration to you as well. If in any endeavor you undertake, your contributions are the highest your capabilities allow, the results will be both rewarding and personally satisfying. Seeing your effort to not only do well but to do your best provide all of us at BSHS a sense of satisfaction and achievement. Good Luck! Greaser Day, and always selling something, are just a few distinguishing marks of an underclassman. Their eyes gaze at the Seniors with jealousy as they busily plan for their senior year. The student carry- ing half a dozen thick textbooks and actually studying in study halls, is usually an underclassman with a loaded schedule. The Seniors sigh, shake their heads', and shrug their should- ers at the underclassmen. Teachers laugh, yell and shake a warning finger at them. But the underclassmen continue with unabashed enthusiasm to uphold old Bermudian Springs' tra- ditions and initiate new ones. Wonder 63 Throughout the summer there is always the twinge of excite- ment and the need to re-engage in school activities such as hockey or football team. Anticipation, victory, defeat or revenge is sparked by one of these teams. There are always the eager eyes looking forward to the day of Homecoming which leads off with the football game. The high point of the day is the crowning of the Qugen. The Homecoming Dance, leaving sweet memories with all, closes an eventful day. Early in fall, the All-School Play is presented by student act- ors who are eager to represent our school with pride and dignity. The fall activities are an opportunity for students to begin their school year actively and enkindle them to continuous par- ticipation in future school activities. 66 HOMECOMING Our 1976 Homecoming activities began with the Homecoming parades in York Springs and East Berlin and the Bonfire where the football team, queen candi- dates, cheerleaders, and fans displayed an effect of school spirit that was overwhelming. Homecoming day, Oct. 16 promised to be sunny and cool, and we were not disappointed when it ar- rived. By game time the crowd was large and waiting for the game to begin. Our Eagles were playing the Greencastle Blue- Devils, and the 12-0 defeat at half-time did not daunt the crowds spirit. During half-time the winners of the floats were announced. The Sophomores took first place and the Freshman took second. Then Cheryl Stephens, Jackie Highlands, Kim Spahr, Mycala Masemer, Denise Griest, Lisa Wi- nand and Doris Ensor were announced as the nomi- nees for Homecoming queen. Finally Kim Spahr was crowned to reign as 1976 Homecoming Queen with Denise Griest 1st runner- up, and Cheryl Stephens 2nd runner-up as her court. Our Eagles never did manage to catch up with the Blue-devils with an ending score of 24-18, but we were proud of them for trying their best to defeat them. 1976 Homecoming activities were brought to an end after the Annual Homecoming dance featuring the group, Back Door Frost , which was held at the school gymnasium. Overall, Homecoming 1976 was a completely en- joyable event thanks to everyone who had made it worthwhile. 67 2nd runner-up Cheryl Stephens, 1976 Homecoming Queen Kim Spahr, 1st runner-up Denise Griest Denise Griest and her escort Dan Kofalt Cheryl Stephens and her escort Kevin Searfoss 1st place Sophmore Class Float 1975 Queen Cindy Kofalt and her escort Randy Griest 68 Lisa Winand and her escort Brad Pauli Kim Spahr and her escort Jim Aiello 2nd place Freshman Class Float Dee Ensor and her escort Rodney Thomas Jackie Highlands and her escort Dale Rutters 69 Amanda Hoffacker JV Cheerleaders; Sonya Wolf, Denise Kemper, Lisa Speese, Deb Becker, Doris Ensor, Amanda Hoffacker 70 Diane Carson Varsity Cheerleaders; Kim Spahr, Karen Stimer, Denise Tribby, Tracy Snyder, Kim Highlands, Jackie Highlands, Pam Thomas CHEERLEADERS Either under the lights or during the day the cheerleaders show their spirit for the great effort our players put forth. FOOTBALL Football is a sport of running, blocking, and tackling for the purpose of scoring a touchdown. The players at Bermudian, throughout this season, have shown stamina, spirit, and deter- mination. They started practice in the heat of August, right up until November in the cold, to secure a place in the Blue Mountain League. Our 1976 squad, comprised mostly of under- classmen, displayed spirit, team work and a desire to win. These qualities kept the girls to- gether even when facing their tou iest adversaries. Faced with the loss of sev- eral excellent runners, each member of the team made a fine effort to maintain the momentum of the team. Throughout this year the Eagle harriers dis- played determination and enthusiasm in the face of a highly competitive schedule. Finishing the season with a 2 -12 record, the team should be commended on their efforts. 83 FALL ALL SCHOOL PLAY The 1976 fall play was presented to the public on the evenings of November 19 and 20. The play, enti- tled Rest Assured” was a three-act comedy directed by Ms. Bev Eby. The main character was Mr. Morlock who would not give up his daughter to marry a young man be- cause of his poverty. Mr. Morlock is rude and mean to everyone only to wake up and find that all his trou- bles were only a dream. His character changed to a wonderful loving man toward his family and friends. The people deserving credit for the successful play are Kathy Wadel, a sophmore. Student Assist- ant Director, and the cast consisted of Kevin Sear- foss, Dan Sebright, Agnes St. Clair, Mark McLane, Robin Heyser, Denise Griest, Kathy Wadel, Dave Luther, Dave Eichelberger and Richard Foutz. The Stage Manager was Dan Hoover, Prompter was Laura Friedman and Rob Hershey, a 1976 graduate of Ber- mudian Springs, served as Technical Assistant. The hard work and effort that was put into the play was found worth while by both the audience and actors. We hope that the future plays of our school are just as impressive as this one was. Dressed in summer-time shorts and tops, they provide suspenseful excitement and entertainment for a loyal student body. Even with freezing teamperatures outside, wrestlers inside maintain their growling greetings, reddened faces, heavy breathing and perspir- ing bodies. One lucky girl's pride is warmed when selected queen at the annual Holiday Wrestling Tournament. A post-holiday event, the Miss Yearbook Dance is another opportun- ity for one girl to win recognition in the eyes of the student body. Guys and girls shed their heavy coats and boots and don swirling gowns and trim suits to dance to a lively band. Due to severe winter conditions in 1977, the Yearbook gala ball had to be cancelled. Even though there were sub- zero temperatures outside, inside Bermudian Springs six hot and nervous girls awaited the decision. On January 14, 1977, the candidates were announced on the auditorium stage by Diane Billett, the 1977 Eagle editor. Doris Ensor, Denise Griest, Steph Hertz, Jackie Highlands, Laura Lichtenfeltz, and Mycala Masemer were grateful for their escort's arms as Diane began to speak, Second runner-up is Doris Ensor, first runner-up is Mycala Masemer, and the 1977 Miss Yearbook Queen is Denise Griest,. Chess, a mentally demanding and exhaustive acti- vity, matches one individual against another in a battle of various strategies and tactics. This season the Eagles, under the advisory of Vince Kowalski, hope to improve on last year’s 6-1-1 record which was good enough to qualify for the divisional play- offs and, in addition, it assured a high finish in the National High School Championship held in Cleve- land. A round robin tournament is used to select the five best players with the person having the best score playing first board, second-best score playing second board, etc. With several players returning from last year's team, Bermudian will be in strong contention for league honors this year. CHESS TEAM 104 MIDDLE SCHOOL November 15, 1976 was ground-breaking day for the new middle school. This day marked the beginning of construction of the long sought-after and much-needed middle school. Relieving crowded-conditions, the middle school will be a two-story building which will be located behind the football field. The building will be used for the education of grades five through eight. According to the plans, the new middle school will include 14 regular class- rooms, two science rooms, a music, an art, special education, home economics, industrial arts rooms, as well as a library, cafeteria, and gymnasium. Five new tennis courts will also be added. The new school will open sometime in the 1977-78 school year and the faculty will be re- cruited from teachers from both the high school and elementary schools. It is hoped the middle school will greatly reduce the over-crowding and enhance the educa- tion for our rapidly expanding communities. 105 A normally rambunctious young man sits very still, eyes im- mobile, and lips pursed concentrating on a rescue for his King. Future Mr. Americas grunt with reddened, perspiring faces con- torted by clenched teeth. Dozens of boys, feet dragging, arms limp, complain of backaches caused by climbing trees to collect fruit to make apple cider. No, these are not tests for an endurance race but just our every other Thursday club activities. The multitude of clubs and organizations at Bermudian Springs provides for the social, aca- demic, civic, and physical needs of our students. They have be- come outlets for our energies and opportunities for development of our talents. FLUTES ROW 1. J. Behney, T. Lobaugh, C. Trimmer, S. Zinn, ROW 2. V. Bailey, S. Anderson, L. Reese, T. No, it is only the Senior Chorus starting their September practices for their upcoming Christmas concert. Mr. Mat- thew C. Rosendahl strives for perfection and believes practice is the key. Their long hours of practice and hard work is also quite apparent by the success of their Spring concert and various Exchange concerts. Being a member of chorus has its disadvantages but also its rewards. The rewards include indi- vidual accomplishment, pride of belonging, and support of fellow students. BASSES ROW 1. C. Huish, R. I have learned that with a mutual respect and un- derstanding among the students, faculty and adminis- tration, we can experience many worthwhile activi- ties and solve many problems. I hope we will be remembered for our accom- plishments, and in the future the Student Council will continue to work as a unifying organization for the betterment of our school. Denise Y. To giggle, to cry, to cheer, to shout We all could not live without. So when all else just seems so wrong Just hold up your head and go along. 1. w. wagener Karen G Kathy Trcka Randy Harris Mark Eisenhart Rodney Thomas Mycala Masemer J Doris Ensor Mark Messi nger Larry Miller Amanda Hoffacker John Cookerly Barry Cox Kerry Yersevich Dan Summers Jeannette Stahler Deb Becker Steve Henry Rose Miller Brad Pauli Lisa Winand Kim Spahr Vickey Riley Carrie Starry Donna Stoerzinger Steph Hertz 4. I want each year of life to show The growth and changing scenes And interest in what is new Might keep your spirit free; To want to find that every view Holds great appeal for thee. I hope that you shall always feel The urge of discontent, That fills the soul with ready zeal For new accomplishment. To want each day to challenge you with some heroic test; And then I hope that you shall do Your very very best. I hope that every morning sun Finds you prepared to go Where unfamiliar pathways run And where strange waters flow. To never want to see the day When you no longer thrill In prospect of the joys that may Lie just beyond the hill. I hope that every person That strives his very best Will always find contentment Beyond his chosen test. With desire, zeal, and courage And lots of luck to him To aim for his desire That will bring peace within. 1. w. wagener Patrons - Through the years we have come to these special people with open hands and pleading eyes. This year, as each year past, they have received us with outstretched arms and willing smiles. The continual patronage of these spe- cial people has served as a pat on Ber- mudian's back. We embrace our patrons with gratitude and wishes of a success- ful year. They will always be remem- bered for their active role in produc- ing this yearbook. 130 FRED M.
